923.0. "DEClaser 3500 on Ultrix 4.4 over network printing." by KERNEL::COFFEYJ (La Feline Flooz - a unix cat) Tue Mar 18 1997 15:08
I had a customer call on setting up the above configuration.
It wasn't printing landscape or various other commands from
the command line - easily resolved - it was set up as a remote
print queue.
So being as this printer has it's own IP address, even though it's
thoroughly unsupported under Ultrix, (according to SPD and that's
what counts) I sent the customer the fax of setting up network
printing on ultrix using the /etc/services file.
He tried that and can ping it but a telnet gets refused.
I suspect it might be the number used in /etc/services, he's tried
9100 (hplj4+) 1000 and 1005 (I can't remember where they came from)
to no avail.
Is there a correct number?
Will this method ever work?
He had problems with it originally (not that long ago) printing
rather than interpreting commands and having to physically set
settings on the printer for jobs that then still didn't work.
Am I right that Ultrix does not support this printer?
I understand it that neither the most recent Ultrix or dUnix
SPD do not mention it therefore they do NOT support it.
However the documentation we (digital) ship with the
DEClaser 3500 says that it is supported.
This is just one of the cases we've come across where this is
not only embarassing but seriously unprofessional not to mention
wasting MSC's time!
This particular customer is refusing to pay his supplier,
who now wants stuff in writing from the customer as to why
he won't pay. I think it's quite reasonable of him, he asked
for a 2100 or a 3200 to go with his Ultrix system, either would
have been supported and worked. They said those two were no longer
available and that they had to ship the 3500 instead - have we really
retired that many of our printers that the 2100 and 3200 are
gone already??!!!!
They based their statement that it was a direct supported replacement
presumably on the DEClaser3500 documentation - it's just plain wrong.
So, what is the situation?
Can a customer get a 2100? Did the supplier mislead him about this?
If not what are the available supported printers of this range?
It seems as if there probably aren't any printers you can still buy
that are supported by Ultrix - is this really intentional??!!
Who do I chase about this?
I've a feeling this customer is going to come back if we can't get this
going (very probable unless someone comes up with a full setup that
will work in here in the next day or so!) and is going to want a
written statement on the printer/OS/situation, which of course we
can't do out of the CSC - anyone know a product manager for
DEClaser3500s?
We keep getting calls on them and they're all genuinely upset
customers and genuinely unsupported configurations, which due to
the way we do business here now oddly enough we actually don't
provide support on unsupported configurations any more.
If we wanted to convince customers to buy HP printers we're
doing a good job of it! (I certainly would given a choice!)

| Thanks!
This could make a big difference in this case
(I hope!)
