1914.1 | World Cup of Golf? | STOWOA::ODIAZ | Octavio, Dev. Suppt. Svcs - MCS/SPS | Tue Jun 28 1994 14:29 | 20 |
| Re: <<< Note 1914.0 by KOALA::DEFELICE >>>
The traditionalists (and I will venture that many will be Europeans
since they are not involved in the Pres. Cup) will say it's not the
same thing, no history, no tradition, no Country (Continent?) that
stands behind the players, etc.
The sports fans will say (me included) that there are too many top
golfers that have been excluded in the only internationally-focused
professional golf team event. And I am not including here tourneys
like the Johnny Walker Cup, etc, which are international but the
winner is a single individual that is not really representing a
country. So I am definitely for the Pres Cup and will spend good
time watching the matches.
But in this case, they have excluded Europe. They should only have
ONE tournament that matches ALL players. Something like the World
Cup of Golf.

| So the next Major is the Open played at Turnbery this year, should be a
good tourney.
I feel Norman might defend his title it has not happened since Tom Watson
did it for 8 years on the spin (Or did it seem like that)
I will not be attending too far, can anyone tell me what the track is
like.
Joe

Sorry Joe, I forgot those two since they get no/little promotion in
the US. Are they perceived in the UK as true international team
competitions?

1914.5 | Info on Turnberry & Bi-Bi | WOTVAX::FROSTJ | Jack Frost | Thu Jun 30 1994 05:18 | 24 |
| re.3 I had the pleasure/pain of playing the Ailsa course at Turnberry
six weeks ago in glorious sunshine and high winds (48mph and off the
shore rather than the norm which is off the sea). Scored 10 stableford
points off 13 handicap and was by no means the worst score. Next day
managed a gross 93 which was very pleasing.
The course is a monster and was being brought to perfection by the
greenkeepers from the R&A. The greens were very fast even in mid-May.
They will be like lightning by the start of the Open. They were also
watering the rough to ensure additional growth (as if it needed it!).
Weather will be a big factor. In '86 in the first round no player broke
par and the aggregate score over par for the field was 1251 strokes.
Most memorable hole is the 9th (Bruce's Castle) where Trevino is
alleged to have demanded a life-line before stepping onto the somewhat
exposed tee. Needs a carry of 220+ to make the fairway which would be
about impossible in the wind I played in.
I'm gone today from DEC but would just say I've enjoyed this
conference. Happy Golfing.
Jack.

Turnberry is about 15 miles south of the DIGITAL manufacturing
facility here in Ayr. Needless to say, us golf nuts will be attending.
The golf club in Ayr will be stewarding 1 of the holes during the
competition, which allows the volunteers free entry to the course.
It should be a good Open competition, I find it hard to pick a winner
just now. The weather will play a big factor in the event. If, as is
the norm, the wind blows off the sea, do not expect many low scores.
Whoever handles the wind best will be in with a great chance. I only
hope they don't allow the rough to grow too thick as many of the
fairways are pretty tight and anyone going 5 or 10 yards off-line can
be in DEEP trouble.
Danny.
ps Els is probably favourite at the moment but I've got a feeling that
the winner will not be one of the "established" stars.
