251.0. "Cruising Mexico" by REGENT::PITTS () Fri Jan 11 1991 12:33

Can anyone give me some recent information on cruises to Mexico?
I want to see Mexico, but don't know anything about it, so I
thought a cruise is the best way to experience different parts
    of the country.

I would appreciate any information on what cruiseline to use, which
are the best ports to stop at, any experiences that you have had,
    good or bad.
Also, if it is helpful, I will be traveling from Boston.

    Thanks in advance,

    LeeAnne

My mother is currently cruising on the Sagafjord (which is a Cunard
ship). She flew from Logan to Ft Lauderdale where she boarded the
ship, then cruised to Curacao, thru the Panama Canal, next to
Costa Rica, then Acapulco, then to C. San Lucas (Mexico) and on
to Los Angeles where she will depark and fly home.

The sister ship, Vistafjord, also makes a reverse cruise only
it visits Aruba instead of Curacao.

This is a 2-week cruise. I can photocopy some info if you'd like it.

There are several cruise lines that offer cruises along the Mexican
Rivera (the west coast). Most leave from LA or San Diego. Almost
any flavor of itineray is possible. Best bet is to see a travel
agent and explain what you'd like to do. N.B., travel agents don't
charge you for their service; they get commissions from the businesses
they book with. I doubt that you want anything as extensive (expensive)
as described in .1 but I'm almost sure that a travel agent can find
    exactly what you do want.

I authored reply .1 but after talking to my mother on her return,
I thought I had better enter some additional info. This was my mother's
first cruise on this ship. She said that most of the people on it
were NOT interested in sight-seeing once the ship docked - much to her
dismay and they mainly remained on board or just went shopping.

Also, she thought that the passengers were a bit too old acting for her
(and she will be 69 in June) and that if she were to go again, she would
try a different line. (My mother is a very young 68).

She did say, however, that the food was magnificent, service
impeccible, the stewards and stewardesses polite, charming,
    intelligent, and the ship beautiful.

I think she was looking for all the ship and crew had to offer (which
it did) plus passengers who were generally more energetic and who
    wanted to do more sightseeing.

I guess in fairness to the passengers, these were mostly seasoned
"cruise-takers" and had already done their sightseeing on earlier
cruises- my mother just started later in life than did they.
