| Mary,
I took the Alaskan Cruise at the same time of year 5 years ago. I took
layerable items, and discovered that for the most part, I was able to
wear short sleeved blouses and slacks and be comfortable most days.
The only time I really needed a heavy jacket was the day we sailed
Glacier Bay. It does get quite cold there. I'd suggest packing a warm
jacket for that day, and maybe a sweatshirt just in case you need
something a little lighter than the jacket, but more than just
shirt-sleeves.
The ship I was on was not one of the large cruise-lines; 500
passengers, and not a "glitzy" ship. Everyone did tend to dress for
dinner, which means dresses or dressy pantsuits for the women and at
least sports coats and ties for the men. We had two "really dressy"
nights - Captain's welcoming party and the Farewell Party - and
everyone really dressed up for these --- which really made it fun.
General attire on the ship though was slacks - be comfortable. We were
in a port 9 or 10 days of our 14 day trip so dressed for excursions and
sightseeing.
Have a ball --- take lots of film, and if you get the chance to go to
the salmon bake while in Juneau, definitely take advantage of it. You
fly out in seaplanes over the glaciers behind Juneau to the Taku Lodge
which is on the Taku River facing one of the active, advancing glaciers
in Alaska. They BBQ salmon steaks outside and it's wonderful (and this
is from someone who isn't real fond of fish!) Definitely worth the
price!

If you took the helicopter ride over the Glacier...was it worth
the price and approx. how much is it?

Yes, we took the helicopter ride to the glacier from Juneau. They actually
LAND on the glacier and you get to get out and walk around on it for about
half an hour. Then the helicopter returns and you fly over the glacier fields.
(Actually, I think on some trips they do it in reverse order, i.e., fly over
the glacier fields and then land on the glacier.)
It was awesome! If I remember correctly, it cost around $125-$135 per person
(it was a few years ago), and we all considered it WELL worth it!

| RE .5 - You're very welcome. By the way, the name of the glacier I referred to
in .4 is the Mendenhall Glacier; I couldn't remember it when I entered .4, but
I happened to go through some of my Alaska photos a couple of days after I
entered that reply...
