They just go around them. Storms usually move pretty slow compared
with a ship doing 25mph in the opposite direction. We were on one cruise when
a storm was coming in. We skipped our next port and spent the day at sea and
there wasn't a cloud in the sky ! You could tell the captain was beating feet
at night. The whole ship would vibrate just a little when the throttle was wide
open.

I hope Gordon and his effects are all done by this weekend. I'll be cruising on
the Norway in the Eastern Caribean...I also hope there aren't any more waiting
in the wings...

I'm sure everything will be fine. If anything, you may have a
bumpy flight. We've been on 6 cruises and I always wish there would be
one day where it's rough just to experience it !
Have fun on your cruise !

My wife and I have been on three cruises together and the worst weather we
encountered was a day with relatively high winds. From inside the ship I was
looking out the window and the horizon was crooked (it was real, I hadn't been
drinking). It sort of made me want to go over and try to turn the window to
straighten it out like a framed picture that wasn't hung straight. So we went
outside and found that the ship (the Noordam, BTW) was listing to one side. I
couldn't figure out why until I went to the "high" side of the ship and got
blasted by the wind. It was kind of neat actually (once we figured out that we
weren't in any danger) felt kind of like a touch of adventure on the high seas.
Fortunately it was just windy, the seas weren't really rough or anything. I
can't even imagine what a hurricane in the open ocean must be like.
The storm is breaking up by the way, so it looks like there will be no
"adventures" this time around (unless another one comes around).

511.5 | Bay of Biscay | AYOV10::KKEARY | | Wed Dec 14 1994 07:50 | 17 |
| I was on the Canberra for Xmas and New Year last year in the Med.
Crossing the Bay of Biscay was really stormy with one in three people
requiring an injection for sea sickness at the hospital. Both myself
and my husband enjoyed every minute of it.
At its worst you had to hang onto the hand rails when walking about and
you could not go out on deck for half a day as the waves were coming
right up.
The worst night our wardrobe doors kept swinging open and I was
literally hanging onto the edge of the bed as I felt I was going to
fall out every time the ship rocked.
It was an experience I will never forget and am just thankful that I
enjoyed it and was not ill through it.

| I've never been in a real storm at sea but have experienced a
couple of times that the weather made dancing a whole new experience.
Please wish me fair skies and calm seas as I'm leaving monday for a
Holiday cruise.

You had better hope your "rack" (bed) is very close to the ship's center
of bouyancy as that's the point about which the ship will rock (like being
seated right over the wings of an airplane.) The COB should be amid-ships, at or
below the waterline. At least that way YOU can minimize how violently you're
being tossed around. I pity the poor people in the bow, in the stern, or in the
upper-most decks. It might be interesting to experience for a couple hours, but
believe me when you've decided you've had enough, too bad 'cause there's
nothing you can do to stop it. Think of it as a 2 day rollercoaster ride with
no opportunity to get off. No thanks...

I get sick almost everytime out on the fishing boats. It somes with the
territory.
