| Tempura Kiku - in the Mitsukoshi Restaurant- Japan, Epcot Center
This is a fairly small tempura bar off the main lobby of the restaurant
in Japan. You sit on low chairs around a counter that surrounds
the station where several chefs prepare a variety of tempura dishes.
For those unfamiliar with it, tempura is small bits of meat, fish,
or vegetables coated in a light batter, and deep fried. It must
be eaten very soon after it is cooked or it quickly becomes cold,
soggy, and generally gross.
This was the best tempura I have ever eaten, including my own.
Since you are sitting practically *in* the kitchen, it is served
as soon as it comes out of the deep fryer.
Prices are reasonable. We went at lunch time, and complete meals
were $7.00 - $11.00. (1987 prices). No reservations accepted, or
required.

Dole Whip, available in Magic Kingdom's Adventure Land, has my
vote. Last year in May I waited in line for 40 minutes to get
this treat. Am I nuts ? Well maybe just a little .....
George
P.S. Churro's (sp?) in Frontier Land came a close second....

24.3 | BEST Meal | DPDMAI::MATTSON | | Mon Feb 27 1989 12:44 | 13 |
| The best meal, we had was at Epcot, in FRANCE. I don't remember
the name of restaurant, but the food was reasonable, and FANTASTIC!!!
We didn't much care for the funny sandwhiches in the Magic Kingdom
park. The french bread, hollowed out, with chicken or tuna salad,
piled inside, and eaten like an ice cream cone. That was about
all we could find there. Was there something else that we missed,
burgers or something?
One good thing, tho, my dad is diabetic, and has to have fruit with
every meal, and we had no problem whatsoever, finding some sort
of fruit or fruit juice, with no sugar, in it for him.

Does the restaurant your referring to have burgundy awnings ?
If so it might be the Chef Le' Paris (?). I agree with you 100%.
It was the best meal I had in Epcot too.

| In regards to .2, Dole Whip is great!! I love that stuff.
Also the Churros are really different. It's almost like a cinnamon
bread stick with a kick.
In EPCOT I loved Alfredo's. I got the Futtuchini Alfredo of
course and it was great.
The Monte Cristo sandwichs in the Magic Kingdom are also very
good.

24.6 | BEST restaurant | KNEE::SEAGLE | Disney-aphile | Mon Feb 27 1989 19:18 | 15 |
| I enjoyed "The Bistro" in EPCOT's France pavilion. Very classy
atmosphere, towel over the arms of the waiters, the whole 9 yards.
Best of all, because of where it is and its clientele, you do not
have to put on "airs" or pretenses (we went in our shorts, Nikes,
and polo shirts...along with most everyone else there). The service
was amazing (if you put your fork down, you BETTER mean that you
are finished!).
Net price? I find that interesting. There were 5 of us who tried
France, Germany, and Italy during 3 days there and our bill always
divided out to $20 per person including gratuity! Those were
major-league meals, too, literally from soup to nuts. Of course,
it has been 3 years since I last visited EPCOT (I'm soooo ashamed).

24.7 | WORST Attraction/Ride | KNEE::SEAGLE | Disney-aphile | Mon Feb 27 1989 19:28 | 25 |
| (this applies to Disneyland as well, IMHO)
Unquestionably..."It's a Small World" (hereafter, IASM).
LET ME EXPLAIN!!! (I can just hear the screams of disbelief!)
If memory serves me, IASM was originally done as a World's Fair
attraction by the Disney company for Bank of America. It was barely
cute 20-30 years ago, but now (in the age of AudioAnamatronics)
it is pathetic. Furthermore, after you wait an average of 20 minutes
to get on the ride it is a major disappointment.
Finally, a personal anecdote. My feelings of hostility for this
attraction were cemented when IASM experienced temporary "technical
difficulties" one day in July when we were visiting Disneyland with
some relatives. We waited for at least 30 minutes in the baking
sun to get on this turkey. In the China room the ride had some
sort of problem and "stalled out" for 10 minutes. Ten minutes of
wooden figures screeching the lyrics to the song in CHINESE into
your ears is enough to make you batty. I have only ridden IASM
once since then (against my better judgment) under extreme peer
pressure.
FWIW,
David.

24.8 | BEST Attraction/Ride | KNEE::SEAGLE | Disney-aphile | Mon Feb 27 1989 19:37 | 20 |
| I guess I need to give my opinions of the "best" now that I've trashed
"It's a Small World"...
Best Attraction, Magic Kingdom: The Haunted Mansion.
I *know* that this ride utilizes circa 1968 technology to do
it's thing, but I still am amazed. To think that no lasers,
holograms, or other "hi-tech" devices are employed and yet it
looks that good wipes me out. Also, the first time I rode this
one at Disneyland I was only 8 years old and the fact that it
did not scare the life out of me, but made me think twice
about the subject due to the "realism" left quite an impression.
Best Attraction, EPCOT: Universe of Energy.
What a concept! Also, I really enjoy the "smell-o-rama" (or
whatever they call it) which beautifully complements the
AudioAnamatronics. Then, as icing on the cake, the ride is
re-charged by solar collectors on the roof?! UNBELIEVABLE!
David.

| here are my picks for WDW, (gee did I miss something? ;^))
see previous note for overall award.
BEST Meal/Money No Object - By far was France 'Les Chefs de France'
The Dinner For 2 which included Salmon
Pate for around $50 plus, I believe the
entree was prime rib?
BEST Meal/Value - Toss up between Japan's Teppanyaki
Dining Rooms for their Steak/Fish
dinners, Germany's Beirgaten Smoked Pork
Loin dinner for 2 and Canada 'Le Celier'
for the Tourtiere and Maple Syrup Pie.
(as you can see I enjoyed eating in WDW)
MOST OVERRATED Dinner Show - I guess the Polynesean revue, saw better
ones in Hawaii.
BEST Dinner Show - By far is the Hoop-Dee-Doo, oh! that
strawberry shortcake....
Best Breakfast Value WDW - The breakfast buffets at any of the
Resort hotels.
Best Character Breakfast - Melvin the Moose Show FW.
MOST UNDERRATED Snack Food at WDW - My favorites are the Monte Cristos
batter-dipped deep fried turkey, ham and
Swiss cheese sandwiches at the Town
Square Cafe on Main Street MK.
WORST Hotel Outside the Park - Caravan Motor Inn off I-Drive, next to
the Sheraton Circular Towers, just
because it catered to the Bus-Load crowd
and the partying to the wee hours of the
night. Otherwise for $30/night back in
'82 AAA discount it really wasn't that
bad.
BEST Attraction/ride overall - has to be American Adventure in Epcot, I
feel so damn patriotic after watching it
BEST Attraction - toss up between Pirates of the
Carribean, Hanted Mansion, Spaceship
Earth and The World of Motion
BEST Thrill Ride - Today it's Thunder Mountain, sure to be
surpassed by Star Tours and The Wonders
of Life Body Wars.
BEST Movie Overal - What Else but 'Captain EO'
BEST Circle-Vison Movie - 'O Canada' what can I say, mom was from
Sherbrook Quebec. I also enjoyed China
WORST Attraction - It's a Small World, OK the first time,
by the wife and kid always go again and
seem to sing that damn song the rest of
the day.
BEST Beach - By far the Polynesean, to the left of
Luau Cove, I assume the Grand Floridian
will be just as good from what I saw in
'87. peaceful and quite
BEST Pool - Disney Inn, nice and quite. Also the
one at Vacation Villa's.
Worst Pool - Polynesean and Contemporary, although
the Polynesean pool is nice, lot's of
tourist walking around both places.

24.11 | WORST attraction/ride | TLE::KARAM | | Tue Feb 28 1989 12:30 | 13 |
|
My choice of the WORST ride in the Magic Kingdom has to be the Grand Prix
Raceway. This appears to be one ride which is comparable to those contained in
most amusement parks. I have encountered long lines here and when you do get in
a car, you are always bumper to bumper.
In EPCOT, I would have to say that I was somewhat disappointed by the Livings
Seas. I don't have any particular gripes, but came away from it a tad
disappointed. Maybe because there was not an abundance of fish in the tank?
When we go in November, I'm sure we will go to it again and possibly be more
pleased.

24.12 | BEST attraction/ride | TLE::KARAM | | Tue Feb 28 1989 12:31 | 12 |
| I like the majority of the rides/attractions, but my favorites are:
Magic Kingdom - Pirates of the Caribbean - I am always amazed at the
detail/care taken on the pirates, townspeople, and even the animals.
Each time through it I notice some detail that I hadn't seen before.
EPCOT - the American Adventure Show is my top attraction. This is one
attraction which the rest of my family has no choice about seeing, I demand
that we see it! Besides having great Audio-Animatronics, the patriotic
theme lifts me up.

24.13 | BEST Attraction While Waiting for an Attraction | INDMKT::GOLDBERG | Len Goldberg | Tue Feb 28 1989 13:50 | 13 |
| My nomination for the best attraction while waiting for an attraction
is the slide show outside Captain EO in Journey Into Imagination.
It is a fairly simple, (by Disney standards), multi-projector slide
show put on by Kodak with lots and lots of snapshots. The images span
several generations, some are funny, some sentimental with kids and
puppies, and some are funny just because of their juxtaposition with
other images. The whole thing is accompanied by a typically catchy
Disney tune.
I enjoyed this show even more than I liked Captain EO itself. I
just can't stand Michael Jackson. Having him dance in my lap doesn't
make me like him any better.
|
24.14 | My Nominations.... | MPGS::PELTIER | | Tue Feb 28 1989 14:37 | 26 |
| My nominations are based on my May, 1988 trip...
Best Restaurant: The restaurant in France (upstairs). I think it is
called the Bistro. The food was delicious (chocolate
tourte for desert), the service superb. I don't know about
the price. We were part of a studio audience that day for
a Los Angles tv show (similar to Evening Magazine) and we
had lunch with the cast and crew.
Best Attraction: I *love* the Pirates of the Carribean in Magic
Kingdom and the Spaceship Earth in Epcot. During our trip
in 1988, we went on both of these attractions twice. There
is so much detail that you always see something new each
time.
Most Underrated attraction: I really enjoyed the Carousel of Progress.
This seems to be an old attraction, but I liked the way the
round theater rotated to each new seen. Also, I think that
all of the circle visions are underrated. I especially
loved the circle vision in China.
Reading this notes file makes we want to go back soon (like next
week !!)

24.15 | WORST attraction | DEC25::STANLEY | Marilyn I. Stanley | Tue Feb 28 1989 22:47 | 13 |
| My vote for WORST attraction is Mission to Mars. Since Star Tours
has opened at Disneyland, it seems really outdated.
I'm anxiously awaiting to hear if Tomorrowland is going to be closed
down so that it can be updated. I seem to remember hearing that
George Lucas was working on several projects for Disney.
My vote for second WORST attraction is the Enchanted Tiki Room.
I remember the first time I went to WDW, I really loved this.
That may have been because it was one of the first attractions
that I saw. I was really amazed with the audio-animatronics.
My last visit I just couldn't go to it. I'd already seen it once
that year at Disneyland and figured that once a year was enough.

Best Restaurant(s): Empress Room aboard the Empress Lilly
Riverboat @Disney Village, and Victoria & Albert's in
the Grand Floridian Resort Hotel. Others worth mentioning;
Alfredo's in Italy, The Coral Reef in the Living Seas, Le
Cellier in Canada, and any of the French Restaurants in
France. The Lake Buena Vista Club Restaurant is also very
good. As you can tell, this is one of my favorite pastimes
when my wife and I go to WDW.
Best Attractions: (in my opinion) - The Haunted Mansion (love
the special effects), Big Thunder Mountain (at night), Pirates
of the Caribbean, just walking around and thru Cinderella
Castle.
EPCOT Center: The American Adventure and the Liberty singers,
Captain EO, the movies in Canada, France (Love the music!),
Universe of Energy, Spaceship Earth, Sitting in a holding
pattern on the Monorail overlooking World Showcase at
night (Breadthtaking!).
Best Snack food: DOLE Whip in Adventureland!
Best Breakfast treats: The Shrimp omelette at the Coral Isle Cafe
on the 2nd floor of the Polynesian Resort Hotel, or the TONGA
(Sourdough bread stuffed with bananas and covered with cinammom,
then cooked like French Toast...Wow!!!), or the breakfast buffet
at the Top of the World Restaurant on the 15th floor of the
Contemporary Hotel.
Best Bakery: Le Patissiere in France - EPCOT World Showcase. A great
place to go to get out of the afternoon sun, and have a special
treat and some relaxation.
I could go on and on. Just think, I haven't even seen MGM Studio
Tour, Pleasure Island, Typhoon Lagoon, ...oh god...I want to go
back so bad....

I'm an iced tea fan anyway, and get real upset that you can't get

In WDW, every resturant, fast food place, and snack stand, has a

wedge of lemon and your ready to survive the Florida heat for at least
another hour.

| re: .17 Character Breakfasts
Last October we attended a character breakfast aboard the Empress
Lilly, in the "Fish" room, which is upstairs in the bow of the"ship".
We were served scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, fruit, juice,
coffee, tea, milk, and danish. It was served by waitresses, but
you could get another plate of breakfast if you wished.
Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and Pluto were there, one at a time
and were very accomodating for photos. They didn't spend a whole
lot of time there, but time enough to get the pictures you wanted.
They don't all come in the room at the same time, and there were
never more than two in the room at once (one coming and one going).
So don't get the idea they sit and stay through the whole meal.
One thing that happened while we were waiting in line to go "aboard"
the EL for the CB was that Mickey went strolling past the crowd,
unescorted, and walked happily along the boardwalk and into the
boat. It really felt like the little guy was "real"...it was the
only time we saw a character by himself, not escorted by security
people...it was neat B^)
After the CB on the EL make sure to visit the WDW Shopping Village.
Lots of neat stuff and fun things going on there.

The American Adventure stirs up loads of patriotic feelings.

Karen,
Tis a sad day when those who wander the Magic Kingdom,
unknowingly ommit such a tasty treat. The best way I can
describe it is that it's kind of sherbert-ish. All I can
remember is that it's made from fresh pinapples. There
could have been other flavors but a don't remember. They
serve it in a plastic cup like soft-serve ice cream
garnished with a wedge of fresh pinapple.

For you oldtime WDW travelers who like to stay on/off I-Drive, while
looking over the lates AAA tour book, I see that the Caravan Motor inn,
has been bought and renovated by Day's Inn, and is now called Days Inn
East of Universal Studios, and the old Sheraton Twin towers I eluded

FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY
Gimme a break... The pictures won't come out anyway, and you're giving
me and everyone else a headache. I think that WDW should make the
message longer and stronger and emphasize that the flash doesn't bother
the audio-animatronic figures, but it bothers the hell out of the rest
of the people in the audience.
I think in the last two years "point and shoot" type cameras with
built-in electronic flashes are becoming more and more common and this
is the culprit. Am I being a bit sensitive?
DARKNESS, CROWDS, AND RUNNING
I had to be extra careful in WDW at night. Running through heavy
crowds in darkness seems to be all too common for the 12-21 age group.
I didn't have an accident or even a near one, but I don't think a
simple "I'm sorry" would do if some fool hurt my kids because he
couldn't stop in time.

*Really!* The last time I visited WDW I resisted the urge to
keep from choking a few weenies who insisted on taking flash pictures
inside about 4 rides (I was unfortunate enough to get onto rides
like "Mission to Mars" and these dweebs would be there...it was
almost like they were following me). I think it is a shame that
the Cast Members will not or cannot push the issue.
Your bit about fully-auto cameras being responsible is right on
the mark...most of these bone-heads do not realize the flash has
even gone off! What is worse is that after they do it and get several
prompt and intense scowls from myself and others, THEY DO IT AGAIN
later on!
> DARKNESS, CROWDS, AND RUNNING
You forgot to mention "PUSHING AND TAKING CUTS IN LINE" which seems
to be becoming more prevalent, second only to "TALKING DURING THE

Yes, 100% agreement. I really wanted to bash a lot of folks right
over the head about this. How can you hear a rule, and then completely
ignore it? I wonder what way the cast members could really enforce
this rule without coming off like tyrants?

Me and my wife were in line for Thunder Railroad when these two

them. Along comes the parents way back in line, yelling "Could we
go ride on with our kids?"
Nice guys us, we frustratingly say "ok." So we'll wait in the
same stall for the next run. Now the cast member comes over,
a little bit peeved, and says we *can't* wait for our preference
of cars, but should have walked into the next available stall.
Ugh. Now we look like the bad guys, with no time to explain all
this to the ride attendant. So much for being nice. These parents
probably use this scam all day long. Where do we get rude kid from?
Idiot parents.

24.41 | Just love those *quiet* monorail rides | HBO::MADDEN | Keep your face to the sunshine | Mon Apr 03 1989 08:39 | 36 |
| To add another funny (?) story to the collection.... This one
takes place on the monorail. Picture it:
My husband and I and my folks (with whom we were vacationing) were
riding the early monorail over to Epcot. My folks were talking with
a woman beside them about her all-inclusive package (we're always
looking for the best way to plan our next Disney World vacation...).
Anyway, a few rows back in the monorail, there's some sort of a
*discussion* going on between a mother and her little boy (probably
about 4 years old). This mother is holding her daughter (less than
a year?) in her lap and just hollering at this little boy. No mat-
ter what he says or does, she's hollering at him: "Stop asking
questions," "Sit there and be good," "Didn't I tell you to stop
talking?" "Do we have to take you back home now?", etc., etc.
So this woman beside my mom yells back to her to keep her problems
to herself, that no one on this monorail is interested in hearing
about her inability to keep control. Well, everyone on the mono-
rail is now looking at these two women wondering what's going to
break out next. The woman with the kids tells the woman next to us
to keep quiet and not to worry about it. The other one (next to us)
is telling the mother that she didn't spend $2,000.00 and travel
thousands of miles to sit on a monorail and listen to parents yell
at their kids.
I must say that that did shut the mother up, and I think that the
sympathies ran with the woman next to us, because the little boy
really hadn't been doing anything wrong. My husband and I had seen
him asking his mother and father questions about what they were go-
ing to see. It was really the mother who started the whole scene.
And besides, the woman beside us was right - none of us was enjoy-
ing listening to this mother scream at her kids at 8:30 in the a.m.
Anyway, it was a l-o-n-g ride over to Epcot. We kept waiting for a
fight to break out or something.

Well, what can one say about WDW. It is the crown jewel in the central
Florida vacation paradise and has no equal, in our opinion, on earth
for overall fun times. My wife and I are new to this conference,
having discovered it only this week. But we are veterans of WDW. I
think we are over twenty five "disney days" (DDs) by now. (it's a better
method of describing how often you have been then "oh, two vacations'
worth..."). We have been four of the last six years for vacations, my
parents having a house near Daytona (they come North for summers!). And
then we had been before we met, me maybe another dozen DDs.
We just read through the replies of this note and found ourselves
saying "What! is he crazy" or "Right on brother!". I guess we all have
very different tastes. I think we have been in everything and done
everything at least once. I generally feel that the people who don't
act in the proper spirit of WDW or are just plain rude is the worst
thing there. We try to suspend belief a bit and be kids again. We try
to ignore the occasional paint peel or cigarette butt and "let go". And
it seems that some folks have to bring the problems of their regular
lives there. A shame.
I think it very hard to pick a "best". We just love BEING THERE. After
all the times at WDW, I still occasionally turn to my wife and say
"it's just amazing, isn't it... cut out of the Florida swamps...". The
best thing? The "feel good" feeling you get when you're there...
But in the spirit of things, (thx to Claude for the template) our votes:
BEST Meal/Money No Object - By far was France 'Les Chefs de France'
and the Bistro de Paris upstairs. The veal was
wonderful.
BEST Meal/Value - Japan in EPCOT and Crystal Palace in MK.
Although the Canada restaurant is excellent for the
money.
MOST OVERRATED Dinner Show - The Polynesean revue. No contest.
BEST Dinner Show - The Hoop-Dee-Doo, but the Diamond
horseshoe is good too and a better value.
Best Breakfast Value WDW - The breakfast buffets at any of the
WDW hotels.
Best Breakfast atmosphere - The Land Grill, we love it. About
$16/couple.
Best Character Breakfast - Empress Lilly.
MOST UNDERRATED Snack Food at WDW - My favorites are the Monte Cristos
batter-dipped deep fried turkey, ham and Swiss cheese sandwiches at
the Town Square Cafe on Main Street MK.
WORST Hotel Outside the Park - Can't say, we like our comforts.
BEST Hotel Outside the Park - The Marriott World Center, no contest.
It's as good as any on the WDW grounds and cheaper. If you can do without
the ambience of looking out at the lagoon at the MK or having the
monorail at your door, it's totally RAD folks. I did a DEC convention
there for a week and we stayed an extra few days. Best pool in Florida
that I have seen. Great Japanese restaurant (there are 6), just very nice
and 50-100$/night less than the best WDW rooms.
BEST Attraction/ride overall - has to be American Adventure in Epcot, I
agree with those that mention the patriotic theme. I get a tear in my
eye everytime. It represents the best America has to offer. A must see.
Your first time will be special.
BEST Attraction, MK - toss up between Pirates of the
Carribean, Hanted Mansion
BEST Attraction, EPCOT - I like Living Seas. You see folks, you
have to enjoy watching fish. I do. Otherwise, it would be dull. I never
miss it. Motion and Energy are wife favorites. Spaceship E is good.
BEST Thrill Ride - Thunder mountain is tops. But Star
Tours??? Can't wait.
BEST Movie Overal - What Else but 'Captain EO'
BEST Circle-Vison Movie - Canada and China.
WORST Attraction, MK - The space trip in TL, just God awful. I
have just about run out of patience with Small World, but the wife and
daughter drag me in every time....
WORST Attraction, EPCOT - Mexico ride. The pits.
BEST Beach - Grand Floridian.
BEST Pool - Disney Inn, nice and quite. Also the
one at Vacation Villa's.
Worst Pool - Polynesean.
BEST weeks to go to WDW - last of April, first of May, first 2
weeks of October are our favorites.
WORST weeks to go to WDW - Christmas, July 4th, Easter (God awful)

24.49 | Laserphonics | PROSE::CLOUTIER | You're soaking in it. | Thu Jun 22 1989 15:06 | 28 |
|
I've read all 48 replies and there wasn't one mention of what I
believe to be one of the most exciting events of a WDW experience --
Laserphonic Fantasy (or what they now call Illuminations).
Our family (wife, 8 yr. old daughter, me) went to WDW for the
first time in July of 1987. We had the pleasure of being in
Epcot for the 4th of July and witnessed the laser, fireworks,
fountain, and music extravaganza around the World Showcase. To say
it was exciting is an understatement of mammoth proportions. My
daughter, who was sitting on my shoulders at the time, experienced
such overwhelming sensory overload that she shook for the entire
35 minutes or so (apparently the show was extended another 10
minutes for the holiday). My wife, generally known to be
unimpressed with most anything, didn't stop talking about it
until 2 weeks after we returned home from Florida.
As a side comment, I have to agree with Jim (previous reply)
about The Living Seas. I, too, enjoy watching fish and I
thoroughly enjoyed UT's pavilion. If you're into being
entertained by whiz-bang special effects and you can't
appreciate the tranquility of watching what takes place
in what I think is a well-designed aquarium, perhaps Living
Seas is not for you. But we found a nice change from the
otherwise hurried atmosphere of most of the other Future
World attractions.

24.50 | Here is the vote from the UK. | WOTVAX::BATTY | So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish! | Wed Jul 19 1989 08:58 | 75 |
| I vote for Big Thunder Mountain as best ride, especially after dark.
We tried Space Mountain, which was good, but the anticipation when
you can see a tight turn coming up gave me more thrill than just
being jolted and bumped in pitch darkness, so BTMR has the edge.
Strangely enough I saw more detail on BTMR after dark (Falling rocks,
hovering bats and walls coming in to crush you) than I did during
the day.
Dole Whip as best snack. We got ours in Adventureland, it was very
refreshing, and gave everyone a lift to carry on without a long
break. It also showed how competitively everyone viewed selection
of lines and queues. The till for our line locked up and the guy
couldn't clear it, but when he suggested that we either join the
other line, or wait for his supervisor with the master key, I thought
the crowd was going to drag him over the counter and lynch him.
Worst aspect - Behavior of visitors. I've sounded off at length
about the power play of Brazilian Tour Groups in another note, so
I will let that lie, but flash photography was bad, and so was line
jumping. If you've seen the Country Bear Jamboree, you will remeber
the bit about the Bear who takes a flash photo, and then this
disembodied voice says "No Flash Photography, and this means YOU
too". The message couldn't be plainer, but seems to promote an absolute
fireworks display of flashes.
There were also a few 'professional' line jumpers working the MK.
They were very rare, but the ones we spotted were so bad they were
good, if that makes sense. They provided great pre show entertainment,
when a wait was inevitable, and you just had to settle down and
'Watch the People'. A typical one was at one of the Stage Shows
in front of the Castle. We were at the back of the pack, which was
about 20 people deep, when this guy with his son about 5-6 years
old came up beside us. He started working diagonally through by
muttering "He needs a bathroom" until he was halfway in, then changed
to "Excuse me, We need to get back to our family" then near the
front he picked a sociable looking group and seemed to ask if his
son could slip in front of them so that he could see. Objective
achieved, but at what cost to the son's moral outlook, lieing, cheating
and conning gets you to the front of the pack! It was so obvious
that everyone near us knew what he was doing, but we all just let
him go, and almost gave him a cheer when he got to the front. As
I said, it was so rare that it wasn't worth bothering with, but
when you did spot one it was very entertaining.
Best Dinner Show for us was the Hoop De Doo. So corny, but so full
of energy. I'm not in the least biased by my daughter being picked
to dance on stage, or me being picked for a spotlighted "Toot Toot"
(If you want to know what that means, go see the show, I'm giving
nothing away!). Food and drink good and plentiful, my jug of beer
seemed to fill itself up every 5 mins. Disney Magic Again?
Best Character Breakfast, Chip'n'Dale's Country Morning Jamboree.
Like the Hoop-De-Doo, it was corny but full of energy, plenty to
eat and drink, and a room full of people blowing kazoos was a sight
to behold, especially at that hour of the morning!! It was also
the only time we saw D Duck Esq. for autographs, we never saw him
in the open again, only in Shows.
Talking of Characters, Roger Rabbit seemed to have a 'Suprise Guest
Appearance' near the end of every stage show we saw. Looks like
he is being groomed for stardom, although I wonder how he will sign
autographs with those wobbly fingers.
The Polynesian Brunch on Sundays is worth a mention, for the length
of time the characters spent at each table. No need to hunt them
down, they came to each table in turn, and spent as much time as
you wanted for photos, autographs, hugs and cuddles. I am resigned
to not starring in any of my videos, because no-one else in the
group seemed able to drive the camera, but Goofy dragged over one
of the waiters, and in sign language made him video me in a Bear(Dog)
Hug with him.
Everything in WDW was special, but the ones I have chosen had just
that little bit extra for us.

| Now my votes for the best and worst:
Best Restaurant: The Land Grille Room
It had wonderful food at reasonable prices. I also liked the revolving
floor. Granted, I felt like a fool eating in front of all those
hungry(staring) people as we faced the lobby, But otherwise it was
quite nice. Oh, the cheesecake there is better than I have found
anywhere else.
Worst Restaurant: The San Angel Inn
The atmosphere was romantic, but that was the only good point. The
menus were difficult to read in the dim candle light. Our waiter had an
aurgument with the manager right at our table. The food was not very
good, and it was *too* expensive!
Best Attraction(Magic Kingdom): Space Mountain
This is my all time favorite ride/attraction at any of the amusement
parks I have been to. Maybe I'm a little biased, I happen to think
anything at WDW is better than rides found elsewhere ;^)
Worst Attraction(Magic Kingdom): Mr. Toad's Wild Ride
We waited longer for this ride than anything else, only to be
dissapointed. The ride would have been OK if I had been 6 or so but
I'm not.
Best Attraction(Epcot Center): Horizons
This attraction is really neat! I love the whole thing! We have never
had to wait in line. The special effects are wonderful. I especially
like the ending(you have a choice of three).
Worst Attraction(Epcot Center): Universe of Energy
A snore! It was OK the first time around, but I think once is enough
for this one.
Best Attraction(MGM Studios): Great Movie Ride
This is another of my all-time favorite attractions!
Worst Attraction(MGM Studios): ???????????

24.53 | BEST Snack Food - Kids' Opinion | INDMKT::GOLDBERG | Len, Back From the World | Thu Dec 21 1989 11:55 | 12 |
| My kids' vote for the best snack at WDW is for Mouseketeer Bars.
Personally, I don't see the attraction, but I think they each had one
every day we were there.
For those of you who don't know, they are Mickey Mouse shaped ice cream
novelties on a stick. The ears are chocolate ice cream covered with
chocolate, the eyes, nose, and mouth are also chocolate. The rest of
the face is vanilla.
Mouseketeer Bars are available from ice cream carts in all three theme
parks. These can also be purchased in your local supermarket, (and for
much less than the $1.50 each they charge at WDW.)

| After the banana-stuffed French toast at the Poly, the chocolate-chip
muffins served at Pioneer Hall for the Chip & Dale Country Morning
Jamboree are in my opinion the second best breakfast food in the World.
It is tempting to fill up on these, but save some room for the rest of

Are these muffins available anywhere else in WDW?

they are good aren't they.

That'll be the Liberty Square Tavern, I didn't remeber them having

Since this topic has covered the Monte Cristo Sanwhiches served at WDW,
the following is an excerpt from 183.27 (Ruth Lowells trip report), so
as to not clutter up the Trip report note.
> I just had to try one of the
> famed Monte Cristos so dinner was at Columbia Harbour House.
> I thought it was good but it wasn't what I expected. I was
> appalled at seeing a deep fried sandwich with powdered sugar
> on it - with honey to dip it in at that! The Monte Cristos
> I've had were dipped in egg and fried, sort of like French
> toast.
Do they have different versions of the Monte Cristo's at WDW?
Well I never had the Monte Cristo's at the Columbia Harbour House,
always had the ones they serve at the Town Square Cafe, which (up until
'87 anyways) were indeed dipped in a egg based batter and fried and
served with a fruit cup and a Rasberry type of sauce (for details see
the recipe I posted in 42.3).

24.72 | Best and Worst | WAGON::KRUEGER | | Thu Jan 16 1992 14:54 | 48 |
| I just stumbled over this note and now I'm (a) starving, and (b)
homesick for the Magic Kingdom!
I've been there 8 times and thought I had all the best bargains down
but I've really learned alot today! For instance, I've never (gasp!)
had a Dole Whip!!! That's going to change on my next trip (April).
The best place to eat and the best bargain was the luncheon buffet put
on by the Polynesian ... that would be our big meal of the day; I think
it was about $10 for adults and $6 or $7 for kids. Besides having a
million things to choose from, there was always a roast lamb or roast
pork or roast beef that was carved by the chef. Then one year it was
discontinued, but we were told that the Contemporary had the same
buffer on their 15th floor. So for a couple of years we had the same
luncheon buffet at the Contemporary, and the price was about the same.
Then last year, after bragging to a friend of mine about this fabulous
buffet, we were told that the Contemporary didn't do that anymore!
This was told to us by a waitress. It was only after we bumped into a
couple in the elevator that we found out that the buffer WAS held at
the Contemporary, same price, but at night in the Pueblo Room! We went
and it was okay (prime rib was the specialty) but I missed all the
choices. The good thing was that the ambrosia was included, which was
my favorite dessert.
YOu really have to ask around and don't depend on the help, either.
Other tourists are always looking for bargains and willing to share
their information with you.
I ate at the French restaurants in Epcot three times, and they have
great meals at lunchtime that can save you about half what you would
pay for at night. We always had our big meals at lunch so that we
could walk them off during the day; at night we had something very
light if anything at all (besides a snack).
Fave snacks for us were the lemonade bars at Epcot. My daughter liked
the strawberry bars, but they didn't have them at the Magic Kingdom for
some strange reason.
Best attractions? Everything other than the Tiki Birds at MK, the
Flight to Mars, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Snow White (mostly the witch),
all at MK. The only bore at Epcot was the ride in Mexico. I loved the
Americana Review and never get enough of it. I love "The Land" at the
Kraft place; it amazes me how things grow and can be grown under
duress. All of the special displays were great; the Living Seas were
okay, but I like the Boston Aquarium better.
Mickey, I miss you!!!

24.73 | My most recent best/worsts | MRKTNG::ITS4U::KUSEKOSKI | Maintain imperturbable equanimity | Tue Mar 24 1992 15:04 | 90 |
| Best drink: The coffee (100% Columbian). My
wife says the decaf was the best
she's ever had!
Most overpriced drink: $2.00 for sparkling water anywhere
at EPCOT! Really guys, I've already
spent a bundle on this vacation --
don't rip me off for a drink!
Best protest over $2 water: A $4 pint at the Rose and Crown Pub
in England at EPCOT. Expensive, but
worth it....
Best restaurants: Either of the restaurants in France
at EPCOT. Fish dishes, duck,
escargot, salad (Bistro), and Creme
Brulee (Bistro) were favorites.
LeNotre Bourgogne Blanc was nice.
Most overrated restaurant: Steerman's Quarters at Empress
Lilly. Too much food, too rich, too
much money. Waiters performed like
Audioanimatronics. Worst value at
WDW.
Best snacks: Gumbo at Dixie Landings resort with
a Dixie Beer. Beignets at Port
Orleans food court midday when they
make them fresh to order. Just as
good as Jackson Square.
Worst snack: Beignets at Port Orleans food court
in the morning when they "refry them
to order" (H-E-A-V-Y!).
Best daytime show: Surprise in the Skies midafternoon
at EPCOT. Only Disney could make
daytime fireworks work. Pilots and
kites are great!
Best nighttime show: Illuminations! Nothing more need be
said.
Most overrated show: SpectraMagic parade. Living proof
that it's possible to make something
too big. This would play well in a
stadium, but I liked the ethereal
feeling of the old Main Street
Electrical Parade better for the MK.
Tackiest distraction: Skywriters for Church Street Station
and the Shamu blimp constantly
flying over WDW. These things
deliberately fly over the daytime
show at EPCOT when everyone eyes
area on the skies! If I were
Disney, I'd sue, but if you're in
Orlando, don't patronize these
places and express your discontent
to their management.
Best 3D movie: Muppets at MGM. The "extracinematic
enhancements" were great!
Best overall atmosphere: Walking out of EPCOT after a late
dinner an hour after park closing.
Quiet and beautiful.
Award for design excess: Dolphin and Swan EPCOT resorts.
Worst new addition: Pleasure Island. Noise and lights
cover miles, dragging the real world
into the Disney Magic. Draws a
crowd, so it's smart marketing, but
the right idea in the wrong place
IMHO.
Worst hotel feature: New "ballistic flush" toilets at
Dixie Landings resort. Sounds like
Typhoon lagoon in your room anytime
anyone in the building uses
bathroom, especially after midnight
and before 5am!
Most infectious disease: The song from "It's a Small World."
We didn't even go on the ride this
time, but just reading about it here
today has it going through my mind
all afternoon! HELP!

The "ballistic flush" is in Port Orleans, too. It didn't bother us too
much, but we were on the top floor. Maybe the lower floors hear more
noises.

24.75 | Most Inconsiderate "Guests" | BROKE::LUND | | Mon May 18 1992 14:14 | 89 |
|
OK; I've got a worst : Inconsiderate Visitors at WDW:
Actually it is almost tied, I really couldn't decide which was
worst... So I decided they are tied....
Inconsiderate Smokers - Now this is just inconsiderate ones.
Kudos to those who are aware of the amount of people around
them and don't wait in line (rejoin their family) until after
smoking; not lighting up where their not supposed to..
It's the ones that light up where they are not supposed to
(I wonder if they are really blind to the NON SMOKING SIGNS or
the cigarette inside a red circle with a slash thru it signs
like the lines waiting for rides (BTMR for instance). Besides it
is probably a fire hazard to be smoking in there; and people are
literally shoulder to shoulder in there. I nearly got burned across
the face with one. Or places like Little Mermaid waiting line,
restrooms, etc. Many of these places are dangerous for smoking to
occur, yet people just light up anyhow. Those of us around these
people are captive audiences for second hand smoke.
Now tied with the Inconsiderate Smokers is the Inconsiderate
Adults with children....
These people really irrate me.. Now thats being mild; and
it's been 6 weeks since I was there... Anyhow... These are the
people that have decided that because they paid to enter WDW
(not like the rest of us haven't) and because they have children
with them they have the right to do what they want. The lessons
they teach the children is unbelievable! The children may be theirs;
their grandchildren, neices, nephews, etc... So I didn't say parents!
Anyhow here's two examples: waiting for spector magic.... A couple
of adults with Children decided they could move WDW benches right
up to the ropw line for them and their children. The poor WDW employee
patroling that area had to tell these people to return the benches;
the adult refused and literally sat on it so the employee couldn't move
the bench. Several additional employees and a supervisor were called
in; the man started arguing with all of them. eventually the employees
removed everything from the bench and moved them back; I think they
were close to throwing the adult (at least) out of the park.
This negatively effects:
- The rest of us who came and picked our place and are waiting
- The employees that must put up with such inconsideration
- The children with the adult, who watch the adult, "it's ok
to break the rules, we are on vacation", arguing with
Mickey's(WDW's) employees, moving furniture etc.
Now if that was not bad enough; how about the inconsiderate adults
with children that promise the children (at 7:45) that the parade
doesn't start till 8; that they can do one more ride and then they
will find a spot. They show up again close to 8:00 (in FrontierLand)
there aren't any spaces... They ignore the employees trying to
control people traffic. Then they place their children in the middle
of the walking isles. "I'm sorry this is the cross walk; you'll have to
go straight across or walk behind the crowds. I'm sorry, you'll
have to move; you cannot stay there. So then they take their children
and place them in front of the ropes in front of someone elses children
who have been waiting for the parade. The crowd control employees
come by and say I am sorry you can't be in front of the ropes you must
be behind and the adult attempts to push their children in front of
the others children; that doesn't work; so now these kids don;t have
a place to see the parade; and they are upset.
Again the people standing around; and the employees are adversely
effected. But I think the children get the worst of it.... Those
children that listened to their parents (patiently or impatiently)
and waited for the parade.... Many use that time to have something
to eat; discuss what they did that day; etc. They should not then
have to lose their front row seats to someone elses kids. Or those
kids themselves.... How would you feel if the adult with you kept
shoveing you into places wehre you weren't supposed to be? I really
felt soprry for those kids...
We all pay roughly the same price to get in; some people don't
think and prepare their time..... and therefore decide that
everyone else around should suffer because they chose to wait for
the last minute; but then expected that their kids should have a front
row seat...
Needless to say it was a real interesting wait for SpectroMagic that
night!

| Unfortunately it's the lack of a "No Smoking" policy that will probably
keep me from going over to PI with the kids this Summer.
I always ask for no smoking in any WDW restaurant....but aren't some of
them all non-smoking?

Even though they allow Smoking at PI, it was never a problem for me at
either Adventures Club or Comedy Wharehouse, and I have eyes that are
sensitive to heavy cigarette smoke and get watery and itchy. It seemed
like there was more smoke in the dance clubs.
So if I were you, I wouldn't let that stop you from enjoying AC or CW.

Gee Annie now that I think of it, these would be near the top of my
list as well.
> Inconsiderate Smokers - Now this is just inconsiderate ones.
I'll agree with you on this one, I ran into those usually in the Parks
or restaurants, where they were lighting up in no smoking areas. With
the exception to the night a Doctor's conferrence was having a private
party at the Adventurers club 'till 9 pm (they were to busy lighting up
and comparing notes on who owned what ie. BMW's, Timeshares etc, that
the rest of the crowd were having a hard time enjoying the going on's
with the cast members), we didn't run into any inconsiderate ones at
Pleasure island. (Maybe that's why we didn't enjoy AC the first night)
> Adults with children....
Well it depends if you mean young or real old children ;^). While
waiting in line for about 10 min., a rather rude Grandmother type
insulted Elaine for taking her place at the rope (next to her
Children/Grandchildren) while she was sitting down at a bench 50' away.
Well excuse me lady by I don't see a RESERVED SIGN in that spot. Boy
did she Tick Elaine and Me off, turn out half of their party was over
at the bench or Gift shop and the rest of the party was suppose to be
saving there seats.
While waiting for Luminations to start, we picked our spot and sat down
at the fence right away (no we sat on the tar not the grass side), and
mearely turned around and continued to sit on the ground while the show
proceeded. The family behind us actually thanked us for allowing their
children standing behind us, and themselves standing behind them a
perfect view.

| Re: .83 I found the recipe for Disney's Monte Cristo sandwiches on the
Internet here it is:
Blue Bayou Monte Cristo Sandwich
Blue Bayou Monte Cristo Sandwich
from The Newsletter for Annual Passholders, Vol. 10, No. 1 (Spring
1995)
A tasty southern specialty that makes an everyday sandwich in to an
occasion. The light egg batter appeals to just about everyone and
gives the
dish a delightfully different accent.
BATTER
1 1/2 Cups - All-purpose flour, sifted
1/4 Teaspoon - Salt
1 Tablespoon - Baking powder
1 1/3 cups - Water
1 - Egg
Sift flour, salt and baking powder together. Add water to beaten egg,
then
add to flour mixture and mix well. Set aside.
SANDWICH
1 Ounce - Sliced white meat of turkey
1 Ounce - Sliced Swiss cheese
1 Ounce - Sliced ham
2 Slices - Egg Bread
Make a sandwich using turkey first, then Swiss cheese, and then ham.
Cut
sandwich into quarters using toothpicks to hold sandwich together. Dip
sandwich in egg batter and fry in 360 degrees canola oil until golden
brown. Remove toothpicks and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve with
raspberry jelly.

| Egg bread does have egg in the batter - it's generally a dense bread,
good for soaking up batters. Challah bread is a good egg bread. --S
