901.0. "tektronix Phaser240 on parallel port of workstation 500" by BRSADV::BUGGENHOUT () Tue Jan 28 1997 16:46

hoi

a customer just called to ask if he could connect his tektronix Phaser240 on the
parallel port of his workstation 500, running Digital UNIX 4.0 ?
And how ?

He said also that other Digital people told him that running UNIX on his
workstation made his parallel port unsupported, is this true ????
Perhaps unsupported but it would work with the correct filter as
explained in note 760 ?

Thanks for the info

The parallel port is supported in write only mode. That is an official
position statement from development engineering.

>...connect his tektronix Phaser240 to the parallel port.

Sure IF the Phaser240 is using the standard centronics pinout.

it is telephone support so difficult to know what the customer is doing
but after the setup NOTHING works.
The printer is not doing anything not even tries to print so i have
the impression is is not a filter but a 'hardware' problem.
Is it necessary to 'activate' the parallel port on a workstation 500 or
what do I need to check for in the config file of the kernel ?

Or could it be it is not a standard centronics pinout on this printer ?

Suggestions are welcome ?!

Thanks

I don't remember which version of v4.0 this was fixed in so check the
printcap file and make sure rw is NOT there.

While the formatting may be incorrect you can verify the connection by
directly sending a file to the parallel port. This would eliminate
any print spooling questions.

For a text printer try:

	cat /etc/motd > /dev/lp0

For a postscript printer try:

	cat /etc/motd | /usr/lbin/ln03rof > /dev/lp0

If you can cat a file to the printer then it is a printcap setup issue. If not
then you have connection issues.
