I've been asked if I'd like to go on a cruise and I'm very reluctant. I'm scared to death of being sea sick for the entire trip ! Can anyone give some advice on what to do about this fear ?? I've heard that you can get various remedies but I'd like to know which ones work the best. Also, is it true that it's best to get a room in the middle of the ship in case of rough seas ???? "D"

1. Less movement of ship towards back of ship than front. 2. Patch placed behind ear (prescribed by doctor) seemed to work on those that used them. Doctor aboard ship (Royal Princess) did not dispense these due to side effects (drying of mouth and dialated eyes) but dispensed a pill instead. The pill seemed to work for my wife. Overall, ship did not seem to rock that much and did not talk to anyone that was complaining of sickness.

Thanks for the tips !! I'd have to say that I've only very few horror stories....everyone else though, tells me there's nothing like a cruise !! I'm sure I'll find out one day and when I do, I'll let you know what I think !! "D"
40.3 | SEA SICKNESS - PROS AND CONS | JULIET::GREATHOUS_CA | Wed Dec 14 1988 13:33 | 32
"D" I'm not sure if this will relieve your mind or not, but my experiences are varied and I'm still a confirmed cruise-a-holic! Our first cruise, to the Carrribean on SS Norway was late April/early May timeframe. The first night, while dancing in the disco, I suddenly became VERY unsteady on my feet and instantly felt "sick" to my stomach. I felt this way on and off during the entire trip. One saving grace was that while ashore, no sickness. All things considered, I LOVED cruising. Second time out, we went to Mexico on the Carnival Cruise Line Tropicale in mid-October timeframe. Absolutely no sea sickness. A wonderful cruise experience. Still a confirmed cruise-a-holic. Third time out, we flew to Hawaii, boarded American Hawaiian Cruise Lines' SS Independence over Thanksgiving timeframe. From the mement we left the dock (any dock!) I was seasick. We still had a great time. I wish I could say something positive about the ship though. Our impression was very negative. The ship was very old and not very well maintained. Deck very much in need of varnish, brass needed polishing, etc. All things considered, we are planning a 20th anniversary cruise for next year (hopefully for the mediterranean). Recommend cruising to everyone with a sense of adventure, love of fin dining, and people oriented. Good luck to you. I recommend it highly. "Smiley"

One thing you might do is check into the type of stabilizers on the ship you intend to book when you plan a vacation. I don't know mich about these but last April, I cruised the Carribean with friends aboard the Sun Princess. The Sun Princess had state-of-the-art computer controlled stabilizers and the boat did not rock at all. I must note that the seas were also very calm on the trip. The Sun Princess has since been sold. A little research into this might save you some discomfort. I grew up in a family that owns small boats and I love rough seas and am not prone to seasickness. I was sort of disappointed we didn't rock a little more (although I wouldn't want anyone else to get sick!). I love the feeling of the swells after crawling into my bunk for the night. Denise

RE.4 Denise, I know what you mean about bed time. I never slept so good as when on the cruise. It's that gentle rocking feeling. I loved it. Doreen |
