No discussion of hurricane Andrew? I was hoping to open up this notesfile and read what the cruises did when hurricane Andrew ripped through the Bahamas and Florida. I was in NYC on Ellis Island on Saturday (August 22) and saw the Meridian and the Westward head out underneath the Verrazano bridge on the way to Bermuda. I imagine they had no problems with the hurricane but what about all the ships that left Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and San Juan on Saturday. Where were they when the hurricane hit and did they cancel cruises or modify itineraries or what? Just wondering... John

Evidently there was little or no damage to the Port facilities in Miami and Fort Lauderdale from Andrew. The only cruises which were canceled were the four day cruises which were to have left on the Monday that the storm hit. One or two ships which were scheduled to return stayed at sea for an extra day. Since then ships have sailed on schedule. Most cruise lines reservation offices have been affected by the storm. Due to a curfew which is still in effect, they are closing at 6pm EDT which makes it a tad rough on those of us who book cruises from the left coast. Carnival and RCCL are working reduced hours, Costa is apparently not taking reservations at all right now. I expect that the next issue of the trades will have full details. If you like, I will enter what I find. BTW, Andrew may mean lower cruise prices, especially on 3-4 day cruises. Much of the customer base for these cruises is from Florida and they expect their business from that area to all but disappear, leaving lots of empty berths for folks from outside the area. -jer

Does the curfew limit access to downtown Miami or just southern Dade County? I'm supposed to get to my hotel about 10pm the night before my cruise next Friday. It's on Brickell Ave. just south of the Dodge Island bridge (port of Miami.) Bill glued to The Weather Channel at :48 past the hour for "Tropical Update" watching that new strong wave coming off the coast of Africa...

I'm not sure but I suspect that it is voluntary due to power still being out in southern Dade county. I spoke with a Carnival reservationist today who said that they are staggering their hours so that folks with no electricity at home can get home before dark. If flights are arriving at that time, then it certainly must be okay to travel after dark. After all, only so many people can bunk in at the airport! ;-);-)

Well, I just got back from our cruise. Miami's northern and downtown areas are fully functional EXCEPT that road signs and traffic signals are out of order or missing all over. I had to drive VERY carefully. The port of Miami suffered only slight damage... The cruise was great; I'll enter a trip report this weekend. Bill |
