1967.0. "THE END OF THE PGA TOUR? THE WORLD GOLF TOUR" by STOWOA::ODIAZ (Octavio, MCS/SPS) Tue Nov 29 1994 13:13

(Let's see how many people are accesing this notes file)

According to Golf World magazine, 11/25 edition, Greg Norman and Fox TV
Network have proposed to start of what many people had said was the next
evolution of professional golf: the World Golf Tour.

Their proposal is for 8 events in 1995, four in the US, the rest in
different places of the world (my guess is Europe, Japan, Australia and
South Africa or Far East), many of them the week before each major
tournament. Purse is $3M USD each, 40 players field, 30 from Sony
ranking, $600K 1st prize, $30K last plus travel allowances and $1M player
of the year bonus.

Now the issue is that the US PGA tour was not involved in the design,
planning or $$$, so obviously they are against it, to the point that they
might revoke the PGA tour card of any player that decides to joint the
WGT. The articles states that many players have shown interest and even
support for the WGT, but only if it doesn't affect they participation in
the PGA tour. To top it all the Federal Trade Commision is investigating
the PGA Tour for restraint of trade due to its practice of players
needing approval to play in a conflicting event (any event held at the
same time as a tour event). Nicklaus had to pay the tour a $200K fee to
play his "Shell's Wonderful World of Golf" match against Plamer.

The European tour is also very nervous because they are loosing players
to the US tour already (Faldo and Els plan to play in the 1995 US PGA
tour).

The magazine goes to say that the long term implications could be very
damaging for the PGA tour, so already Finchem, the new tour commisioner,
has said that he has started talks with the WGT in order to reach some
agreement (and I guess, get a piece of the action) so the two tours don't
conflict.

Sooooo... my take is that besides whatever financial inerest this may
affect, the bottom line is that it would be great for us fans to be able
to see all year long, tournaments with the best golfers in the world.

Other opinions?

1967.1MORE GOLF!NITMOI::LEMAIRETue Nov 29 1994 17:3213
I think it's great - the more golf the better. As a side
benefit, maybe more Men's golf will lead to more golf for
Women, Juniors, Seniors, etc. The PGA tour can wake up and
smell the fertilizer - they are not the last word on golf!
    Competetion is a wonderful thing.

I can't wait until the golf channel comes on-line on cable.
All Golf - All The Time! They're going to need more than just
the PGA tour to keep those airwaves interesting!

    its great news

a tour of the creme de la creme will be amazing

the euro and us pga's have gone complacent and with a surfeit of
mediocre players - lets get the best vs the best with sensible
qualification rules so anyone can shoot for inclusion on the tour

    can't wait

Things seem to be heating up!

The Boston Globe had an article today on this matter and reports that
the PGA Tour and Finchem have pretty much told the WGT that they are
not recognized and that PGA tour players will not be given waivers to
    play the WGT events.

Also an article in USA Today. Events would be scheduled the
week before the majors and Finchem said he'll suspend players
who play in the US if there's a tour event that week. He lets
them play outside the US only. Looks like Norman may challenge
him the week before the Masters...

Id love to see the best vs the best more often than we do today. It
would probably double that opportunity. My guess is that the PGA would
be unsuccessful in applying fines or disqualifying anyone who
participates in the WGT. But can't you just see it now -- more suites
and litigation with someone going out on strike or a lockout!! If that
were to happen, my view of the golfing profession or really the
beaurocracy behind it all would certainly be diminished.
