The GOLF-L listserv has had an interesting thread running recently
focused on the pros and cons of having one's spouse/significant other
also playing golf. As you could imagine there were a variety of
examples promoting both sides.
I have been successful in getting my spouse interested in the game and
am about to experience the rewards. We are planning a trip in late
January/early February to the South Carolina area to relax and play a
few rounds. I need your help........
I have read much of the advertisements found in the back of Golf and
Golf Digest but prefer a personal recommendation. Any suggestions?
We will want to do other things in addition to golf but we have no
expertise in the South Carolina area. Any sugestions/comments would be
greatly appreciated.

See the many notes about Myrtle Beach... Lots to do there (like
endless shopping), as well as hundreds (yes HUNDREDS) of golf
courses.

I would definately recommend Hilton Head during this time of the year,
as their weather is close to northern Florida's. I've been twice to
both Myrtle and Hilton Head and Myrtle is very risky weather wise
during January and February. Also, I believe your wife would enjoy
Hilton Head more then Myrtle, as it has superior restuarants and
shopping and since January and February are their off-season, you can
get some good room/golf packages. The island is simply beautiful and
you will beable to enjoy it without the normal crowds.

I have been to Hilton Head three times and it is great. I would agree
with .2 that the weather may be better. I recommend Harbour Town since
you have seen it and you can find out how it feels to walk down 18 and
see the light house feel the wind in your face and know you need to hit
it on the screws to get there in regulation. Shipyard is great and
there are many others. Restaurant's are good. Not a great deal of
night life, but then that's why you're bringing the wife isn't it?
We're planning trip number four for next year, probably in September.
We have stayed at Sea Pines Plantation and Shipyard and were able to
get reasonable and nice accommodations - if you stay at Sea Pines, you
get a discount on Harbour Town fees, which have gone up recently.
Our last trip, we played Harbour Town, Planter's Row, Shipyard and the
Ocean Course at Sea Pines. I eagled number one at Harbour Town and our
trip was fantastic.

My wife and I also enjoyed Hilton Head Island -- this past April. We
stayed at the Palmetto Dunes in a nice condo. She played 9 holes and
drove the cart on the back 9 on the two Palmetto courses. The shop
pro's couldn't have been kinder or more helpful. We went out late one
afternoon and only paid for *one player and cart*!
I snuck over to Harbor Town one afternoon and got 17 holes in there
before dark ( < $100 after 4pm). They do a instruction-n-play-day deal
at Sea Pines as well. I would have done that if I had known in
advance.
In April it's downright hot (or was when we were there; high 80's). We
really enjoyed it and will return.

ps. I grabbed a course promo/guide book when I was down there. I
always meant to enter in some of the info. If I get a chance to
I'll add some stuff to whichever (500,1138) Hilton Head note lists
courses to play.
pps. A buddy here noticed that America Online (subscription dial-up
service) has some sort of neat golf course selection database.
