11.1 | EPCOT hint | RECAP::SEAGLE | Disneyland junkie! | Fri Feb 24 1989 14:05 | 37 |
| > The living body pavilion in Future World is slated for opening in '90.
WOW! Sounds like EPCOT has several new pavilions since I last visited. Looks
like I will have to plan another trip there soon!
Now on to the business at hand...
The key to seeing EPCOT and beating most of the lines seems to be starting at
the back of the park and working your way forward.
The entrance to EPCOT is dominated by a 150 foot geosphere (or whatever
Buckmaster Fullerton used to call those things) which is an attraction
detailing the history of human communications (sponsored by, big surprise,
AT&T). As with the submarine rides at Disneyland and DisneyWorld/Magic Kindom,
people see this thing and go ga-ga. They MUST ride it NOW so the line at the
geosphere (a.k.a. "Spaceship Earth") is a million miles long 5 minutes after
the gates open. Resist the urge and press on/past/under this thing and
continue walking toward the lake in the center of the complex. There, board
the (I think it's) blue boat which will take you across the lake to the Italy
pavilion in the World Showcase.
At this point you will be on the far side of the park and most likely be by
yourself! Explore the various "countries" represented in the World Showcase in
a counterclockwise direction. By the time you wind up back at the entrance the
lines will be in much better shape.
There *is* one fly in the ointment with my suggestion: Kodak's "Journey into
Imagination" and/or the Michael Jackson film "Captain EO". Kodak has a
diffraction 3-D film process which is the most amazing thing I've seen on a
movie screen ever (IMHO). My plan means you miss this ride until late in the
day at which time the lines are RIDICULOUSLY long (would you believe 90 minutes
or more?). Of course, the line for this ride is ALWAYS that way, so you
should just "punt" based on how tired you are, etc.
Hope this helps and more later (if encouraged),
David.

| I read somewhere lately that the LIVING BODY in Future World will
actually have EPCOT first real thrill ride, ala STAR TOUR in Disneyland
and sound to be in the MGM Studio tour. Seem you will be put in the
same type on similator that STAR TOUR uses but instead of a ride in
space you will be in a ride inside a human body, tring to stop a
desease with the help of anti-body audio-animatronic robots at the
helm. Sound like Fantasy Voyage and STAR TOUR combined.

| Several years ago signs were up at several locations in the World
Showcase indicating future sites for Africa, Spain, and Israel.
However, I never heard anything about them opening. Norway had
been announced and opened between my last two visits.
I finally stopped by the teacher resource center in Communicore
West and asked. The funding did not come through for these countries.
The staff was great at the center. I chatted them for quite awhile.
If you have any questions about future or past attractions or plans
and feel rushed at Earth Station, try stopping at the center. The
staff was busy and was quite knowledgable about the planning of
EPCOT.

| I am leaving in exactly 30 days, and I can't wait!! I am surprised
by the responses I have been reading about the Living Seas. I was
at WDW in '87 and really enjoyed the Living Seas (I had my 2 nephews
with me at that time). We made reservations early one morning and
ate dinner at the Living Seas, this was outrageous. We sat right
across from the large tank, while eating our dinner, sharks, turtles,
groupers, etc....were swimming right passed our table. The kids
were amazed and so was I. At one point, one of the staff jumped
in from the top of the tank and swam up to the window with a fork
in his hand, and pretended to try to steal our dinner. I thought
the kids were going to die of laughter. I really enjoyed this and
the price was moderate.

| I had also heard (thanks to Disney noters) that the lines at Spaceship
Earth were long. The day we went to Epcot, we headed straight for
Journey Into the Imagination. There were no lines (this was around
9:30-10:00, 3 weeks ago) at either the ride with Figment or for
the Captain EO film (which by the way was a favorite for both me
and my five year old daughter). After we did this, we went into
land and then started the country showcase. That late afternoon
and night, we did future showcase and had very short lines to none
at all.

Walt Disney World
P.O. Box 10,040
Lake Buena Vista, Florida, 32801
Anyway, here's some info about the HEALTH ATTRACTION
scheduled for late 1989 at in EPCOT, Future world.
Information Article dated 1987:
"Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and the Walt Disney World Company
announced plans in July for a new 100,000 sq ft attraction devoted to the
exploration of human life and health to be built in EPCOT center at WALT
DISNEY WORLD Resort in Florida. John J Creedon, president and chief
executive officer of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and Michael D.
Eisner, chairman and chief executive officer of the Walt Disney Company,
outlined plans for the entertaining and educational health attraction to be
called Wonders of Life. The new area is scheduled to open in late 1989 in
Future World at EPCOT CENTER.
""This is an exciting undertaking for the Metropolitan Life Insurance,"" Mr.
Creedon said. ""It's a unique opportunity to continue our tradition of
health education that began in the 19th century. Through Disney's
entertainment magic, our pavilion will continue that tradition into the 21st
century"".
The centerpiece of the attraction will be a 'ride through the body' using
motion-based film simulation. This DISNEY technology, recently introduced at
DISNEYLAND Park in California, creates a vividly realistic experience that
combines anatomical images with the sensation of a high-speed race against
time.
Another attraction highlight is a 200-seat theatre, where a cast of newly
designed cartoon characters will present Cranium Command, a film and
Audio-Animatronics show that takes a humorous look at how the brain
functions as the communications center for the body. In the Fitness
Fairgrounds, guests can visit a fun house of thee five (5) senses and
participate in interactive computerized exhibitions. The attraction will
include a food center that specializes in nutritious snacks.
This will also be the first time that a traditional DISNEY character will be
assigned to an EPCOT Center attraction. GOOFY will be featured in an
animated exhibit entitled Goofy About Health.
The gold-domed attraction will be situated in an elaborately landscaped area
between Horizons and Universe of Energy in Future World."

11.19 | Recent visit to Epcot | ANT::MORRISON | Bob M. LMO2/P41 296-5357 | Wed Mar 08 1989 22:21 | 27 |
| I was at Epcot 3 days ago. When I came back I read my mail and saw that
this conference had just opened. What a coincidence!
I was there on a Sunday, not during school or college vacation (maybe a few
colleges on vacation) and the crowds were not bad. I recommend that anyone
not locked into school vacations travel to Fla. at a non-vacation time. I also
have had good luck traveling over 6-7 days from mid-week to mid-week. I don't
know why the crowds were so light; the weather was excellent (a little too warm
for me).
Years ago I had heard that they had a computer room where you could look in
thru a big window and see what was going on. On arrival I found out that this
exhibit is called Computer Central and is sponsored by Unisys. It's not what I
expected. You can look thru a window and see real computers working, but to any-
one who looks thru windows at a large computer room every day, as I do, it's
really hokey. It probably would be a big hit with someone who has never seen
a computer room before.
In the World Showcase, I don't think anyone has mentioned China's 360 thea-
ter. I thought it was a little better than Canada's "360"; the resolution was
better and the scenery less familiar. France's 180 theater is excellent too.
Not many people here have seen the Norway pavilion, so I'll comment on it.
I think only Norway and Mexico have rides. Norway's ride/show is called the
Maelstrom. You ride on simulated Viking ships over a course that is partly
belt-guided and partly free-running, with a short backwards stretch. You get
damp, but not wet as you would on a log flume ride, and it's not as scary as
a log flume. You then get off the boat, walk past an indoor simulated village,
and enter a theater where you see a short film. The restaurant is excellent;
they have an all-you-can-eat buffet of Norwegian and American food at lunch
and dinner (less expensive at lunch).

RE: .8
Don't worry...the discount you get on the World Passports with
the MKC is the same tickets as you would use for Magic Kingdom as
for EPCOT Center. You can even get a discount on a One-Day Pass,
if you only wanted to go for one day (Heaven Forbid!), and the dis-
count tickets can be purchased at the Transportation and Ticket
Center (Magic Kingdom) and EPCOT Center's ticket booths by just
showing the MKC card. As mentioned by others, the passports needn't
be used consecutively(sp?), use 2 days of the 5-day and then come
back 3(or 5 or 10) years later and use the rest. The way prices
keep going up, it's a better investment than gold.
In 'Disneyese', there is actually no place called 'Walt Disney World'
(except Roy Disney named it this in a token move toward his passed-
away brother, Walt). The whole of the 43 square mile property is
called 'EPCOT'. What people commonly call 'Disneyworld', is known
as the 'Magic Kingdom', (you know, the place with Cinderella's castle)
and what people commonly call 'EPCOT' is known as 'EPCOT Center'(yeah,
the big golf ball place). Terminology is as big at WDW as it is
here at DEC, perhaps, that's where your confusion lies...
Rich
PS: As others have mentioned, REMEMBER: With a One-Day Passport
you are stuck in either the Magic Kingdom or EPCOT Center, which-
ever you choose....With the Three, Four or Five-Day Passports, you
can wander back and forth, to and from both parks on the same day
(just don't forget to have your hand stamped if you plan on returning
to that original park or the other one on that same day).

When I went to WDW in 86', the show on the lake at night was referred
to as the "Laser-phonics". At the conclusion of the show, a collection
of green lasers at the American Adventure would wildly cast their
beams at Spaceship Earth, creating an "image" of our planet onto
its surface in such a way as to make the famous EPCOT globe appear
as the "earth rotating on its axis".
This was quite a marvelous spectacle for the quests as they left
EPOCT during it's closing for the evening.
Question: For those of you there most recently, do they still do
this ?

Yes, they still do it at the end of the Illuminations show, but
the wind has to be just right in order to blow the smoke from the
fireworks out of the way of the beam. Sometimes the smoke would
hang over the World Showcase Lagoon and get inbetween Spaceship
Earth and the American Adventure Pavillion (although, it's an neat
thing to see the globe image appear on the cloud of smoke, but they
usually turn it off when they realize it isn't reaching the full
distance).

Wonders of Life pavilion going in Future World?
According to the unofficial guide, it leads you to beleive it's going
in between Horizons and Universe of Energy (since they describe Future
World in counter clockwise fashion), but while watching the Easter
Parade yesterday on ABC, when they showed airial shots from the blimp,
I could see Horizons and Universe of Energy, but didn't see the gold
dome of Wonders of Life. (I had taped it and ran it through slow

I heard on WBZ yesterday (Thursday) that there was an interesting article in the
Thursday Orlando Sentinel. It said that the Swiss government had agreed to
build a pavillion in the EPCOT Center. This pavillion would have as an
attraction the MATTERHORN ride, the same as what's currently in Disneyland.
That certainly got me excited.
Speaking of EPCOT, the Wonders of Life Pavillion is scheduled to open later this
year. And they are working great guns on the Swan and Dolphin Resorts. There
will be a boat service of some sort from these resorts to both the EPCOT Center
and the MGM Studios, with evidently an alternate entrance to both parks. The 2
resort hotels are (or will be) both situated on a lake that will run between
EPCOT and MGM.
We saw work being done on 2 huge swans (maybe 40 or 50 feet tall) that will be
symbols for the resort. From what we saw, the symbol for the Dolphin Resort
will be a dolphin's tail, rather than a whole dolphin.

The Swan symbols are to be 5 stories tall and the Dolphin 6 stories
tall in addition the number of floors for rooms.

Well, yes..... It's fairly exciting, a little "scary," a bit jumpy,
but it's not a coaster or anything, and you don't need seat belts.
 (2) how "bad" is it compared to, say, Space Mountain?
Will a chicken like me be able to take it,

Oh nothing like Space Mountain - it's a "look at and see" kind of ride
like "Pirates," but with a few fun little surprises. No problem,
hop on, even chickens will love it!
 (3) how similar is it to the ride in Mexico (same

Bigger, more ornate boat, and not a slow, leisurely ride like Mexico.

| Africa was supposed to be one of the original countries in the World
Showcase. They lost funding and they fell by the way side. The
same was true of Spain. Rumors have it that Disney canceled Israel
- afraid of possible terrorist attacks.
As to why the Wonders of life didn't show up on the Parade? Stock
Footage of the park. I can remember being there in 86 just after
the Living Seas opened and seeing pictures just showing grass where
the pavillion actually stood.
I worked at the Land Pavillion at the Land Theaters comprised of
the Harvest Theather ( a 20 minute look at Man's relationship with
the Land) and the Kitchen Kaberet (Thank you folks for coming to
my kitchen, as we sing the priase of good nutrition!). I used to
have a lot of time to kill before the start of the movie Symbosis
at the Harvest Theater. I used to inform the guests about EPCOT
Outreach in Communicore West. They have tons of information that
they are willing to give out dealing with any of the subjects at
EPCOT Center or Disney in general. If you're not sure which way
is west, face Spaceship Earth with the World Showcase behind you
you will be facing north so your left would be west and your right
would be east. Just like looking up Main Street USA towards
Cinderella's Castle is north too!
Just about every pavilion has some sort of inside joke or story
to it. As I get more time I'll write about them. Also, the screen
at France is 220 degrees, not 180.
Lastly, another meaning for EPCOT - Every Parent Comes Out Tired.

| We had lunch at the Land Grille. Food and Service were excellent.
We reserved the night before at about 21:30 by phone, but people
who arrived on-spec were only waiting 10-15 mins before their names
were called. The Waiting Area has comfortable seats, and is next
to the Rest Rooms so waiting was no great hardship. The rotating
restaurant didn't impress me, you had to stand up to take in the
detail of the Land scenes, and because you are moving so slowly
through each scene, you got the complete audio show several times.
This was distracting at first, and downright annoying the third
or fourth time through, with disembodied howls, grunts and screeches.
The only benefit of the rotation was that it took you away from
the eyes of the crowd, who sometimes treated you as another attraction.
Treat it as a full service restaurant, with good food and service,
at reasonable prices, and you will be well satisfied. The rotation
may be a bonus, or may be a distraction, but shouldn't be part of
the decision process IMHO.

Mike,
Were you seated along the edge of the restaurant or toward the middle?
I've always been seated along the edge, and had no problem seeing the
scences from the Land boat ride, of course we were always a small group
of 4 or less when going too.

| re: .42
I, too, have been seated on the edge on several occasions and had no
problem seeing the scenes (tops of 'em at least in the case like the
farmhouse). Likewise, usually in a group of four. I also didn't
really listen alot to the tour (don't remember hearing it) but *do*
remember the squaks..guess in that case it's anyones call for either/or
annoying or atmosphere.
What gets me is the timing. Somewhere in the viscinity of 42-45 mins
and I've always in 3+ visits ended within a meter (+/-) of where I've
bugun without ever feeling "rushed" through my meal to meet the proper
timing considerations. Great timing and a nice touch.

| Yes Claude, we were seated on the inside, on the (slightly) higher
level which probably explains it, although some people sitting alongside
us on the outside seemed to need to stand up to get details. I don't
want to detract from the restaurant, it lived up to all your
recommendations, but the rotation wasn't a great selling point for
us.

It's called 'Wonders Of Life', but it's not open yet, the sign at the
entrance said something like fall '89. Outside of the attraction
everything was completed including landscaping and walkway up to the

| Like many others, my family enjoys the preparation for a trip to Disney
World. As part of the preparation, we attempt to determine what
attractions we want to see/ride/do hands-on and which restaurants we
want to try in EPCOT. As a starting point, we began with the following
list of the known attractions and restaurants in EPCOT. I thought that
maybe this list will be helpful to someone else. If I've missed
anything, I'm sure some kind soul will help me out.
Needless to say, we plan on taking in all of the attractions at EPCOT,
along with eating at 5 of the restaurants.

Disney kicks off fall season of vacation
excitement with Wonders of Life premiere
A twisting, plunging thrill ride through the human body sweeps Walt
Disney World visitors into a simulated battle between trauma troops and
infection fighters in "Body Wars," the centerpiece attraction in Epcot
Center's newest pavilion Wonders of Life.
Opening in October, Wonders of Life is a gold-domed marvel of modern
science and technology presented by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. The
pavilion showcases the nerve-tingling "Body Wars" adventure and
features a tableau of life and health that includes a lyrical,
forthright film about the conception and birth of a child.
"Body Wars," a white-knuckle ride through the human body's immune
system in Wonders of Life, combines the sensations of a high-speed race
against time with stunning anatomical images produced through computer
graphics and special-effects film techniques.
To create the adventure, Disney Imagineers collaborated with experts at
Industrial light and Magic, the production division of Lucasfilm Ltd.
that developed "Star Tours." An action-packed thrill ride through outer
space, "Star Tours" is now at Disneyland and coming soon to the
Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park.
Instead of an outer-space battle, the "Body Wars" inner-space conflict
begins with an attack on the epidermis by a giant, germ-carrying
splinter. The visitors' capsule -- actually a 40-passenger flight
simulator -- soon is racing to find the immune-system ammunition need
to fend off the troops of bacteriological invaders.
The ninth major pavilion in Future World, Wonders of Life also
features:
- "Cranium Command," a light-hearted (or light-headed) look inside
the brain of a 12-year-old boy. Guests seated inside a giant head
for the "boy's-eye-view" of life watch an "Audio-Animatronics"
Capt. Cortex direct a cartoon "Body Crew" through a dramatization
of the relationship between the boy's mind and body.
- "It's Our Baby," an emotion-filled motion-picture telling the
story of a young married couple and the development and birth of
their first child.
- "Goofy About Health," starring Walt Disney's most famous "expert"
on the do's and don'ts (mostly don'ts) of health habits.
- "Coaches' Corner," in which three famous professional athletes
give tips for better swings in tennis, golf and baseball.
- "The Anacomical Players," an improvisational theater troupe which
presents short skits with health-related themes.
Much of the festive pavilion is devoted to the Fitness Fairgrounds -- a
collection of participatory exhibits which includes "Coaches' Corner"
and energy-measuring exercisers.
And health food is taste-tempting at "Desserts & Things," the
pavilion's food bar where whole-grain waffles with fresh fruit toppings
are standard fare.
Nestled among soft pines, the domed Wonders of Life pavilion features
an entrance marked by a 75-foot-tall spiraling DNA tower which
accurately depicts the structure of cells which determine human
heredity.

who is earning his stripes, by managing a crew of body parts, inside
a 12 year olds body.

The wonders of life was open last wednesday for cast members only.
They also opened thursday and saturday "soft opening". We got in
on saturday and it was great! Body wars is a ride-like attraction
where you sit in a mini-theater and travel through a person as a
miniturized ship. Super! Cranium command is a move with a/a figure
moving around in front interacting with different screens. Very,
very funny!
A must see!

| I managed to get into the pavillion early since I have my connections
with cast members. The pavillion was actually open to cast memebers
from October 16th on. I had got in on Wednesday, October 18, literally
throught the back door. Body Wars was Great!! It is the exeact same
type of technology that is used in Star Tours. You are in a simulator
and you go jounting through the human body. To back up for a second,
the pavillion is a cross between The Land and The Living Seas. You
walk into an open area that has all sorts of hands on experiences.
They have sections devoted to the senses: touch, sight, hearing. A
live theater area with the Anatomical Players is in the middle of the
building with 2 other theater areas. Another theater area called Goofy
About Health starring , of course, Goofy. The Making Of Me is not
ready yet and won't be for some time. (months) The day that I went in,
Cranium Command was 101 AKA broken.

| The Wonders of Life Pavillion is great. We were down there
the week of the 16th of October, and on Thursday the pavillion was
open for what they call a "soft" open. So, it is not advertised
as open, but it is for people that want to take advantage of it.
There were signs everywhere saying that since this was a test,
using the exhibit was at your own risk.
Body Wars was great!!!!! It is a redo of the old "Vantastic
Voyage" movie in a way. You are supposedly shrunken down and injected
into the body to get a scientist that is all ready in there. Through
the course of the ride, you go through the heart, the lungs, and
the brain. It was really great, very bumpy and probably not for
people that are really squeamish. The film that is playing during
the ride was directed by Leonard Nimoy and stars Tim Matheson and
the girl that was in "Adventures in Babysitting", the original "Karate
Kid", and "Cocktail" to name a few of her films, I forget her name.
Cranium Connection is a tour through the brain of a twelve year
old boy. It also has some well known characters in the film that
goes along with the ride including Hans and Franz from Saturday
Night Live.
The whole Wonders of LIfe Pavillion was great! I liked all
of the hands on stuff that they had, and everything else.

| I made my monthly pilgrimage to DISNEY on saturday (11/4/89).
The Wonders of Life is OPEN.
Since we arrived early (09:00) we were able to walk directly into *BODY
WARS* . There was a host asking if this was our first time through and
if so we were to read the *warning*. Seems BODY WARS is a *turbulent*
*high speed* *thrill* ride with all the disclaimers as to who shouldn't
ride it.
I rode it anyway.
Thought it was *GREAT*. We went back in the afternoon and had to wait
about a hour to ride it the second time. It was still *GREAT*
Crainium Commander was also *GREAT* though we didn't go back the second
time. We will on next visit.
The Making of Me was also showing. I guess I expected more since it
was said it was going to be contorversial. I wanted to see it before
it might be discontinued. Unless I missed something I saw no need for
controversy. If there is there are some real narrow minded people.
All in all it was a *GREAT* way to spend my 23 wedding anniversary.
We did go home early.

11.64 | Another opinion on "Wonders of Life" | DUGGAN::JPARKER | | Tue Nov 07 1989 16:37 | 22 |
| I happened to be at EPCOT 2 weeks ago and went into the Wonders of Life
Pavilion during one of their "soft opening" days. We went straight to
the "Body Wars" ride, and stood in line for 20 - 30 minutes. Read all
kinds of warnings about turbulence along the way. They weren't
kidding. I, for one, did not like this ride. The simulation of the
high speeds of traveling through the body, along with the simulated
turbulence was more than my stomach could take. I couldn't wait to get
out of that one. I would advise that anyone who is susceptible to
motion sickness either avoid this ride, or take your Dramamine ahead of
time. I actually felt so lousy after leaving this ride, I didn't care
to look at the rest of the pavilion. Space mountain was never like
this.
We did look at some of the hands on displays they had in this pavilion.
Reminded me a lot of a cross between the Children's museum in Boston,
and the Science Museum. Lots of things to touch, listen to, and see
(optical illusions).
Next time I go in there, I'll avoid Body Wars, and enjoy the rest of
the Wonders of Life.

I too went on Body Wars during the soft opening. While waiting
to get on the ride I was told by a Disney Cast Member that for
each car of 40 people the average is that 3 people get motion
sick to some degree. I do get motion sick but didn't on this
ride. I have to admit a few time I closed my eyes when my stomch
felt a little funny.
Also as a hint for the ride. When I went on it they has two lines
going - a left and right line. The left line went much faster
then the right.
|
11.67 | | SSDEVO::PHERSON | | Wed Nov 08 1989 15:03 | 5 |
| I too felt a little queezy after Body Wars - enough so that we
didn't go on it again when we had the chance. I wonder if they
could tone down the ride on one of the shuttles for those of us
sensitive people. The longest lines were at the Making of Me,
45 min to 1 hr., so we didn't get the opportunity to see the movie.

| Has anyone who's ridden Star Tours in Disneyland also been on Body Wars
in EPCOT?? I realize that it may be too soon to ask but I thought it
might be interesting if someone in the know could compare the two (with
regard to the queasiness factor). I rode Star Tours a couple of years
ago and didn't feel the least bit queasy. And I was wondering if maybe
Body Wars is a "rougher" ride.

11.73 | Body Wars vs Star Tours | TLE::KARAM | | Mon Nov 20 1989 08:16 | 18 |
| Just got back last night from 12 days in and around WDW.
We, myself, my wife, 12 year old daughter and 10 year old son, went on
Body Wars 5 times. We all thought it was a great ride and really
enjoyed it each time. You do get joustled a bit. I rode on Star Tours
a few years ago and thought that it was a much rougher ride and would
have a more adverse affect on people who tend to get motion sickness.
The waits we encountered for Body Wars ranged from 5 minutes to 40
minutes. Remember, this was supposed to be the offseason.
Cranium Command was great also, I enjoyed it as much as my kids. The
only wait we had for Cranium Command was when we missed the start of a
show. There is a cute preshow about five minutes before the show. If
you have kids, let them go to the front of the theater for the preshow.
We did not see the Making of Me, the line was very, very long.

11.74 | Body Wars is great | 11SRUS::LOWELL | Ruth 'Disney' Lowell | Wed Nov 22 1989 19:01 | 39 |
| The highlight of our recent trip was going to the Wonders of Life
pavilion on opening day, 10/30. The lines were so long we decided
to look around and then leave. We tried out Body Wars the next
morning with a 10 minute wait around 10:00. Body Wars is great!
We asked one of the cast members why children under 3 shouldn't
ride (ours is 2). She said it has something to do with a muscle
in their back being underdeveloped. But, here's the important
thing for those of you with little ones, they do something called
a "baby switch". This is how it worked. My husband and I both
stood in line with the baby. When we got to the front of the
line they let him go on as the last person in a row. I waited
with the baby while he rode. When his ride was done, I went on
as the first person in the row he had been in and handed him the
baby. This was great since we only had to wait in line once.
We also saw "The Making of Me". It was ok but not great. My
favorite attraction was Cranium Command. We did get to try a
lot of the hands on stuff but it wasn't easy. I think we would
have skipped all of that if we had gone at a busier time.
As for the rest of Epcot, we did all of the Future World stuff
(including some of the hands on stuff in Communicore which we
couldn't get to in busier times) and Mexico in the World
Showcase. We did stroll around there but didn't bother to stop
other than to have some light snacks.
We were really pleased that they were having the Illuminations
show. The park was open until 9:00 with Illuminations at 9:00.
I guess they feel it's worth it to run this even during the
off season. My only gripe is that I haven't found a spot on the
lagoon where I can see ALL of the show. There's always at least
one country that I can't see.
Best of all, my lifetime dream came true on Horizons. I'm not
especially fond of most of this ride but I LOVE that huge movie
screen stuff at the beginning - you know, that wonderful DNA chain!
Well, we were just about in the center of the screen when the
ride stopped. We got to see the whole film (usually you get
to see about 3/4 of it per ride) and some overlap. It was GREAT!

| Going next week! (So excited!) But about Illuminations...
We went to Epcot about three years ago, and wanted to stay for
Illuminations, but it was a wet drizzly day and the show was a dud.
But worst, we were in a really rotton position, and could see
absolutely nothing of the little there was to see.
So, any pointers as to the better locations for viewing Illuminations,
and the right moment to stake your claim?

11.76 | Illuminations Viewing | INDMKT::GOLDBERG | Len, Back From the World | Wed Dec 13 1989 15:34 | 20 |
| You are probably thinking of Laserphonic Fantasy, the show they did
several years ago. I think Illuminations started it's run in the
summer of 1988. It covers much more of the Lagoon, as well as most of
the World Showcase pavilions.
I can recommend a place *not* to stand: where we saw Illuminations
from last month. We had caught the last show of the American
Adventure, and were standing between America and Japan. Since the
American Gardens Theatre juts out into the lagoon just to our right as
we faced Spaceship Earth, our view of most of the east side of the
lagoon was blocked. The westerly view of UK and Canada were blocked by
the small islands in the lagoon. We had hoped to make it back for
another look, but we never made it.
I understand that they set a "sitting on the ground" only area on World
Showcase Plaza. (Where they do the character greetings during the
day.) Our dinner companions that night sat there, and had a great
view. They were also a lot closer to the exit the we were. I don't
know how early you have to stake out your claim. I guess it depends on
how busy Epcot is that day.

We just came back. We ended up in EPCOT 7 out of 8 nights for dinner and we
watched illuminations just about every night.
We would usually watch from around the country where we ate dinner.
On the last night, we watched it from dead center as you enter Wrold Showcase
from Future world. The American pavillion was directly across the lagoon. This
was by far the best place to view the show. In my experience, there is not
even a close second place location.
From other positions around the lagoon, I could not tell what the laser show
was all about. The barges create a "water wall" with fountains and the laser
show is projected onto the water. From our location, you could view this
perfectly. On the other nights, we could not tell what was going on. Also,
the show has has a lot of symetry which is based on watching from that location.
You definately get the senstation that the show is made to viewed from that
location.
They rope off an area in front of the lagoon where you must sit the entire show.
I arrived too late to sit there, but I stood behind and had a good view.
I was standing back far enough that I could not see Mexico or Canada, as they
were on the side of me and obstructed by other buildings.
The show is excellent, but I was surprised that not all of the countries
participate. I don't think that Norway or Morrocco are part of the show.
Another big advantage of staying up front is that you can make a beeline out of
the park after the show. From the back (ie near US pavilion), it takes a long
time to get out and the monorail and busses will be packed. The only time we
had to wait to get on a monorail was when we were in the back of World
Showcase when the show finished. From the front, we were able to walk right
onto a monorial. If you see a long line at the monorial when you get out,
don't be tempted to try the busses. We tried that once and it was terrible.
It took us over 45 minutes to get back to the TTC that night. What a mistake.
Another night we watched from the back, and when we got to the monorail, it was
packed. We stood in line and had to wait for two monorails. That only took
about 12 minutes.
Enjoy yourself.

I agree with the comment about the long lines at the monorail station.
Don't be concerned. We waited only 10 minutes or so then walked non-
stop from the entrance, right up the ramps, and right into a monorail
car. It is reallt amazing how many people Disney can move in a short

Well, I guess we have seen Illuminations maybe 15 times. It just
happens that because of work, vacations and my parents retiring
to Florida that we have been to Florida five times in two years.
And every trip we hit WDW. Anyway, as to where you sit/stand, we
think it depends on what your objectives are.
I agree with the reply that for the absolute best viewing position,
you get a position at the rail of the lagoon at the head of world
showcase. Of course you will stand or sit on the ground. Unless
you get a bench slightly to the side which is a good compromise.
I think a good alternative is the elevated walkway around the Japanese
building. It's 20 feet above the ground and the end faces the lagoon
with a pretty good view. But you have to stand.
A seat in the American theater near the lagoon is not first rate
for view, but comfortable and we love the show in the American
pavilion. If you hit the show 30 minutes before Illuminations, then
you come out just before it starts and usually can get a seat unless
it's the 4th of July or something.
There are a lot of good positions in some of the restaurants but
you can't hear anything so we avoid those.
My favorite spot overall is the Mexican restaurant right on the
lagoon (the outside one, can't remember the name). You get there
an hour before, grab a Dos Equis and mellow out, resting your feet.
Very good view, nice atmosphere, but you need a table close to the
rail or the trees get in the way.

Cantina de San Angel is the name of the outdoor Mexican resturant.
We ate inside the pavillion at the San Angel Inn...outside would've
been better for a family group...although the kids did have fun
keeping the waiters hopping filling water glasses. They were at a
separate table from we adults and took turns guzzling water because
the waiters were so diligent they would spring to refill the kid's
glasses. (We didn't realize this until months later when the kids
were recalling the fun they had at the Mexican resturant).
The menu is almost the same outside as it is inside, but at much
lower prices...and if you time the meal right you've got a good
seat for Illuminations as .81 mentioned.

I need advice!! Seems as though most people either love/hate the Body
Wars attraction in Wonders of Life. We (9, ranging in age from 7-79!)
are showing up there next week (3 days 17 hours, 10 minutes, but who's
counting?) I'm concerned about Body Wars; since nobody has done it,
this would be a logical 'first stop' early in the morning; but I don't
want 2 or 3 of us to get sick or upset by that ride and slow down a
whole day for the whole crew.
I like the Tilt-a-whirl ride at a local amusement park, but decided
after my last WDW trip that I would not ride Big Thunder Mountain
Railroad again, because the jerking from pull of gravity made my back
hurt for the rest of the evening. My daughter on the other hand LOVES
the roller coaster type rides, but does not like the "Circle Vision"
scenes that zoom in over the mountain tops; they make her dizzy &
light-headed.
So what I think I need is some sort of 'quasi-technical' discussion of
the sensations that the body feels . . .
Anybody willing to try to describe?

Ok Maryann I'll bite...
Body wars is a simulation ride. You enter into the chamber and are seat
belted into your chair. The ride itself is a combination of up and down and
back and forth movements (jerking around) and visual things on the screen in
front of you.
I too get motion sick and enjoyed it a few time I did feel a little sick so
I just closed my eyes for a few secs. When I opened them up I was fine.

| Maryann,
Body Wars and Star Tours are identical 'hardware' - 5 or 6
rows of 9 or 10 seats all bolted firmly to the floor. The
simulation of movement is generated by moving the whole floor on
pistons - tilting front to back, side to side, or lifting and
dropping. My 6 yr old daughter, who won't go back onto Big Thunder
after only one ride, had me literally running from exit to
entrance one evening. We got in about 5 trips before they closed
down for the night, and she enjoyed every one! A heavily built
(fat!) friend who came on with us the first time, wouldn't go on
again because he felt a lot of strain on his back.
IMO Star Tours is better, because the film ties in better
with the motion, and if you get dizzy with CircleVision, you will
certainly feel it on Star Tours!
Yes, there is certainly some quite violent motion, but I
agree with Ed, the notices are either hype, or Disney being
extra-cautious. In all the times we rode it, we didn't hear or see
anybody who wanted it stopped mid-ride, and the worst reactions
were stiff arms and shoulder from holding on too tightly!
Although you may not want to rush round to do it again, I
don't think anyone will suffer anything more than a few seconds of
dizziness or disorientation. If you have any doubts though, why
not send in an advance scout who knows the likes/dislikes and
physical limitations of your group.

No. The same type of simulator is used in both rides, but the film and
the program that controls the movement of the "vehicle" are different.
Somewhere I think I read that the capacity of each simulator is 40
people.
Body Wars only lasts about four minutes, so even those prone to motion
sickness shouldn't have too much trouble.

| Our impressions were that the rides are significantly different in
programming. Body Wars is more abrupt and rough - turbulence in
veins, breaking through artery walls etc., Star Tours is slower
and smoother - swooping around planets etc. However, IMO, the
relationship to the films could make you more queasy on ST, with
the long dives etc. It's similar to the effect on a roller
coaster, when dropping from the highest peak, as against being
jolted around on bumper cars.

easy to say to yourself that it's not really off the ground, and there's

Also, the sharp movements do make your back ache when you get off.

| I can't remember if there is an age or height restriction for either
ride, but S T and possibly B W have something they call a "baby check"
(I think). They way it works is if two parents both want to ride, but
don't want to take the child on the ride, they go all the way up to the
entrance of the ride together, then one parent stays outside while the
first parent rides. Then the first parent comes back out the entrance,
gets the child, and waits while the other parent rides. They put the
second parent right at the front of the next group to ride. Then you
all leave together. I thought it was a really good idea and could be
used on a lot of the "scarier" rides. My friend's two youngest children
got all the way to the loading area of Space Mountain and then
chicken-out. So dad had to take them out and get in line all the way at
the end again.
I bet if you asked at the bigger rides if they would do this "baby
check" plan, they'd all agree. I only heard it actually mentioned at
S T.

Star Tours was great - movement was smoother, and seemed much more

way through the ride. Body Wars just felt like more of a shake-em-up
machine.
If in doubt, try it out anyway. It's a short ride (I remember thinking,
"I wish this thing would end pretty soon", and then it did.)

| I have ridden Body Wars once and Star Tours twice. My first
ride was on Body Wars in the back row. I came out feeling
slightly queasy - I was glad the ride ended when it did. My
second (Star Tours) and third (Body Wars) rides were in the
middle rows and caused no problems.
To give you an idea of what the ride is like -- they had a
similar type of ride at Chuck E. Cheese's in Manchester, NH
a few years ago (may still be there) where you got to "ride"
a rollercoaster (The Beast from King's Dominion?). Star Tours
and Body Wars are like that but much more refined. If you
don't know what I'm talking about, imagine watching the scenes
in "Star Wars" where they blow up the Death Star. Remember
how the X-wing fighters flew into the ridge of the Death Star
and did some pretty amazing flying? Well, that's the type of
stuff you'll be doing. You will sense forward motion, steep
drops, banked turns, etc. The motion in Body Wars is the
same except it takes place in the blood stream. Being in the
blood stream means you feel each heartbeat which is where the
turbulence comes in. I don't want to give too many details but
I do remember the turbulence being more noticeable when you
cross various barriers (such as entering a capillary) and when
your vehicle's motion is driven by the blood circulating.
My opinion is, try Star Tours first then Body Wars if you feel
up to it. You may also want to avoid sitting in the back row.
The seats in the back row are higher so your feet can't touch
the floor which means you get thrown around more. If you like
roller coasters, volunteer for the back row! and leave the
middle/front seats for us chickens.
As for small children, the don't recommend letting children
under age 3 ride on either Body Wars or Star Tours. I asked why
and was told that there is a muscle in their back that isn't
fully developed until then and may be injured. We were also
warned that they couldn't (wouldn't) stop the ride so if Nicole
got scared, we would be stuck. We opted to do a baby switch on
both rides. Nicole (2 1/2) was very frightened by the drops on
Pirates of the Caribbean and the Norway ride so we figured she
would be frightened by the simulators. If she hadn't been afraid,
I would have brought her on Star Tours but not Body Wars.
I hope this helps.

RE: -.104
I'd reccommend skipping Body Warrs if you have a very
sensitive back. It has some quick "snappy" motions to it that might
cause you some problems. Star Tours is a little smoother but not by
much.
My wife and I really enjoyed these rides, even though she can get a
tinge of motion sickness she did well in those rides. I would guess
she was saying, as someone else was, I wish this would hurry up and end
and it did!
I like them becasue theya re a step above the old Omnitheater films
that used to give you that motion sensation, but without any
coordinated movement of the ground underneath you. You remember the
ones where you watched a roller coaster from the the front seat being
filmed and when it went around a corner if you looked at everyone
watching they would be leaning into the turn!!!
I would say that if you can take thunder mountain, you can handle
these rides.....

have some obstructions for the Mexico and/or Canada portions.
I'm convinced that they planned the show so that each view has
some obstructions to guarantee repeat visits.
If you plan on taping, there is a spot just a little to the
left (toward Mexico) that seemed to have a good view plus a
stone wall (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) that would serve
as a good tripod. We sat between Mexico and China to tape and
got bad results. First, we were downwind so the smoke from the
fireworks blocked the view. Second, we were looking at the
fountains from an angle so the laser part didn't come out well.

Article 489 of rec.arts.disney:
From: [email protected]
The current fireworks show at EPCOT is called IllumiNations, and is the third
generation show at the park. The first show was called "A New World Fantasy",
and was pretty much limited to fountain and lighting effects. Some
pyrotechincs were included at the end. This show was replaced by Laserphonic
Fantasy, which included the addition of a 30 foot blue sphere. The surface of
the sphere is covered with tens of thousands of fiber optic "pores" that allow
images to be displayed. The sphere also contains several lasers which can
project images into the "water screens." (More later.) The sphere also
contains concealed fog jets that can cover it with fog in seconds with the
help of some liquid nitrogen.
Surrounding the sphere, or "laser barge", are four firework/fountain barges.
These barges were oringally used in A New World Fantasy and contain water jets,
pyrotechnics, and colored lights. Large projection screens were replaced by
two large poles which sprinkle water into a vertical sheet. The water sheet
is used as a screen for projecting images from the laser barge.
There are three lasers on land. One is located on the southwest corner of
Mexico on the roof. The second is located on the top floor of Canada's replica
of the Chateau de Frontenac. The third is located in the center window of
the third floor of the American Adventure. All three of these lasers are
powerful argon lasers which emit cyan light. This light can be split into
blue or green beams. The projection of the laser is accomplished by a
"scanner", a high-speed computer-controlled device that can move the beams
hundreds of times per second. Mirrors, located on top of other World
Showcase pavillions reflect the lasers, to give the appearance that they
oringate from many different buildings.
Twelve high powered colored spotlights are also located on the roofs of every
country and Communicore. These lights are gimbal mounted and are under
computer control.
The show is controlled by several small computers, but show cueing and
synchonization is handled by EPCOT Center's main computer room. Announcements
are made automatically before the show and lights are dimmed accordingly.
Illuminations is very similar to Laserphonic Fantasy but involves the addition
of edge lighting effects for every country. Also firework canons located
at water level around the lagoon shoot flameballs up and over the center
of World Showcase (an incredible effect.)
Where do they store they barges during the day??? Behind China. A canal exists
right next to the China pavillion that leads to a hidden docking/storage area
for the barges. The bridge over the canal is a fully functional drawbridge
and oftens stops guests several times for a few minutes in the late afternoon
when the barges are moved. When deployed, the laser barge is secured to a
special low-profile dock in the middle of the lagoon which supplies high
voltage and chilled water for its lasers.
Many nights after the park closes, show producers often tinker with different
aspects of the show. It is not uncommon to see a slightly different show on
two consecutive nights. The soundtrack remains the same, but it's very likely
to detect a subtle change in lighting, laser, or fireworks effects.
IllumiNations is stongly themed in that it showcases every country.
Laserphonic Fantasy was much more abstract. In my opinion, Laserphonic Fantasy
was better. It seems designers are getting carried away with all of these
improvements. Blinking the edge lighting on all of the World Showcase
pavillions is overkill. Laserphonic Fantasy was simple, elegant, and
extraordinary. Illuminations seems to be the result of some bored show
designers.
I say these things only after seeing both shows several dozen times each.
I think both shows are incredible, but to me, Laserphonic Fantasy was the
best show to date. I also miss William Pierce, the Laserphonic Fantasy
announcer. (Pierce was famous for his announcing of the Boston Pops
Orchestra.) I'm sure Disney would have used him again, but I understand
he has passed away. The one new feature that really impresses me is the
firework launch from around the lake that I mentioned earlier. This is
a really "cool" effect. Hats off to whoever came up with this one.
The music for each is composed of several classical pieces. Disney has yet
to release either soundtrack.
Still want more info? Inquire at EPCOT outreach in Communicore West. They
will be happy to give you brief techincal documentation and a music list.

11.117 | QUESTOR you Say? | ATE012::BERUBE | Calling Dick Tracy... | Tue Sep 04 1990 11:09 | 67 |
| Caution, this is a non-Disney trip report of sorts.
This note is in relation to the ongoing debate as to which is
better/rougher etc concerning Star Tours and Body Wars (of which I have
yet to experience). I know there'll be some Disney purest out there
that asked why is this here (myself included ;^)), but I didn't feel
like starting a new topic and I felt it kinda belonged here since this
is were the discussion is taken place.
I know your probably saying to yourself enough allready get to the
point, what the hell is this guy talkinig about. Well you see (As I
keep the suspense up) I just came back from a wonderfull and I might
add deserved 2 week vacation, the only bad part was that it wasn't at
that magical place. During my vacation I spent a week in Virginia in
which I had the pleasure to visit Busch Garderns Old Country in
Williamburg Virginia.
What does a discussion of Busch Gardens has to do with Disney you might
ask?
Well let me tell you, Disney is not the only place with the Star
Tours/Body Wars flight simulator technology type of ride you see.
Since June of this year Busch Gardens has their new ride called
QUESTOR, which is based on the technology that made Star Tours/Body
Wars famous to you Disney Freaks. Questor is a 4 minute ride that take
you on a journey though a mystical land in search of a rare crystal
called Fribilliumn which is used to power the Questor Craft, your
guide/pilot is a Mystical Troll looking character whose name escape me
at moment. Your craft flys though the air, drills itself into an
icepack, swims under water and so on.
This ride was fantastic, I can't wait to experience the Disney
versions. I had the opportunity to ride it twice, once front row
center and second, off to the center in the last row. Toward the back
you get a much better and I might add rougher ride for you motion
sickness types. When in the fron row I had a hard time focussing my
eyes to the movie, this row is just to close to the screen, and the
movements though large as that in the back, you had a tendency to miss
out on the actio so to speak, since you could focus on the screen as
well as watch the 2 smaller screens (one on each side) that you can see
you pilot do it's things. However from the middle to the back you had
a much better view of the screen plus watching all those peoplke in
front of you bounce around.
Questor like Star Tours and Body Wars (based on what I read here in the
file) is comprised of a common pre-show area where you are introduced
to the charactors of the show and the basic story outline. The is a
door on each side in which depending on the time you enter pre-staging
for one of the two flight similators (for a lack of a better name). In
the pre-staging area you are asked to stand on a light, which reperents
a seat in a given row, facing the doors the left is the front and the
right is the back in both pre-staging areas. Once everyone is standing
on a light you listean to a little note from a cast member (note I saw
a few Cast Member only sign in Busch Gardens, apparently they have
taken a few other ideas from Disney) you enter the ride, and your off.
So for any of you Disney adics out htere who want to see what all the
hype is about Star Tours and Body Wars but can't quite come up with the
$$'s to visit your favorite Magical place right now but live near
Williamsburg Virginia, riding Questor at Busch Gardens is one way to
satify your anticipation

| Claude,
My kids preferred Star Tours to Body Wars 6 to 1 (make that 6 rides to
1). They said that Star Tours was more fun and more exciting than Body
Wars. They said that Star Tours made you feel like you were flying and
Body Wars was a much more bumby ride and less thrilling.
I went on Star Tours about 4 times and opted to pass on Body Wars (it
could have been the 90 minute wait that helped me in that decision).

I prefer Star Tours over Body Wars by far. I found that Body Wars did not
induce the feeling of motion as well, becuase it had a poor frame of reference.
We're not familiar with the setting inside the body, and the space seems
confining. Star Tours is a more familiar setting, so we are dragged in
to the fantasy more readily, and it has the appearance of wide open
spaces so a supposed 6 Km "fall" to the death star seems oh so far...so fast.

I agree. My nephew and I much preferred Star Tours to Body Wars (only
5 to 1, though ;-). And the line we had to wait in at EPCOT didn't
seem worth it. I kept thinking about all the things it was keeping me
from (especially once the "ride" was over).
On a positive note, however, I did like the FX when we entered the

During the Disney Channel's WDW 20th Anniversary special, they spent a

It seemed to be a Space Mountain-like attraction except you're riding

showing off the futures of the three Disney Parks. They had a model and
artist renditions of DiscoverLand as well as attractions at EPCOT and the Magic
Kingdom.
There were sketches of the Mt Fuji Ride for the Japan pavillion, though
I got the impression it was a toboggan ride, not a rollercoaster. A roller
coaster would make more sense since there is also suppose to be a Switzerland
Pavillion complete with Matterhorn ride. So looks like Epcot will have two
mountains with rollercoaster/toboggans through them! Also, there where sketches
for a ginza district for Japan, lots of Neon and electronics :-)

| Yes, It is faster to reach just about any World Showcase attraction
first thing in the morning by using the International Gateway entrance.
However, I think it is better to visit Future World attractions first,
while there are no crowds, then move the World Showcase after the
crowds start forming (1-2 hours after opening) and then return to
Future World later, after the crowds start moving into World Showcase.
I think that American Adventure (AA) is about the worst attraction to
see first, because you can always get into the next show, regardless of
the time of day, because the AA's capacity is so large. I like to get
the real bottlenecks out of the way first thing in the morning (like
Body Wars) before the crowds arrive.

I don't know for sure, but I highly doubt that we will have
Mt. Fuji ride in Tokyo Disneyland in the near future.
They have a major construction going on in TDL when I last

I hope they are not planning to eliminate imageworks. I have
always enjoyed it. It does suffer from the same problems as the
communicore buildings in that you have to wait your turn in order to
use most of the displays. People seem to blow right on through
rather than waiting and trying out some of the "toys".
Disney does want the attractions that they spend upkeep money on to
attract guests in order to justify the maint cost so you never know,
they could put Imageworks on the chopping block in the future.

Subject: Update to the American Adventure

Organization: General DataComm, Middlebury CT
During my visit to WDW last week, I stopped into the see the 'new and improved'
version of the American Adventure. I was told that there was some changes to
the AA's and the sequence where there are familar faces on the screen. I found
out later that this is refered to as the "Golden Dream" sequence.
The AA's that were changed were Susan B. Anthony, Will Rodgers (sp?) and the
final appearance of Ben Franklin and Mark Twain (when they are on the torch of
the Statue of Liberty. In this scene Ben and Mark shake hands and wave good-bye
at the end. In all these AA's are very realistic and I was amazed at the
difference. I was also told that all of the AA's were reprogrammed.
In the Golden Dream sequence I was looking for the changes and they did not
simply make additions, they completly changed this sequence. I looked for
familar faces and I did not find John (The Duke) Wayne. There were still a lot
of faces I recognized though but I didn't know who they all were but I wanted
to find out.
I went to EPCOT Center outreach and they were more than happy to print out a
list for me. Now what kind of person would I be if I didn't share this info
with everyone? No need to find out as the complete list is included.

this is the official kickoff of "Celebrate Broadway:100 Years in Times

The only new developments that I recall are still in planning (or even

Does anyone else know of anything else?

| Does anyone know if you can only use the International Gateway if
you're a resort guest?? Or is it open to the general public??
The reason I ask is that I'd like to check out the Yacht and Beach
Clubs on our next trip and thought a visit to Beaches and Cream would
be a nice break from EPCOT during one afternoon. But it would only
make sense if you could use the International Gateway; hence the
question...
Also, when I was last down in WDW in '90, there was no security at the
Swan and Dolphin to prevent you from parking there and checking out
those hotels. So I'm wondering if it's possible to park at any one of
the EPCOT hotels and enter via the International Gateway... This would
be a mighty convenient alternative to battling the crowds after
Illuminations. Anyone know if this is possible??
Just curious...

Definitely open. You can exit/enter at will, if accompanied by a valid

the EPCOT resorts were done. A side trip to BEACHES & CREAM can be a
welcome afternoon break!

I have never encountered resistance to parking at the SWAN, DOLPHIN, YACHT,
or BEACH CLUB resorts. In fact, the Beach Club is the closest and it's
quite a long walk from all the others. If you try to leave via Int'l Gate
after IllumiNations, be aware that it can be difficult to fight the tide
of people heading for the main entrance unless you're very near the Int'l
Gateway.

re: plans
Mike S. had posted a query about planned changes for the EPCOT
attractions and I stumbled across some information in rec.arts.disney
the other day. This info appeared in the Orlando Sentinel.
Some of the changes in store for ECPOT include:
Spaceship Earth will undergo major changes and could be closed for
up to six months. No indication as to when this will occur.
Captain EO will be replaced by a new film likely based on "Honey, I
Shrunk the Kids". :-P
And Nestle has changes planned for the Land pavilion including new
footage for "Symbiosis", replacing the Kitchen Kabaret with something
called Food Rocks, redecoration of the Land Grille, and turning the
food court into an outdoor park (!!). All this is scheduled to be
completed by June 1994.
That was about it...
As much as I'd like to see Captain EO replaced, I can't say I'm
thrilled with a new 3-D movie based on an existing Disney flick. It
doesn't seem appropriate for EPCOT; it sounds more like something for
MGM.
And Nestle certainly isn't wasting much time, but I'm real curious as
to how they'd pull of converting the food court...

It could be that MUPPETVISION 4D really shows the generation gap in 3D
technology so EO goes. I sort of agree with you on the "Honey" thing
but what the heck...I can live with it.
Spaceship Earth...I think they will try to squeeze in more stuff and
possible cut back on the size of each display.
The Land...well Nestle's want to do their own thing and it's their
money. Hope the Land Grille doesn't change much...it's one of my
favorite places.
All done by June 1994....yo Skip aren't you going in May of '94?

Yup, it seems to be my luck that things are being added/finished just
*after* we go down. But there's always the chance that there'll be
"soft openings" and the like. Besides, I think it's only the Land
stuff that'll be done in June, though I hope Spaceship Earth won't be
down for re-hab.

| Steve,
EPCOT isn't usually a favorite with kids. However I think they'd like
most of the Future World stuff, especially Imagination, Wonders of
Life, and Living Seas. The Universe of Energy, Spaceship Earth, and
Horizons may also be popular with them.
World Showcase has maybe three attractions that the kids will enjoy.
The Maelstrom (Norway), American Adventure, and maybe The River of Time
(Mexico). The rest is iffy depending upon your kids.
Put Image Works (Upstairs from Journey Into Imagination) on your list.

| It has been a while since I went to EPCOT but something else you
could try which they may like and I know I loved would be
any of the 360 degree theatre shows. It is all vague to me but
I seemed to remember Canada, China and France having them. It is
really stunning for adults (in my opinion) and because of the
360 degress affect and feeling like you are moving when not, the
kids might like it, I do not know? If you had time try at least
one. Since it was 10 years ago when I saw these there may be more
or less now. They could very well be bored silly with them too.
Maybe someone else has kids that went through these. The laser show
at night would be great also, I assume they still have it.

Cranium Command loved by Claire and confused Robert.

The Living Seas surprised them, and amused them for 15 minutes. I think
if we hadn'r been to Sea World the previous day it would have had more
impact!
Land was closed when we went.
Both liked Spaceship Earth - we did this around 3pm and there was no
queue.

11.185 | SPlashtacular Info | WREATH::SCOPA | | Wed Dec 15 1993 15:06 | 25 |
| Here are some bits 'n' pieces on Splashtacular:
- The show features up to 60 performers, characters, and technicians.
- The water sprays up to 150 feet high.
- The show takes place on a specially constructed stage surrounding
Epcot Center's fountains, with Spaceship Earth serving as a backdrop.
- Epcot Center's fountains have been enhanced for the show.
- Mickey, decked out in a tux, takes on the forces of good and evil.
- The 20-minute show includes water, music, villians, and a
kaleidoscope of color.
- Minnie, Donald, Chip, Dale, Goofy, and Pluto create a symphony of
colors.
- Futuristic dancers appear on the stage.
- An evil alien sorceress appears and conjures up an intergalactic
nemesis - a monster that towers 4 sories above the stage (20 feet
higher than Communicore).
- This "duo of darkness" steal Mickey's colors.
- A battle takes place and hopefully good will triumph over evil with
an eventual rainbow appearing.
- Amazingly there will be up to five performances a day, five times a
week.
It sounds like a taste of Fantasmic...much smaller in stature.

The recent Disney Channel Magazine talked about this new attraction
and, although a few months back I was thinking it would be just another
Communicore like attraction, it is far different.
Recalling from memory here is what you'll find at Innoventions:
- Bill Nye: The Science Guy talking about the world of science.
- The latest in computers from Apple and IBM (I know what you're
thinking).
- Sega Center that offers visitors a chance to test some games
before they go on the market...sort of a field test site.
- There are some Virtual Reality things including some type of
ride, Flight Simulater, and a second ride type VR attraction
with an Aladdin theme.
- There is an area that talks about the latest in audio and
video technologies.
- Something like a "Home of the Future" attraction will also
be part of Innoventions. I think it's here that we meet a new
Disney character called "Carrotini" but I'm a but unsure about
this.
- I also remember reading about some type of water fountain that
will shoot water 150 feet into the air.
All this on July 1 at EPCOT '94.

11.201 | Sega - A big part of Innoventions | WREATH::SCOPA | | Thu Jun 23 1994 10:31 | 52 |
|
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 22, 1994--Sega of America Inc. today
announced its three year commitment to "Innoventions," Epcot '94's
permanent showcase for emerging products of industry and technology.
Thomas J. Kalinske, president and CEO of Sega, will unveil a scale model
of the exhibit today at the Consumer Electronics Show. The 10,000 square
foot exhibit, the largest dedicated space at Innoventions, opens July 1
and will allow visitors to preview the near future of interactive
entertainment.
"Sega is shaping the evolution of digital interactive home
entertainment," Kalinske said. "At Innoventions, we can share our vision
and technology with consumers even before most of these products come to
market."
Sega's exhibit space itself was designed to recreate the look and feel of
interactive gameplay. The evolutionary exhibit features 140 free Genesis,
Sega CD, and Game Gear gameplay stations with the hottest new software
titles. Visitors will be able to mingle with Sonic The Hedgehog and test
the newest game titles, while previewing the latest arcade games and home
entertainment technology, such as the Sega Channel and Edge-16, which will
allow gamers to compete with one another over a telephone line. In fact,
it will be demonstrated via a phone hook-up with another location in the
pavilion.
"We are excited to showcase what we know to be the future of home
entertainment," said Shinobu Toyoda, executive vice president at Sega.
"There is a new paradigm emerging in home entertainment that needs to be
recognized by all members of the family. Disney is the perfect place to
reach mom, dad and the kids."
The exhibit is divided into five environments: Action/Adventure, Sports,
Family and Kids, Future and the Arcade. Each area features video games,
graphics, lights, music and theme design elements that enhance the
interactive experience: the Sports arena is dominated by a scorecard
thrusting nearly 20 feet overhead; and the Family and Kids area will
incorporate a 10-foot-tall statue of Sonic The Hedgehog and whimsical
clouds floating overhead.
In the center of the exhibit is an Arcade which features two of the
latest arcade games incorporating state-of-the-art technology: Virtua
Formula racing and the AS-1. Virtua Formula racing incorporates the
newest polygon-graphic technology and offers a realistic simulation of
Formula One racing as guests drive a full-motion replica of Formula One
race cars. The AS-1 invites guests to board a three-axis simulator and
compete against each other in a dynamic game of motion, sight and sound.
Dynamic light boxes, game character cut-outs, fiber-optics signs, and
video monitors tied to laser discs punctuate the exhibit's superstructure
of towers and trusses that connect exhibit areas to one another.
At 10,000 square feet, Sega's exhibit space is larger than any other
exhibitor by 50 percent.
Sega of America is the arm of Tokyo-based Sega Enterprises Ltd.
responsible for the development, marketing and distribution of Sega
products in the Americas. Sega Enterprises Ltd. is a nearly $4 billion
company known as a leader in interactive digital, entertainment media,
with operations on five continents.

I was disappointed when I got to the VIRTUA and AS-1 area. There was
a sign saying that we need to purchase tickets for VIRTUA and AS-1 at
the EPCOT Center ticket counters!!!! No wonder there was not much of
a line there even the building was packed with people. I was not
ready to rush out back to the ticket area to purchase the ticket in
the 90+ degrees temperature. I did not even want to find out how much
it would cost. I thought everything was included in our 5 day pass.
Well, we just skipped it. Hope they will change it soon.

Honey, I shrunk the Audience: Best new attraction in a long time.
Has people talking about it loooong after seeing it. Let's not
spoil the fun, shall we, for those of us who have seen it.
Spaceship Earth: Some new set work throughout and completely new at the
end. They replace the soundtrack, though, with a new one by
Jeremey Irons. I preferred Walter Cronkite.
Just About to open:
Harvest Theatre now showing "Circle of Life" (as of Saturday 1/14
if it went as planned.)
Not sure it it's new or not:
In Canada, a brass quartet (Canadian Corps?) doing a hilarious
parody of Illuminations, which they call the "1813 Overture."
In Japan, a street performer who entertains with magic, carvings, and just
plain funny antics. He works alone using a small cart with all his
props.

AT&T UNVEILS NEW EPCOT PAVILION;
VISITORS EXPERIENCE 21ST CENTURY'S 'GLOBAL NEIGHBORHOOD'
ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T (NYSE: T) unveiled the world
of future communication here today at EPCOT's Spaceship Earth pavilion.
One of EPCOT'S most popular attractions since its 1982 debut, the new ride
and an interactive communications exhibit area entertains visitors of all
ages with the wonders of AT&T's leading-edge technology.
"AT&T is proud to present an all new Spaceship Earth pavilion, where
communication becomes magical -- not mystical," said Earl Quenzel,
Marketing Director, Consumer Communications Services, winner of the 1994
Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. "We're showing people the many
new ways that communications will enhance their lives."
Inside the famous 180-foot geosphere, visitors to Spaceship Earth board a
train to journey through time and witness the evolution of communications.
The ride traces the development of language and literature from primitive
eras, through the Renaissance and industrialization to the 21st Century
information age.
With a new musical score and a narration by Academy Award-winning actor
Jeremy Irons, the exhibit's dramatic, new production, dazzling special
effects and technologies never used before in a Disney show, includes
twelve completely new show scenes. The ride climaxes with a breathtaking
new planetarium view of the Earth, and shows that distance is no longer a
barrier -- the entire world is our next door neighbor.
In the post-ride show -- called the Global Neighborhood -- visitors
experience innovative, hands-on communications exhibits, many created by
Walt Disney Imagineering using technology developed by AT&T Bell
Laboratories.
"When visitors leave our pavilion, we want them to understand that our
communications technology is easy-to-use," said Quenzel. "They'll see
that AT&T makes it easy for them to communicate with the important people
in their lives -- anytime, anywhere."
As an added feature, AT&T offers a "Global Neighborhood" complimentary
discussion guide to Spaceship Earth visitors. Designed for parents and
teachers to stimulate further discussion and learning among children, the
guide traces the evolution and value of communications to convey the
thrilling realization that "the future is now." The guide is available in
EPCOT's Discovery Center (adjacent to Spaceship Earth) or by writing to
GLOBAL NEIGHBORHOOD GUIDE, AT&T, Room 2333F2, 295 N. Maple Avenue, Basking
Ridge, N.J. 07920.
Members of the AT&T True Rewards(sm) program can redeem points toward
vacation packages at The Walt Disney World Resort, as well as certificates
for merchandise from The Disney Store, merchandise certificates for The
Disney Catalog, and a 6-month subscription to The Disney Channel. For
more information, consumers can call 1-800-7REWARD.

Body Wars is a simulation ride. 30 or so people sit in individual seats in
a room. Each is secured with a seatbelt. The combination of the movement of
the "room" and the graphics on a movie screen up front make you feel as if you
are flying through the veins, heart, brain, etc. of a person. Most of this
is visual, but the room does tip and lurch back and forth and up and down.
The movement is pretty jarring; not at all smooth stops and starts. I was
on this last week, and even for adults it's tough not to flop around a bit
in the seats, and I was sure glad to have the seatbelt on. I felt like my
feet barely reached the floor and my legs were swinging back and forth. As
usual, this sort of thing gives me motion sickness, so I closed my eyes
through at least half of it. :-)

moving roller coaster) at all. It was a toss up as to whether he'd like
the simulation rides; luckily he did.
Back to the future is another simulation ride and is at Universal Studios.
The effects are incredible, and the amount of movement that the car does is
much more and much rougher (I think) than either Star Tours or Body Wars.

| Body Wars is very rough. I enjoyed it, but not *because* it was rough.
As for children, when Evan was 5ish, he went on Star Tours at Disneyland and
did *not* like it. It was too rough for him and he felt sick afterwards.
This year (age 7) he wanted to try it at WDW, and I told him that he wouldn't
feel as sick if he either kept his eyes forward on the screen or else shut
them. He kept his eyes straight ahead on the screen, and *loved* it.
A few days later we went on Body Wars and he liked that, too, but it was
a *lot* rougher than Star Tours, and you get little warning which direction
it will go next. It's almost like the screen and your movements don't match
as well as when you're doing Star Tours.
If in doubt, start with Star Tours and see how they do there.

-< Sega at Innoventions >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CHICAGO, June 23 /CNW/ - Sega today announced its three year commitment
to ``Innoventions,'' Epcot '94's permanent showcase for emerging products
of industry and technology.
``Sega is shaping the evolution of digital interactive home
entertainment,'' Kalinske said. ``At Innoventions, we can share our vision
and technology with consumers even before most of these products come to
market.''
In fact,
it will be demonstrated via a phone hook-up with another location in the
pavilion.
``We are excited to showcase what we know to be the future of home
entertainment,'' said Nancy Bassett, Director of Marketing for Sega of
Canada. ``There is a new paradigm emerging in home entertainment that
needs to be recognized by all members of the family. Disney is the perfect
place to reach mom, dad and the kids.''
Virtua Formula racing incorporates the newest
polygon-graphic technology and offers a realistic simulation of Formula
One racing as guests drive a full-motion replica of Formula One race cars.
The AS-1 invites guests to board a three-axis simulator and compete
against each other in a dynamic game of motion, sight and sound.
Dynamic light boxes, game character cut-outs, fibre-optics signs, and
video monitors tied to laser discs punctuate the exhibit's superstructure
of towers and trusses that connect exhibit areas to one another.
At 10,000 square feet, Sega's exhibit space is larger than any other
exhibitor by 50 percent.
Sega of Canada, Inc. is a subsidiary of Sega of America, Inc.
headquartered in Redwood City, California. Sega of America is in turn a
wholly-owned subsidiary of Sega Enterprises Ltd., of Japan, which
generated $4 billion in worldwide sales last year.

And now comes Disney World for the wired generation.
Hoping to update the earnest-science-teacher image of its Epcot Center,
Walt Disney World is about to open an exposition called Innoventions, a
showcase of consumer electronics and creature comforts from the near future.
The Lake Buena Vista, Fla., layout includes wrist telephones,
computerized guitars and a house in which all the plumbing, heating and
lighting thinks for itself.
It's as if Disney had combined the Sharper Image catalogue and one of
those utopian AT&T ``You Will'' television commercials about the digital
future.
Indeed, AT&T is one of the dozens of companies whose gadgetry will be on
display at Innoventions, which opens for previews on Friday and opens
officially in September.
On Wednesday, Michael D. Eisner, chairman of the Walt Disney Co., will
be in Manhattan for a news conference at the Waldorf Astoria to promote
Innoventions, which he described in a recent news release as a place where
``the public will enjoy a privileged glimpse into their own future and
that of their children.''
Epcot Center, which opened in 1982, has always been a technological
daydream. The name, in fact, is an acronym for Experimental Prototype
Communities of Tomorrow. But now Disney World sees tomorrow as a bit more
hip than it used to.
One of the Innovention attractions will be Aladdin's Magic Carpet, where
spectators will watch on overhead monitors as participants wearing
virtual-reality headsets take a carpet ride through Disney-animated
cyberspace.
Epcot Center guests ``may never go to Mars,'' Eisner said, ``but they
will use the information superhighway, advanced computer software, digital
television, virtual reality, voice-controlled appliances, electric cars
and smart-house features they will try for the first time at Innoventions.''

Imagineering Lab Showcases Immersive 'Aladdin' Experience in
New Innoventions Pavilion at Walt Disney World Resort
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:
DIS) and Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) today unveiled the Walt Disney
Imagineering (WDI) Labs at Epcot Center, Orlando, Fla., which offers a
sneak preview of Disney's first work in virtual reality. Based on the
full-length animated film, "Aladdin," the new exhibit combines Silicon
Graphics' visual computing expertise with the creative talents of the Walt
Disney Imagineering team.
"The entertainment industry is the technology driver of the decade.
By collaborating with Disney, the unparalleled leader in defining the
animation experience, we will set a new standard for the converging worlds
of technology and entertainment," said Mike Ramsay, senior vice president
of Silicon Graphics' Visual Systems Group. "Today's audiences expect
experiences that are realistic, exciting and interactive. WDI delivers
Disney's renowned technical mastery and artistic innovation, while giving
audiences a taste of next-generation virtual reality entertainment."
The Walt Disney Imagineering Labs is designed to give the public a
glimpse of how Disney creates its magic. Nearly half the Labs' exhibit
replicates the actual working environment at Walt Disney Imagineering in
Glendale, Calif. The exhibit highlights "Imagineers at work" creating
virtual reality experiences on Silicon Graphics' family of computer systems.
The other portion of the Labs is designed for guests of Walt Disney
World to immerse themselves in Aladdin's town of "Agrabah." Guests will be
taken through Agrabah in a quest for Aladdin's lamp, where they view,
interact and virtually "fly" through scenes from the movie.
From four virtual reality flight stations, guests will experience a
"test flight" aboard the film's popular magic carpet -- all in a virtual
world created with Silicon Graphics systems. Guests view the experience on
miniature wide-angle television screens contained in head-mounted displays
and control the images they see by grasping the edge of the magic carpet.
The Walt Disney Imagineering Labs also feature a real-time computer
version of Iago, the classic Disney animated character from Aladdin,
who hosts the experience and travels with guests. A breakthrough in
real-time character animations, Iago can exhibit more than 100 movements
including gestures such as winking, laughing and crying.
To create this level of animation and realism, WDI utilizes Silicon
Graphics' Onyx(TM) graphics supercomputers, which deliver the world's
fastest graphics and advanced supercomputing performance. The Onyx
systems, which incorporate RealityEngine2(TM) graphics subsystems, are at
the technological heart of the exhibit. The systems provide a combination
of high frame rates, sharp pictures and rich scenes that are animated
in real-time using the IRIS Performer(TM) application software. WDI also
utilizes Silicon Graphics' Indigo2(TM) desktop systems for modeling and
animation design. All Silicon Graphics systems are based on the powerful
64-bit MIPS(R) RISC microprocessor architecture from MIPS Technologies
Inc.
"To develop a true virtual reality experience that allows visitors to
enter and become immersed in the Aladdin environment, Walt Disney
Imagineering Labs required the performance and high-end graphics
capabilities of the world's most advance supercomputers," said Jon Snoddy,
senior show designer at WDI. "Silicon Graphics is a company which
builds itself around pushing the high-end graphics envelope. It has been
exciting to work together to build a real-time system that will produce
Disney-quality story and art."
Walt Disney Imagineering Labs will be fully operational in Fall 1994.
WDI will continue to embrace future Silicon Graphics technology as it
enhances the virtual world software and migrates from the sneak preview
forum to other Disney venues.
Silicon Graphics Inc. is a leading manufacturer of high-performance
visual computing and data server systems. The company delivers
interactive three-dimensional graphics, digital media and multiprocessing
supercomputing technologies to technical and commercial environments
through direct and indirect channels. Its subsidiary, MIPS Technologies
Inc., designs and licenses the industry's leading RISC processor
technology for the computer systems and embedded control markets.
Silicon Graphics has offices worldwide and headquarters in Mountain View.

addition to Disney's EPCOT '94. Innoventions is also the home to GM's 4,000
square foot exhibit featuring the Impact and EV technology.
"We're enthusiastic about the opportunity to showcase our
state-of-the-art electric vehicle technology, and at the same time expand
our 14-year partnership with Walt Disney World," said Philip
Guarascio, GM vice-president of marketing and advertising. "GM's participation
at Innoventions is a natural fit -- showcasing the latest inventions
and innovations."
The centerpiece of the new GM display is the original prototype
Impact electric car, which debuted at the Los Angeles auto show in 1990.
The exhibit, which focuses on EV education, features components and
materials that comprise the technologically advanced electric vehicle, such
as the magnesium seat frame and steering wheel rim, inductively coupled
charging system, T-shaped lead-acid battery pack, and AC induction motor.
In addition to the displays, a GM representative entertains
Innoventions visitors with a fun and fact-filled oration on the Impact and EV
technology.
"The display also serves as a tribute to the men and women of
GM, and their dedication to developing advanced technologies and
producing world-class vehicles," Guarascio said. "We are very proud to be
an industry leader in EV technology, and we want the world to know."
To highlight the opening ceremonies, Green drove up to the
event in a limited-production Impact. The vehicle is one of 50 prototypes
currently in the hands of potential EV customers as part of GM's two-year
PrEViewDrive Program, planned to cover 12 U.S. cities. In conjunction with each
city's utility company, GM is researching the future needs of EV
customers and the infrastructure necessary to support EVs in the
marketplace. More than 1,000 utility customers will drive the prototypes for
two- or four-week periods. The program is currently running in Los
Angeles and Phoenix, and will begin in San Francisco in October.

was told that when World of Motion closes this fall for revamping,
they are going to reopen Horizons. They are still looking for a
sponsor which is why it is curently closed. I was told that it
would be unchanged whne it opens this fall. I guess that they don't
want to have two buildings closed at the same time. I'm not sure
if it will close when World of Motion reopens. The CM didn't know
what the future plans for Horizons would be.

Feb. 13--General Motors Corp. spent the early '90s trying to stanch
record losses. Now it's raking in record profits, and it's time for a
vacation.
GM is heading for Disney World.
Today, executives will unveil plans for a new and improved World of
Motion, GM's automobile theme exhibit at Epcot Center in Orlando, Fla.
The renovated World of Motion will have two parts.
GM Preview Center, now open in a temporary pavilion, is a museum.
Test Track, which will open in spring of 1997, is a ride that lets
thrill-seekers pretend they're test drivers.
"You'll feel like you're right on the proving ground," said Phil
Guarascio, general manager of GM marketing. "The Test Track lets you
experience what it's like to drive over a cobblestone road or through harsh
weather conditions just like a test engineer."
GM executives wouldn't divulge the cost of the Disney pavilion, a
nonprofit venture whose goal is to make people more aware of GM as the
world's No. 1 automaker. But John Maciarz, the Orlando-based director of
World of Motion, said the site will be "one of the most popular spots in
Disney World -- if not the most popular spot."
The old World of Motion, which closed in January, was an animated tour
of transportation history. The display used special effects that earned oohs
and aahs in the early '80s, but failed to titillate '90s kids.
"In the old pavilion, the action occurred around you, not to you,"
Guarascio said. "The new pavilion will be a unique experience that immerses
participants almost literally...in how we test trucks."
World of Motion should be a hit with GM employees, although they don't
get a discount on Epcot's admission prices of $39 for adults and $32 for
children. But will it captivate car-indifferent people and be worth Epcot's
hefty prices?
Definitely, Guarascio said.
He dismissed doomsayers who compare World of Motion to Auto World, the
much-maligned Flint theme park that closed in 1985.
"There's no guesswork involved in World of Motion," Guarascio said. "In
addition to being a unique display with tremendous appeal, its location is
solid."
Besides, up to 20 million people visit Disney's Epcot Center each year.
Flint draws considerably fewer tourists.

I have a quick question that hopefully someone knows the answer
to - when staying at an Epcot resort and exercising early entry
privileges, the guide books say that internal Epcot busses shuttle
you from the International Gateway to Future World. Specifically,
are you bussed to the main Epcot entrance or to the "entrance" to
Future World from the World Showcase?
Thanks in advance,
Carol

| I just got back from WDW. We stayed at Caribbean Beach Resort which is
considered an EPCOT resort. When we took the bus to EPCOT, it let us
off just outside the entrande to the EPCOT. The first part of the park
you go to is Future World. Does that answer your question?

I don't really think so...I'm referring to those EPCOT resorts that
are a short walk, tram, or boat ride from the International Gateway
entrance (near the UK?) i.e. Yacht/Beach Clubs, Boardwalk Inn/Villas,
and Dolphin/Swan. These resorts do not have bus transportation to
EPCOT.

Carol, the Epcot shuttle bus is one of those "double decker" buses.
It is parked a short walk from the Turnstyle. It drops you off right
past Canada. you could walk as fast as it takes for the bus.

Julie, I think I might be getting this now. On early entry days
(or other days for that matter), I can catch whatever is the
transportation (or walk?) from the Boardwalk to the International
Gateway. World Showcase will not be open at this time - are you
saying that I can still walk through it to get to the Future World
attractions that are open? I read the guidebooks to mean that
you *had* to take a bus to Future World. So, I actually go through
a ticket gate or whatever at the World Showcase entrance?
The reason I ask is because I was thinking about following
a loose touring plan and thought if I entered from the
WS it might make sense to start at the Imagination attractions.
Can you tell I'll be a first-timer? 8^)

| re: .238
What Julie said is what used to happen. For the summer only
(supposedly), the double-decker buses are not in service. So, if you
want to go to Epcot in the mornings (before 11 am) from Y/B, S/D, or
BW, you will have to hoof it from the International Gateway to
Future World.
One morning I walked from the BoardWalk to the Wonders of Life at
10 am in 95 degree heat. It was a killer. Even from the boat dock,
it's a long, hot walk. My complaints have been duly noted at the
BoardWalk.

The hours posted for Oct - Dec. 1996 are much less inconvenient than they
were during my Aug. 29-Sept. 3 trip and on my trip last October - on both
those trips, Future World was open 9 am - 7 pm and World Showcase was open
11 am - 9 pm. I really hated it that Future World closed at 7:00!! (The later
opening of World Showcase didn't bother me that much.) Glad to see Future World
will be open as late as World Showcase in the next 3 months (and beyond?).
Figures they changed the hours *after* my trip! :-)
By the way, Horizons has reopened. I couldn't tell whether there were any
changes in the ride (been a long time since my previous time on it).
Also, the "test track" on the outside of World of Motion is now encircling the
building and seems to extend some way in the back (was hard to see).

I didn't see or hear any information about it one way or the other. Maybe

I don't think too many people like the new hours.

11.245 | Keep Those Cards and Letters Coming | DONVAN::SCOPA | | Thu Sep 12 1996 17:08 | 19 |
| Y'know Doug they probably did it for two reasons:
- EPCOT guest numbers are low early/late in the day
- Staggering CM hours saves on overhead.
The crowds over the next 15 months may make it necessary for them to
rethink the Epcot hours...I hope so.
Being an early bird I prefer both FW and WS to be open early....having
them both open until late would be better than the present hours.
Mike
P.S. Everytime I communicate with anyone down in Orlando (CMs) I
usually mention this inconvenience...hopefully the word will
get to management....it took time....just like it did to get
"Sorcery" back in MGM.

A castmember who has actually ridden Test Track says the attraction is
"wonderful" but the cars keep breaking down. The imagineers will be
working overtime to figure out a way to keep the attraction from
breaking down before it is open to the public.
I'll keep everyone posted. Those going down for the April school
vacation week may have a shot at a soft opening or two.
Castmembers are usually testing attractions a bout a month before they
are open to the public. I know the TZTOT had an extended test period
due to the nature of the ride...the same may hold for Test Track. The
word from Orlando indicates that Test Track may open sometime between
mid-May and mid-June.

11.253 | Test Track Rumor...Opening in November??? | DONVAN::SCOPA | | Tue Apr 15 1997 14:32 | 12 |
| Rumor circulating that Test Track will not officially open until
November. There may be some soft openings from time to time.
The feeling is that the cars have to be retrofitted somehow to
withstand the rigors of the ride.
The soft openings will limit the runs the cars have to make.
I'm not putting much stock in this rumor...there's been too much
publicity on this attraction to let it slip that far.

11.254 | Latest On Test Track | DONVAN::SCOPA | | Tue Apr 29 1997 13:50 | 91 |
| This was recently posted in the rec.arts.disney newsgroup. It's the
latest on Test Track.
************
Greetings all--
There are three ride vehicles rolling around inside the structure of
the upcoming thrill ride, but they're having a bit of a problem staying on
the right track. So to speak.
What began as another spin-off attraction for Tony Baxter's versatile
Enhanced Motion Vehicle has turned into the first set-back for what was
originally perceived to be the Omnimover of the 21st Century.
The EMV, introduced to Humankind in Disneyland's Indiana Jones and the
Temple of the Forbidden Eye attraction, was a genius stroke and a
feather in the cap for the man who had redefined a new generation of Disney
thrills with Big Thunder Mountain. With onboard computers that could in
turn interact with a larger computer control system--the possibility to
reprogram the vehicles simply and quickly became a factor in quick
turn-around for the development of such ambitious projects as Countdown
To Extinction and Journey To The Center of the Earth. But where those
rides primarily give the illusion of speed and daredevil exploits--GM Test
Track actually passes those boundaries by pure physical nature alone.
It was decided early on to abandon the EMV design. One problem was in
the construction of a buss-bar that extended down below the ride track and
connected to another series of controls. The Indy troop transports,
infamous for hydraulic spills that required copious amounts of down-time,
were a prime key in the re-design. Flower Street Imagineers began
running a prototype vehicle around a slotted track and even built a
full-bodied buggy that was run off-course to test suspension and handling.
With GM as a sponsor, who better to talk with about creating a vehicle to
withstand the rigors of the experience?
This put them only slightly behind schedule.
It was when the first test cycling began with the approved vehicle
design that problems developed; cars were run at a low speed at first, which
was fine. Then higher speeds increased e-stop errors. Speculation is all
that I can offer about the exact cause of the errors. It's been thought
that the severe angle of the banking could be causing a fault in alignment
as the cars round the 318-foot diameter radius curve. This is where the
majority of the e-stops are happening. As it stands, only four of the
29 cars are in operation now as the rest undergo re-configuration.
This wouldn't be the first time that a major "E" ticket got held up due
to conveyance problems.
When Disney aimed to open the world's largest flume ride in 1988, they
ended up missing their opening day by a few months, thanks to the sizes
of logs.
Splash Mountain had a hideous discrepancy that resulted in logs that
were too long and resulted in logjams around the tight curves of the
eight-minute long ride. Instead of re-designing the ornate logs,
however--the Imagineers were told to restructure the flume. A move
that was later regretted when those logs were tossed out for capacity
reasons.
With matters of ride transport still on the drawing boards, the word is
that Test Track won't bow until November of '97--with possible soft
opening activity in mid-September.
Doh!
Well, for those who are starved for a new coaster-type thrill in
Orlando, there's always the brand-new Windstorm roller-coaster, a
compact steel white-knuckler at Old Town on 192 near Celebration.
On the Big Thunder Scale of 1-5, 1 being Gadget's Go-Coaster and 5 being
Space Mountain (Florida) on a greasy day--the Windstorm gets a 6. Go get
your head banged.

Track is still having problems with the vehicles and that he heard
"...the soft opening is pushed back to at least July, maybe later."
Things happen in threes...I was there in '92 for the soft opening of

....one more theme park to go....EPCOT in '97 for Test Track.
Here's a promise that if I do get to try it out I will go over to
Innoventions and send mail to someone to post my impressions of the
attraction.

11.259 | The Saga of Test Track | DONVAN::SCOPA | | Tue May 13 1997 11:28 | 24 |
| Because of the large number of noters going in the next several months
I continue to monitor the Test Track saga.
Here is some text from someone who recently posted an update in r.a.d.:
"Well, not to completely ruin your hopes, but, the information is
completely right. Just call Epcot Guest Relations and ask. An
opening date has not been determinded yet, and rest assured, there is no
chance of it opening to the public any time this month (May).
I have a friend in Epcot Park Management and his optimistic view is that
it will be open by early July. Others at WDW are not as optimistic.
But rest assured, castmembers don't even know when they'll be able to
test ride the Test Track. Epcot has erased the "Opening Spring of 1997"
on the green walls near the attraction. And if that doesn't put
the nail in the coffin on the rumored May 13th opening, just wait
until May 13th and that will."
And so the saga continues...

We were really REALLY disappointed with Illuminations 25.
The show we saw this May was vastly inferior to the show we
saw in Fall of '92. Last time we walked over from the Yacht
and Beach to watch it most every night. This year we planned
to do it from the Boardwalk.
I wish I could describe the look of disgust on my wife's face
when I-25 ended the first (and last time) we went to see it.
The "What the heck was *THAT*?" look was almost comical! She
took it harder than I did (I've never been a big fireworks
fan)....
I'm not surprised there have been complaints.
