178.0. "Ultrix hang and no crash dump possible" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Gernot Meyer) Mon Mar 24 1997 09:09

Hey

I have a customer with a 5000/240 that sometimes simply hangs
(console clock stops). Also the network is unavailable.
The only possible thing is to press on the reset-button.

Sometimes there are some write-problems to a scsi-connected (WORM-drive)
before the 'hang' occures but normally there are no errors in any logfile.

To get a crash-file I have to boot the system after that without initializing
the server and that's my problem.
A cnfg-command on the scsi-bus witch contains the disk drives doesn't respond
anything.
That causes the server to be unbootable anymore because no disk-drive is found
on scsi-bus.
An init will solve the problem, but I am unable to get a crashfile...

My question: What can I do to get a crashfile... Is there any possibility to
save the memory contents ??

btw: The worm-drive that uerf logs problems about is on a different scsi-bus
which is still available after pressing the reset button.

Is there anybody who can give some helpful hints/tips ???

The customer is running Ultrix V4.4 and also patch Ultv44-011-4

Thanks in advance and regards

Gernot Meyer, BEO

on the original bus, how long is the scsi cables? is everything
terminated? what type of disks are out there... ? It soulds like
the hang is becuase of the scsi bus... send the uerf -R -r 300
output so that we can see what is out there..

    Thanks

Hey

I checked all that. changing the SCSI-cable and terminators. I did not
changed the server itself or the SCSI-adapters.
the machine is a DS5000/240 with Ult 4.4 on 3 rz29 disks in a pizzabox.
On SCSI-bus is the box and a tlz06 drive. On the other SCSI-bus only
a terastore-jokebox with 2 scsi worm-drives.

In urf there is no information except the standard startup info
after the system hang but info between these info.

    Hmmm

this gets tricky since rz29's came out after ultrix 4.4 and 4.5
were qualified and are not in the spd. But ultrix does have the
scsi cam built in at that rev. what revision is the tlz06 at?
i.e the uerf out put from the last bootup?

So if you hit the halt button and then type
go 0x8003008, then try to boot, it cannot since the devices drop
off the bus....I wonder if we can move the tape drive to the second
scsi temporarily to see if that would help. Also what is the firmware
on the rz29's (not knowing if that would matter)

Your earlier note mentioned pizza box. Since the term has been
used for various boxes over the years, could you be more explicit?
There is a BA35x desktop shelf that uses the name, but the
RZ29B isn't supported in it. They tend to over heat. The
description you gave of the system also doesn't match the
configuration list posted in .4. Those seem to be RZ28s.
