468.0. "Trip Report: Sovereign Of The Seas" by NAPIER::HAGEN (Please send truffles!) Wed Sep 08 1993 10:53
My husband and I went on our first cruise on RCCL's Sovereign of the Seas
Aug. 28 - Sept. 4, 1993. We had early seating for the dining room.
Sat. Aug. 28
------------
Our Delta flight was packed. I've flown on alot of airlines but this was my
first time with Delta and I was NOT impressed. The food was terrible. After
arriving in Ft. Lauderdale, we were herded by RCCL staff onto a bus to Miami.
It was air-conditioned but only had about 4 inches of leg room. We boraded the
Sovereign at 1:45. Snap! The first of many pictures taken of us by the ship's
photographers. We found our cabin and then got into a LONG line for our Super
Charge. After that we're starving, not having had lunch yet so around 2:30 we
head for the Windjammer Cafe for lunch. Ouch! A can of Coke cost $1.50! Then
we went to a presentation in the Follies on the ship's services. OUCH! A can
of Coke delivered by a bar waiter costs $1.82 with tax and tip! The presenta-
tion was boring so we left and walked around the ship. Went back to our cabin
at 4:00 and our luggage was there! After unpacking we had our life boat drill.
Then we left Miami in a rain storm, so we couldn't use streamers. We had dinner
in the Kismet dining room and sat at a table for ten. Our waiter was named
Tony and he was great. Gee, no chocolate desserts on the menu; what kind of
ship is this??? We both odered sirloin, and had lemon sherbet for dessert.
After dinner we went to the show - a comedian who was just awful. I think his
name was Jimmy Wallis.
Sun. Aug. 29
------------
After some early morning danish on the pool deck, we had breakfast in the dining
room. After Mass, we went to the talk in the Follies on the island tours.
(One piece of advice, unless you have questions, skip these ship talks in the
Follies because they video tape them and then show them all day long, all week
long, on the TV in your cabin.) The library opened at 10:00, but the talk
didn't end until 10:45. A dash to the library afterwards only to find out all
four books we were interested in checking out (John Grisham books) were gone! So
we bought some paperbacks in the gift shop. We sat by the pool, had burgers
for lunch at the WJ, then watched the horse races. Tonight was the Captain's
cocktail party and everyone got dressed up. About 75% of the women wore sequins
but hardly any men in tuxes. Snap! A picture of us shaking the captain's hand.
Snap! A picture of us having a drink. Then on to dinner - it was French night.
We had roast sirloin with truffle sauce and poached salmon, and stawberry
mousse cake and chocolate souffle for dessert. After dinner we waited in line
to have our portraits taken. Then saw the show "Caribbean Fantasy" - this was
my favorite show on the cruise and I wish I had brought my camera. Then we
went dancing in the Music Man Lounge to "Vicky and the Holding Company". We
walked along deck but it was very windy, so we went to the Oriental midnight
buffet.
Mon. Aug.30
-----------
Slept late and barely made it to breakfast. (We liked having breakfast in the
dining room and did so every day, although only about 30% of the passengers
opted to do so.) After spending the morning at the pool, we had lunch in the
dining room and caught a movie "Dave". Then we went to afternoon tea, which is
really small sandwiches, cookies, and make-your-own-sundaes in the WJ cafe.
Dinner was semi-formal and was Italian. This was our favorite dinner of the
week. We ordered beef tenderloin with pizza sauce, basil, garlic, and olives;
and shrimp scampi. For dessert we had swan chantilly which was swan-shaped cream
puffs. The waiters wore Italian costumes and sang Italian songs. Snap! More
pictures in the dining room. After dinner we went to the Beatlemania show (by
"Rain") which was very good.
Tues. Aug. 31
-------------
We docked at St. Thomas. After an early breakfast we went ashore - snap!
another picture getting off the ship - and phoned our boys. (To phone from the
ship cost $15.00 per minute.) We had the island tour, traveling with about 10
others in a van to various lookout points (and photo ops) on the island, stop-
ping at Drake's Seat, Mountain Top, and Blue Beard's castle (really just the
tower is left and is used as the honeymoon suite of a hotel, so you can't go up
in it.) We were thinking of renting a car instead of doing the tour but were
glad we didn't. The roads were narrow and twisting and not well marked. My
husband was feeling motion sickness in the van because of the roads. After the
tour we went back to the ship for a buffet lunch, and then shopped at the
stores by the dock. We left St. Thomas at 5:30, and altho it was sunny all day
and sunny all around us, a passing cloud dumped on us as we pulled out, so we
couldn't video tape. For dinner it was Caribbean night (and informal). We
both ordered marinated tenderloin over rice. We had a 25th anniversary couple
at our table, AND a birthday girl, so the head waiter brought cakes over for
both and the waiters sang happy anniversary/birthday. Later all the waiters
and bus boys sang and danced carrying flaming desserts (Flaming Bubaloo) on
their heads. After dinner we went to a movie and saw "Indecent Proposal". We
were told that ALOT of it had been cut. (The version we saw could have been
rated G.) We pulled into San Juan late, around 10:45 p.m. We were supposed to
arrive at 10:00 and the nightclub shows had to be held until the passengers who
signed up for them could arrive. Later we went to the Italian midnight buffet.
Wed. Sept. 1
------------
Went ashore and called home. Then had breakfast. We didn't sign up for any
tours because we spent a week in San Juan a few years ago and saw most of it.
The only thing we missed was the other fort, San Cristobal. This was about a
mile from the ship so we walked there (all uphill!) and toured it. The tour
guide wouldn't give tours to people who were part of another tour, because the
fort's tour took 1/2 hour, and people who were part of San Juan tours usually
only had 20 minutes to spend at the fort. We got to access locked areas,
underground tunnels. It was interesting. Coming back on ship they tried to
snap our pictures but we told them NO! Then we had a buffet lunch on ship,
which left at 2:00 p.m. We both took naps after lunch. Before dinner we
viewed the movie "An Inside Look" which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the
ship. Dinner was informal, and Spanish night. After dinner - Snap, another
picture of us leaving the dining room, with a costumed crew member dressed as
a pirate - we went to the show "Bedazzle" which was good, but not as good as
"Caribbean Fantasy". We went to the Masquerade Ball (we didn't dress up). It
was hilarious! Then to the pool deck for the Caribbean Market midnight buffet.
It was fun with everyone joining in a big conga line dancing around the pools.
Thu. Sept. 2
------------
After breakfast, we did our usual pool routine of doing laps then sunning all
morning. For lunch we had burgers at the WJ cafe. After lunch we slept for
3 hours! Then we watched the passenger talent show. Most were singers and most
couldn't sing. Everyone got a first prize medal though. Dinner was the
Captain's Gala, which was formal. We both ordered filet mignon and for dessert
had pineapple marangue pie and black forest cake. Snap! Another picture of
us at dinner. After dinner - snap! another picture of us leaving the dining
room - we went to the show, where the Four Aces performed. (I'm too young to
enjoy them much ;-) Then we went to the Gala Buffet at 11:30 for picture
taking, and met the head chef. At 12:30 we got to eat at the Gala Buffet.
This is really spectacular.
Fri. Sept. 3
------------
I got up at 5:30 to take pictures and film the sunrise. After breakfast we
swam and sunned (and I slept!). Because of engine trouble we would be late
getting to CocoCay, so we had a buffet lunch in the dining room instead of the
planned barbeque on the island. Each person who signed up for snorkeling got
a $10 refund. We were on the 3rd tender to the island and got there around
1:30. We snorkeled for the first time and really enjoyed it - lots of beautiful
fish and coral to look at. They even have a sunken pirates ship and airplane
(RCCL built them to attract fish) to look at. Watch out for the little jelly
fish - they sting. It was very hot and sunny on the island, but it rained hard
for about 10 minutes while we snorkeled. We didn't have much time on the island
because we had to get back to the ship by 5:00. Dinner was informal and it was
American night. Tony, our waiter, brought me two chocolate mousses for dessert
because I told him I was waiting for it all week! My husband got the baked
Alaska. We handed out tips to the waiters and bus boy after dinner. (We left
our tip for our cabin steward in our room which he also got this night.) After
dinner we went to the show, and the crew (cruise directors) performed. It was
hilarious. Then we went back to our cabin, packed our suitcases, and put them
outside our door. After a final walk on deck under a starry sky, we turned in
(our bags were already gone by the time we got back to our cabin.)
Sun. Sept.4
-----------
Got up at 5:30 and went on deck. We pulled into Miami at 6:30 just as the sun
was rising. We had breakfast (everyone showed up in the dining room today) and
said good-bye to everyone, then back to our cabin to read until they called us
to disembark.
The trip ended on a slightly negative note as disembarking was not fun. Hoards
of people pusing to get off the ship. Searching, along with hundreds of other
people, amongst thousands of pieces of luggage for our two bags. Having to lug
them to the end of the pier to check them with Delta, then waiting in the HOT
sun for about 20 minutes to pack on to a bus for Ft. Lauderdale. We got to the
airport 2.5 hours before our flight left. We ate lunch at the airport and were
glad we did since the lunch served by Delta looked awful. Our flight was packed
but uneventful, and on-time.
Notes
-----
1. I wish be brought binoculars to look at passing ships and islands with.
2. I'm glad it was suggested in this notesfile to bring along some cans of Coke.
At night you can only get them in the lounges and bars.
3. I wish I skipped all the ship's presentations since they were showed all the
time on TV anyways. (I could have watched them at MY convenience, without
the thousands of people crammed into the Follies.)
4. The ship's photographers really got annoying after awhile. But they're there
to make money, charging $5.95 for each snapshot you buy (5x7) and $19.95
for each formal portrait (8x10) you buy. We bought a few but not many since
the quality was fairly poor on most of them (washed out or grainy).
5. The captain (Captain Erikson) was really funny and entertaining when he gave
a speech. Our cruise director (Paul Rutter) was also very funny and enter-
taining.
6. You could barely feel the ship's motion. My husband was a little worried
about getting sea-sick, since he's prone to motion sickness, but he had no
trouble at all. At night in bed you can feel a very gentle rocking which
made for a great night's sleep.

| Just a general reply. Your description of crowded flight down and
disembarkation is accurate for normal cases. I know that it is really
not much fun. I do not consider the first and last day of a cruise
or any vacation as vacation. It is strictly travel time.
Believe it or not, I've been on other cruises and RCCL's handling is
as good or better than any other cruise line. If you take an air sea
package then don't expect too much.
Try going through Jamaica for a cruise, your will then consider
what you went through as paradise in comparison.
Almost all flights going to Miami for 7 day cruises are full from
Boston. If you want, you can take your $250 credit for cruise
and arrange your own. That also means you will have handle your own
luggage to the ship. Since any other flight will probably be full also,
you will have to go first class. Figure $1600 per person for round
trip first class plus taxi plus porter etc. If you really have money
to blow then it would be better, myself I will live with the short
trip in crowded seats and take the $3,000 I save and use it for another
cruise.
I know the whole process of getting too and from a ship for cruise
is not that much fun, but if you think that others are better than
RCCL then you are in for a rude suprise. The only way around it is
to completely handle all your own travel, this will however almost
always cost you a lot more than the air/sea credit provides for
any cruise line.
Just a note, the air/sea program for any cruise line is normally
the area with the highest levels of complaints. It is a basic problem
of needing to provide the service and also keep the costs down.
I agree with entertainment. Some is good, some awful, true of most
lines. Usually on a large ship the cruise staff has a lot of talent
and can put on excellent shows. The trouble is the lines like to
bring in big names to brag about. Typically it is someone who was big
a long time ago. Example we had Jerry Lewis one time, his stand up
act has to be one of the worst ever !!! absolutely awful. A lot of
times the entertainment ends up being slanted to older members or
some specific segment. We went on the SS Norway of NCL years before
and their entertainment was supposed to be the best, I thought it
was awful. The best entertainment that I enjoyed was on Song of
AMerica because the cruise staff did most of it and they were good.
The did not bother bringing in big name has beens.
We are going on Sovereign again in JAN, 94. We mainly like the 3 days
at sea and just relax, the agressive discount deals were also the
main reason. I am hoping that Haiti settles down and the reopen
Labadee before our cruise, Coco Cay is a pretty nice island but
not nearly as nice as Labadee. I want to try Majesty or Monarch but I
will not pay a lot more for same date.
On ship's motion the Sovereign is very large and usually very stable
as your described, but if you hit one of the more severe weather
fronts it will definitely rock and roll plenty enough to get people
sick. ON our last cruise on Sovereign we had pretty good weather, the
week before they hit a storm and one evening it was so bad that only
about 30% made it to dinner, they were all too sick. The larger ships
are much more stable but than can rock if the weather is more
severe.
Overall I found your description of the cruise to be very accurate
from my experience. My basic definition of cruises as vacations is,
take the number of nights and subtract 1 and that is the vacation
part. The rest is not fun. Example 7 night Sat to Sat cruise.
Sun to Fri is the good part, both Saturdays are the bad part needed
to get to the good part, that is one reason I stay away from 3/4
night cruises.

Whoa, there. It's quite a jump from the air package is bad
to $1600 per-person is your only alternative. If you're
planning in advance, you can get air prices that are
competitive with the $250 credit.
I've been so screwed by RCCL on their air, that's it's worth
a few dollars to me to make my own arrangements.
RCCL once flew us back from Acapulco -- the boat docked at
8:00AM Sunday, we got back to Manchester at 3:30PM Monday.
Part of this was in a packed '27 charter with what must have
been 8" seat pitch. I could have made better bus
connections. RCCL must think people are idiots; that somehow
if the cruise is OK, people will ignore the rest. To
paraphrase the old joke, other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how
was the cruise?
I far prefer to make my own air arrangements. This let's me
choose the dates and times that I want to travel, and let's
me fly out of Manchester, rather than Boston. (I can defray
some extra cost just with the savings on airport parking. I
can also choose a preferred airline for frequent flier
mileage.)
As you mentioned, you write off the travel days as not being
really vacation. To me, if I can change things enough that
I don't have to write off two travel days, that's worth a few
dollars.
With regard to the base note, I too find RCCL's photography
offensive. You're the customer, they should be doing things
for you. They should try asking 'may I take your picture',
instead of forcing themselves on you -- I,'m taking your
picture whether you like it or not, because it's a profit
center for RCCL.
Few things are more annoying that waiting in a line to get
off the boat in some port, only to find out that the line is
caused by the photographer stopping everyone to take their
picture. If some people want this, that's fine, but where
is the express lane for this customer? I just tell them
I'm in the witness protection program, and I can't have my
picture taken.
Whenever I hear their commercials with the tag line
'you have some royal Caribbean coming', I always wonder
if I have to bend over for it.

| The reason I gave the $1600 figure was it is first class. It is
normally either first class or cattle class, period, with some
exceptions. anything you can get close to $250 is going to have
the same poor seating and probably the same bad food. Unless you
go at a strange time of day you will end up with a full plane.
With all the cruises going out on the weekend and other travelers
the plane is going to be full, at least out of Boston.
To beat the credit of $250 means the round trip airfare has to be
about $240 per person. Anytime I've gone the cheapest available were
non refundable super savers at about $300+ round trip. Of course
there are specials down to $200 but not always. Almost all low end
fares are not refundable, if you book in advance and then get airfare
in advance then you are stuck if something happens to plans.
When done as air/sea then you just have a deposit up to 60 days
ahead and it is all fully refundable. The biggest advantage to doing
your own is controlling the schedule, I think this would be more
important for departures down in the Caribbean. Everytime I've gone
to Miami with RCCL I've always got very good times and always non
stop. I would agree that making your own arrangements from a smaller
airport like Manchester would be a good idea, but from Boston
you usually do no better unless you spend money.
If you do your own then you have to get your luggage to the ship.
RCCL's automatic handling of luggage from plane directly to ship
is very nice. I cannot believe anyone would think finding your
luggage and then dragging it to a taxi or the bus, then drag it
on ship after getting to port would be
better than not having to worry about it at all. I've been
on the buses many times, I am 5'11' and there sure is no extra space
but once seated I was always comfortable. A cab would provide more
space but then you would have all that extra handling of the luggage.
I fully agree about the photographers, it really makes you mad when
you walk off at a port and release the reason the line moved so
slowly was due their picture taking.
On return the option of checking in baggage at the truck at the terminal
should not be thought as something bad, it is really a nice feature.
The alternative is drag it to bus/cab, go to airport, drag it more
and check in. The only disadvantage to checking in at truck at port
on return is it is only available for the airlines with a lot of
passengers on the ship. The only way to get out of not dragging
your luggage at all is to get a porter which there are usually plenty
of.
If you setup your own flight then do not get cute and time it
to late in afternoon on departure date, try to get there early or
maybe the day before. If your flight is delayed beyond the time
needed to get to ship then you better hope there are air/sea passengers
for your cruise on that flight. The ships will typically delay
departure when a flight is late with air/sea passaengers. Even
if the ship had to leave I would bet these passengers would get
overnight accommadations and a flight to first port. If you do
your own and miss the ship then you will certainly pick up
all costs and have to make your own arrangements to get to
the first port. Either way you miss at least 1 day or more of cruise.
I've gone down the day before one time and did not like it much.
You end up traveling, going to hotel, checking in etc. Usually
not much to do, then next day get up, get to ship etc. Ok I guess
but nothing great.
There has not been a time that I've gone on a RCCL cruise
(all were out of Miami from Boston) that I could have done any better
on the travel arrangements myself. No matter how you get there the
good part of the cruise doesn't start till after the lifeboat drill,
in my opinion.
I agree that if coming from a small airport then try your own
arrangements even if the costs are a little higher. If going
on a cruise out of Jamaica then I would definitely do it.
If going out of Boston then you will probably do no better for
arrangements, spend more money and then do all the leg work
with luggage. I looked into it a few times, each time I did the
cost of making my own arrangements added up to $200 to $300 more
than if I used air/sea. None of the arrangements I could have
made would have been better either, and no luggage handling.
One cruise magazine had the right idea, if cruise lines would
actually give a credit for the actual amount for air/transfers which
would normally be greater than the credit, then more people
would make their own arrangements and be happier.
Another trick recently has made it harder to do your own in some
cases. The normal credit is $250, but on some of the best specials
from RCCL and some others the special is cruise only at very low price
with air/sea added on for only $99 per person. At that point you may
have to spend $500 more just to do your own arrangements. I believe the
reason the air/sea is so cheap is this allows them to offer
low price cruises on difficult dates and not have to refund
some money to people who booked a long way in advance with guaranteed
lowest fares. THe guarantee is on cruise only, with the $99 air/sea
the reality is the $99 comes from the cruise only to bypass
the guarantee, kind of cute, hah!
The $1.50 cokes and higher prices for everything else is one
way the cruise lines are making up for the holding line on basic
cruise prices. I still cannot complain, my first cruise was in 1985,
the cabin stunk (2 verticle bunks), the cost was $2600, the
air/sea program at that time by NCL on SS Norway was really bad, not
anywhere as nice as RCCL, whereas my last few cruises I've had
nicer cabins, much better air/sea program, etc., 10 years later and
I've spent $2000 to $2200 instead (all prices for 2).
From these notes I have two suggestions.
1) Get your self a really bright and unique label for luggage, it
will make it easier to find in the area before going through
customs.
2) If a bunch of people complained about the photographers holding
up people then maybe the cruise lines would control them better. This
problem is not unique to RCCL, they all do it.
Even though I cannot control all negative aspects of my cruise or
any vacation that is, I am still looking forward to cruise number 9
in Jan 94.
