I'll be doing my defib certification next week. Has anyone looked at
the new protocols for keeping your certification? A fellow EMT-D has
informed me that one must now recert every 3 months here in MA! This
seems excessive. Comments?

Jim,
in our dept the EMT-D needs to do a qa recert every 3 months, this
consists of doing a simulated defib shock on a training annie, the
sequence is recorded on the paper from the machine and kept in a
seperate file inhouse, and a copy is sent to our medical director.

The local NH region EMT-Basic now includes semiautomatic defibrillation
and EOA, and the required defibrillation recert is once every six months,
with the defibrillation retesting incorporated into the biannual EMT-Basic
recert. And training now includes assistance with meds. (The 6 month
semiautomatic defibrillation recert requirement may be removed, now that
this training is part of the EMT-Basic.)
NH EMT-Intermediate is now permitted SQ epinephrine 1:1K anaphylaxis,
first line ACLS (IV epinephrine 1:10K, IV atropine), IV D50, SQ and IV
naloxone, IV thiamine, dual IVs, ET, semiautomatic and (apparently soon)
manual defibrillation.
All under standing orders.
