Has anybody played Townsend Country Club in Townsend? I'm told it's a public course that has just recently re-opened after an overhaul. I'd like to hear about the course layout, conditions, and whether it is at all suitable for beginners. Any insights are would be appreciated. -Kevin [Posted by WWW Notes gateway]

I played it a couple weeks ago. It's 6188 yards from the blue tees,
5814 from the white tees. The starter said "don't play the blue tees
unless you're a 5 handicap or better." He was right.
It's one of the more difficult courses I've played. Hilly, narrow
fairways. Didn't help that it was the Saturday with 40 MPH wind gusts.
I never do well on a new course anyway, but I found this one
particularly frustrating.
There are a few holes that require very long carries over heavy brush
(170 to 200 yards). One, the 13th, I thought was a particularly unfair
hole. I think they realize it, there were two more tee boxes being
built to make the hole a little more playable.
I'll probably go back someday, but I'm in no hurry. Maybe when I'm a 5
handicap...
