524.0. "Tax-deductible cruises?" by STARCH::jmonia.shr.dec.com::monia (Charles Monia, SHR3-2/W3, 237-6757) Sun Apr 16 1995 15:08

Hi:

Has anyone heard of cruises combined with professional seminars, such
as personal financial management?

I've been told by a tax accountant that the expenses for these trips
are deductible provided certain criteria are met. According to the
accountant, some of these are:

1. Cost of trip greater than 2% of gross income.

2. Careful documentation, including proof of attendance at all
   sessions (notes, attendance records).

The accountant said that such sessions might run from 8am to 2pm,
which would leave much of the day open for other activities.

Considering the above, it seems to me this is worth
further investigation.

I believe that it is nearly impossible now to hold
professional seminars outside the US, which are deductible.
Based on an article I read, the same test applies to cruises.
So if you want to try this, you'd only stand a prayer on
    a US-flagged ship.

And, there aren't many of those. American Hawaii, and
riverboats are the only ones I know of.

Personally, I think it would be easier just to send a letter
to Margaret Milner Richardson, begging to be audited.

Do you recall the source of the article?

Don't know about that, my B-I-L has a dental convention in Bermuda
in a week, and it's definitely tax deductible.
