I think Fabric Place would be a good resource for finding out
how to do this.

| Better Homes and Gardens often has how to's on headboards. I seem to remember
it a couple of times over the last year or so. Sorry can't point you to a spec-
ific month though.

| Thanks for the pointers. I'll check out the web pages suggested. I
may sign up for a class at fabric place -- although the next one isn't
offered until springtime --

| I've made two headboards now - one for a double bed and one for a
single. There are both padded but fixed to the board. Did you want
a cover that removed?
I did mine with two old feather pillows and a staple gun and telephone
wire. It's great fun.
Just cut a shape from block board for chip board with a jigsaw. Put a
down a pillow, carefully cut it open from below (so the feathers don't
get everywhere) and then mould into the shape you want. Cover with
wadding and staple down. Then get your material and lay over. Don't
do a bit here and a bit there. Start at the bottom and work up. It's
quite organic and arty.
I wanted a heart shape for the double bed with scrolls around the edge
and a crest at the top. So one pillow each side cut down the back with
most of the feathers pushed to the top to make the heart shape.
Telephone wire makes great piping.
This is difficult to describe but here goes. Put the material (I used
velvet) down right side up. Smooth it up to the padded shape. Fold
back at that point and on the fold, staple along the shape. Don't go
too far up. You do the other side of the shape from the other side of
the fold pulling the fabric tight across the shape. If you want you
can add the piping as you go. Put the telephone wire up against the
stapled fold and then fold back and staple close to the wire.
You have to work out as you go how you get round the shapes without the
staples being on the wrong side (which sometimes they have to be). You
can hide these by making up fabric roses or gluing some piping over the
top.
I'm afraid I haven't made much sense. I love my staple gun and just
bang away with it (?!) The best advice is just get one and play - you
can prize out any mistakes.
