383.5 | HELP! Problem printing from some local systems, not others | CADSYS::MEREB | | Wed Apr 09 1997 18:35 | 27 |
| I am having problems printing from a couple of machines via a
remote system (not a boot server).
The remote system has all nodes in its /etc/hosts.lpd file
yet only 2 out of the 5 nodes in the hosts.lpd file have problems:
Warning: simxx.hlo.dec.com does not have access to remote printer lps20e10
(I also get the "waiting for queue to be enabled on simsrv" message,
but I believe it's related.)
/etc/printcap files have similar setups for working/non-working
systems.
The remote system is running Digital UNIX 3.2
The systems that have a problem are running 3.2D
The systems that are able to print are running 3.2 and 4.0
All systems can get to the printer via another remote system (4.0A)
lpsof ownership is the same on all systems.
Am I missing something? Is there something else involved in the
access to a printer?
Thanks,
Janine

383.6 | case sensitive or domain .v. nodomain? | KERNEL::COFFEYJ | La Feline Flooz - a unix cat | Thu Apr 10 1997 11:07 | 7 |
| There's some sensitivity around how (I think) gethostbyname() works
in that the order and case in /etc/hosts is significant.
On the central machine which the others are trying to access
double check that the first entry after the address in /etc/hosts
is the same as in /etc/hosts.lpd and the same asthe remote machines
are identifying themselves as.

383.7 | it works! | CADSYS::MEREB | | Thu Apr 10 1997 16:42 | 9 |
| Thanks,
One of the systems had an alias before the full name in /etc/hosts
while in /etc/hosts.lpd there is only the full name.
After rearranging the order to have the full name right after the
IP address in /etc/hosts, it worked fine.
