42.0. "HOW TO SHOP WHILE CRUISING?????" by AKOV12::LORTIE () Wed Oct 12 1988 17:54

    	I have some questions about shopping in the carribean. I
    will be cruising on carnival's Festival sailing the 23rd. We will
    be stopping at St. Thomas, St. Martins, Martinique, and Barbados.
    Can anyone point out some good places to do some christmas shopping
    while were down there. And, can someone give us some pointers about
    carrying the gifts back home? What about taking them back on the
    airlines? Is it wise to carry an empty suitcase to fill up back
    in the islands? What about any weight limits or baggage limits on
    the airlines? What about customs, Is there much of a duty on goods
    purchased in the islands.

    Thanks to anyone who can help.

42.12 Checked bags plus 1 carry onGUCCI::HERBALSun Oct 16 1988 10:255
    Up to $400 is duty free. Each airline passenger is allowed 2 checked
    bags and one carry on bag. Fragile items (i.e., bottles) are usually
    best carried in separate bag aboard plane. I found though that your
    soiled clothing can be packed well around gifts in suitcase (who
    care about wrinkles then?) for the trip back.

    re.1	Thanks! I also found out that $800 is duty free from
    St. Thomas.

42.4Ship It Back...PARITY::GOSSELINKen @DTN 247-2498Fri Oct 21 1988 16:5313
     I believe that most things can also be shipped back to your home,
    rather than you carrying it back - ask the merchant. I sent home
    quite a few purchases from Bermuda - aside from some Customs paperwork,
    it was no hassle, and all the items arrived home before I did (delivery
    timing can also be arranged).

     Even if you decide to carry stuff back and are over the limit of
    baggage imposed by the airline, you'll only be charged a small fee
    for the extra bag.....

    A friend recently returned from her cruise with a great tip for
    packing fragile items. She took sheets of plastic bubble packing
    with her (you know, the stress relief kind we all like to sit and
    pop!) She used it to wrap glassware and then surrounded in clothing
    in her suitcase. The items made it home in one piece despite rough
    handling!
42.6Dirty clothes wrapping...CAMLOT::FAMULAROJoe, ZKO3-2T43, DTN381-2565Wed May 17 1989 09:446
    At tip...

    Simply wrap fragile items with dirty clothes. No need to carry
    any special wrapping with you.
