277.0. "ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE" by USRCV1::TRACY () Tue Apr 09 1991 11:43

I have just won a 5-day, 4-night Royal Caribbean Cruise on the Nordic
Empress for two which will be stopping in Nassau and Freeport, Bahamas.
My husband and I have never been on a cruise before and would like some
ideas about dress (formal/informal), evenings, etc. We won't be taking
this cruise until after October, 1991 because my husband just started
a new job and has no vacation time until then. When is the best time
to take this cruise. Any help you could give me would be greatly
    appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Barbara

When I went on my cruise I brought 2 "cocktail dresses", (for
the 2 "formal" nights on the ship), then for the rest of
the cruise I just wore "regular" dresses. They do (at least
NCL does) have 1 carribean night (people dressed in tropical
outfits), and 1 western night (that night I wore a nice dungaree
skirt set I have). My husband wore a suit for formal night,
then the rest of the cruise wore a shirt/sports coat/tie.

As for the best time to cruise, I'm not sure. Our first cruise
was in August (pretty hot in the carribean in August!), and
our next cruise is in July. All our friends keep asking "why
do you take a cruise in the summer, why not winter?" Well,
my answer is: 1) we can't afford the winter cruise rates, and
    2) I LIKE taking my vacations in the summer, not winter. If
I took my vacation in say February, I'd have nothing to look
    forward to for the summer!

Hope this helps. By the way, how the heck did you win a free
    cruise? I'm jealous!!

You're really going to enjoy yourself! My husband and I just returned
from the 5 day Nordic Empress cruise and we loved it. The ship is
beautiful, and kept spotless. We had a mini-suite with a balcony, so
we were able to find a private place for an afternoon cocktail (we took
full advantage of the cabin service). There were only two "dressy"
evenings, but folks really went all out for the Captain's dinner. If
you have any specific questions regarding the this ship/cruise, send me
    mail.

p.s. I've also cruised in October, and we had excellent weather...

Linda, thank you for your reply and the information. In answer to your
question as to how I won the cruise - it's like this:

I had open heart surgery three years ago at the age of 40 - I had my
mitral valve replaced and was back to work full time in 6 weeks. Since
that time I have poored my heart and soul into the American Heart
Association and their work. Every year since then I have participated
in the American Heart Association's Heart Walk/Run. This is done in
February or March each year and there are 3 and 5 mile walks and 3, 5,
7 and 10 mile runs. The purpose is to raise monies for heart research.
    The first year I raised $635 dollars (with Digital's matching gift);
    the second year I raised $1,600 dollars (with Digital's matching gift);
this past year I raised $5,037 and won the grand prize which happened
to be the cruise. I managed to raise that great amount because when I
ask for money, I tell them that the money goes to help people like me
and that I wouldn't be alive if it weren't for the research and the
money. People tend to contribute if they can see the results and I am
living proof. I am 100% fixed, now and feel wonderful. Now I can live
to enjoy my kids and grandchildren.

Again, thanks for the information - I believe we will be going on this
cruise end of January 1992 or beginning of February. We are trying to
chose a time that will have the fewest kids on board and also have to
wait until after December (my husband started a new job last December
and does not get any vacation until after one full year of employment),
so we figured end of January or beginning of February.
