522.0. "Worldmark Tours" by WMOIS::JETTE () Mon Mar 13 1995 13:41

Has anyone ever heard of Worldmark Tours out of Florida? I received
a voucher in the mail telling me I am authorized to receive a 6 day, 5
night vacation from Ft. Lauderdale cruise on the Sea Escape to Grand
Bahama Island, back to Orlando or Ft. lauderdale for a couple of days,
and complimentary car rental. Now, I don't know if this is all
supposed to be FREE, but, whatever, sounds to good to be true to me.
I have been calling the 800-number all morning and it has been busy,
    busy, busy.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Carol

There are several one day cruises that run from Miami, Ft.
Lauderdale and West Palm Beach to the Bahamas (and back).
Sea Escape, Discovery, and Crown Cruise lines are among
the operators. The ships tend to be small, crowded and
    old.

I wouldn't think of these as 'cruises', but I guess some
folks might. They're more like ferries. You take the ship
to Freeport, spend the day there, and take the ship back.
It's about 50 nm (from Ft. Lauderdale) each way. The fares
range from $29 to ~$80 depending on the season, and the day
of the week. You do not typically have a stateroom, for the
    base price, it's additional.

In these packages, you take the ship there, stay in some
hotel, and then take the ship back.

These things seem to be sold by everyone, sort of like the
'college student selling magazines'. If you really want
to do this, I'd suggest trying out one of the one day cruises
when you happen to be in Florida. Then you're only out $29.

If you want to take a 'real', there are lots of 3/4 day
cruises on well-known cruise lines, out of Miami and Port
    Canaveral.

I wasn't palnning a trip to Florida! I just received this
voucher/certificate in the mail unsolicited. They are making it seems
as though I was one of a few select people chosen to go on this trip.
I still can get through on the 1-800 number--always busy. I am
ssuming this is supposed to be a free trip, but maybe they will expect
some money, but tell me aI am getting this terrific deal for the low,
    low price of $blah, $blah, $blah!!!!!!!!!!

rec.travel.cruises is full of information about this. It's not a
scam or rip off but you can do the same deal yourself for less money and
a lot better hotel. The boat is just a taxi from Florida to the Bahamas and
the hotel from what I'm told is a very low class one. You can do MUCH MUCH
better by using the money to book your own hotel and such.

Thanks! I kind of thought something like that. If I'm going to book
a cruise, it wouldn't be to go to the Bahamas, that's for sure. I
thought if this was a freebie, well, then of course, I'd do it. No
such thing as a freebie these days! Knew it was too good to be true!
