Extended family members are trying to coerce my husband and I to taking a seven day Carribean cruise with them next February. We have cruised before and loved it but that was prior to two kids. If we went, we'd want to take our children. Crazy perhaps? They would only be 3 1/2 and 1 1/2. Are we out of our minds? What ships would you recommend?

We took our daughter just before she turned 3 on the Disney Cruise. They really had nice programs for the kids but she was just a little too young to stay with the program without us. Basically she was with us all the time. I would say your 3 1/2 year old might be old enough but the 1 1/2 year old will be with you all the time anyway. Because of the young age there is not that big of advantage to a cruise with a stronger kids program. These programs can work really well with kids 4 and up and some a little younger. If you do consider a cruise pay attention to the extra cost for the two kids. Some cruise lines have very high add on prices for kids and others are more reasonable, basically some discourage kids by make the extra cost high. So what might be a great deal for the other members of the party may be lousy for you. A standard cabin with two extra bunks above is not my idea of a great time with two little ones. It will be very busy in there all the time. You could probably have a pretty good time but it is likely to be very expensive and will be nothing like your cruises before. We only took our daughter once in 88 when 3, all of our other cruises have been with her staying home with relatives or a close friend who she liked a lot. She ends up having as much fun being home with another family than going on a cruise. At 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 there is no value added to a kid to being on a ship except being with mom and dad. Quite frankly I was nervous with my 3 year old because there are places on ships where the railings have large gaps and maybe I worried too much but I was afraid of my kid falling through and overboard. My husband and I took our son who at the time was 3 1/2 on a cruise to the Western Carribean last year on RCCL's Majesty of the Sea's. RCCL charged us half of what we paid for my son. He had a great time and we kept him with us most of the time as he was still a little to young to go off with the kids group they had. Most ships do offer babysitting services at night so you and your husband can go off to a show or to the casino or disco. My son also like visiting the different ports and found them intersting. He still talks about it to this day. The Disney cruise on the Big Red Boat is also nice and more geared towards kids, even tho RCCL does have things for the kids to do. I would suggest checking in with your travel agent to see what cruise lines are good for kids. That is what my husband and I did and we decided to go with RCCL mainly becasue my husband didn't want to spend his whole cruise with Disney charecters. Liz |
