Subject: Golf-Ballesteros Resigns from Ryder Cup Committee
Date: Tue, 3 May 94 10:10:08 PDT
LONDON (Reuter) - Seve Ballesteros resigned as a member of
the Ryder Cup Committee Tuesday because he has publicly backed a
potential venue for the 1997 tournament in Spain.
``In retrospect I should not have been invited or accepted
the position when I had already declared my support for one of
the candidates,'' said Ballesteros.
``I do not think there is any Member of the Committee that
loves the Ryder Cup more than I, or knows my country and my
people better than I do.
``But I find myself in a very difficult position because I
have stated clearly and strongly that in my opinion Novo Sancti
Petri is the best venue for the Ryder Cup.''
Whether or not the rest of the Committee agrees could be
known by the end of the month.
They meet May 25 and Ken Schofield, Executive Director of
the PGA European Tour said, ``If the Committee feels they are in
a position to finalize the venue and location then their
decision will be known immediately.''
Ballesteros promised, ``I will accept and respect the final
decision. The Ryder Cup is for me the greatest event in the game
of golf and the most important thing is that it remains that
way, and especially when it comes to Spain.''
Schofield added: ``Seve's resignation has been accepted by
his colleagues with regret, but with complete understanding. No
one has done more for the recent successes of the Ryder Cup than
Seve and no single person has done more for it arriving in Spain
as the first (European) nation to host the matches outside Great
Britain.
``Seve's agreement to accept the final venue and location
selection of his colleagues is very important.''

Seve has upset the Ryder Cup Captain and Committee by claiming that he
was offered a One Million Dollar gift to support Valderama as the venue
for the first Ryder Cup in Spain.
That claim has been rejected by the Valderama Club who went on to say a
payment was made to Seve, but the payment was for Seve's input to the
redesign of the 17th Green !
Nice work if you can get it.

1890.4 | ALL GONE ....TICKETS SOLD OUT! | ABACUS::LEARY | Cin's hubby, Shannon's DADDY! | Thu May 26 1994 12:33 | 19 |

Good luck grabbing tickets for the Cup defense. Per my brother-in-law
in Rochester, NY tickets are gone...SOLD OUT! And he is scrambling to
nail down any possible leads. Oak Hill itself and the tourney
committee have nothing to offer. I hope I don't have to divorce him.
I have only been nagging...(cough,choke...err) asking him, rather...
to score the tickets since the Ryder Cup was televised. Good thing
he has a gorgeous wife w/ equally gorgeous sisters. A good slack
cutting reason if ever there were one.
Any suggestions to keep my brother-in-law on my will?
Thanks,

| Its suprising how the event has taken off, when it was UK v US it was a
dead event no its Europe v US it has really been a popular event.
Its played in a tremendous spirit with Seve and Zinger having a ruck
over cheating, it mirrors golf clubs in England play ashard as you can
gamesmanship if you can swing it, no cheating jsut rying to put your
opponnent of.
Now tell me i am the only one ever to try gamesmanship on a course, all
my opponnents try it on me.
There is nothing better than seeing Cory Pavin punching the air when he
hols a putt or Seve (If he ever does again) its a real battle a great
game.
Its like the Majors nothing to do with money, golf for golfs sake
playing for your team.
The Euro team is a bit shabby we are losing a proven winners the edge
has gone, Faldo Lyle Langer Seve Lane all the greats are sliping, our
problem i dont expect you USA guys to be concerned you just want to
grind us into the dirt and rightly so.

And to make it better for the US, and I don't if due to injuries,
accidents, etc, of some of the top US tour players, but it was an
interesting statistic on TV at the Memorial, that, there has been a
record number of first time winners in the US PGA tour, I believe
five or six, and that noone has won two tournaments this year, so
there is a lot of good, fresh new talent brewing.

I don't remember anything about cheating. I thought it was the whole
deal about Seve trying to unnerve Azinger at the Cup and Azinger giving
it right back to him. A lot of standing realllly close while the other
guy is lining up his shot and hitting. Seve picked the wrong guy to do
that with as Azinger is tougher than nails. You know, the "Oh, Yeah!
I'll show you." type. Now, a John Cook probably would have been totally
shaken.

| I never meant cheating as in the Leather wedge, just a bit of
gamesmanship the crowd love it the players have a right old battle it
sorts the men from the boys.
As a famous football manager said once 'Football is not life and death
its more important' as is golf.
I bet Zinger and Seve have a lot of respect for each other

| The cheating incident refered to the foursomes match between Seve & Olazabal and
Azinger & Beck. Unlike amateurs, pros cannot change the make or compression of
the golf ball during the round. During this match Seve noticed that the
oposition had changed the compression of the ball, and questioned it.
No excuse as they are briefed on the rules prior to the days play.
Still adds to the excitement of a great competition.

re: make or compression
I assume this also prevents the use of a balata & 2-piece ball of
the same compression.
The rule is intended to prevent players from choosing hi/low flight
balls to take advantage of wind or terrain, or to use a high spin
ball on an approach but not a drive, etc.
I think that an exception should be made on the greens. I like the
feel of a balata ball on the green, but I can't afford to replace
them each time I hit an iron shot thin. I think that the use of
a different ball on the green should be made legal.

| Jim,
It is against the rules to cgange your ball while playing the hole
unless it is damaged, thats the same for the slashers as it is the
Pros.
If you have been doing this you must be one of the biggest cheats ever!
I played with a guy once in a medal and he hit his ball in the bunker,
he placed his clubs on his bag stand and addressed his ball the bag
stand collapsed all his clubs went in the sand, a 2 shot penalty for
grounding a club in a bunker 13 clubs one of the tee he was playing
28!! he was not happy but it was enforced.
Many people cheat unwittingly, its not cheating really just ignorance
of the rules.

Ya... Can't change ball during a round! I play with a guy once
in a while who takes out a 'water' ball when teeing up on a hole
with a water hazard. I always remind him 'that's not allowed by
the rules'... but it's a very friendly match so what the heck.
(He's *real* cheap and doesn't want to loose a good ball). After
the water hole, he puts a 'good' ball back in play.

Actually, I'd prefer to use balata balls everywhere if they didn't
cut when you look at them crosseyed. Heck, I practiced putting

marked up the cover! Maybe some of the new balls are better.

According to this rule, I say your friend ogt ripped off. I say
now, NO PENALTY at all. I listed the base rule just as background.
Our discussion, I believe, is listed under the exceptions rule.....
As usual, it is impossible to know ALL the rules. That's why I
always carry "the book"!!!
(reprinted without permission)
Rule 14-4. Ball Lying in or Touching Hazard
Except as provided in the Rules, before making a stroke
at a ball which lies in or touches a hazard (whether a
bunker or a water hazard), the player shall not:
a. Test the condition of the hazard or any similar
hazard,
b. Touch the ground in the hazard or water in the
water hazard with a club or otherwise, or
c. Touch or move a loose impediment lying in or
touching the hazard.
Exceptions:
1. Provided nothing is done which constitutes testing the
condition of the hazard or improves the lie of the ball,
there is no penalty if the player (a) touches the ground
in any hazard or water in a water hazard as result of or
to prevent falling (!!!), in moving an obstruction, in
measuring or in retrieving a ball under any Rule or
(this is us, I think)!!!
(b) places his clubs in a hazard.
Penalty for Breach of Rule:
Match play - Loss of hole: Stroke play - Two strokes

Yes, but you quoted USGA rules, whereas they were playing in England
I believe and so they'd use R&AG (is that right Royal and Ancient Golf
assoc.???) rules which might not have that exception.
I don't think both rules governing bodies use identical rule books.

that could be true, but the rules of either body were intended
to be fair. I believe that if it is a penalty, it would be only
assesed once for two srokes.
When you have more than 14 clubs it costs you 2 strokes per hole
for a maximum of 4 strokes (in medal play), not 2 storkes per
club......
I would be very interested if someone could quote the R&A rules
for us!!!

Even without the exception for placing clubs in the hazard, I think
there is no penalty, since the rule against grouding a club seemingly
applies only if you are holding the club. As long as the clubs that
FELL into the hazard neither moved the ball, or improved the player's
stance I feel very sure there was no infraction. Even assuming there
WAS an infraction, the penalty could be no more than 2 strokes for a
single "event." (If you inadvertantly grounded your club, and also
moved the ball, you'd only be forced to take 2 strokes, right???)

once you sign you got your 28!!!!
If a guy walks in a bunker and drops his club, its a penalty the as its
demmed tessting the sand as if you dug your toes in and rooted round,
the Pros settle their stance when at address this is testing but
allowed.
How about the guy who placed a jumper on the ground to avoid his knees
getting wet while playing out of a ditch, 2 shot penalty building a
stance!!!
Tough but these are the rules and they have happend, the guy with the
28 was so shellshocked he would have signed anything its quite famous

In this scenario there are more details that need to be added.
Using a 'water ball' is perfectly legal as long as his 'water ball'
is the same type (brand name, style) as the ball he has played during
the round. Say he's playing a Titleist DT 90 #1. When he comes to the
water hole he pulls out a scuffed Titleist DT 90 #2. It's the same
type of ball only difference is the number of the ball. I believe as
long as he notifies his opponent that he is hitting a different
numbered ball before taking a swing this is legal. If it is the same
number Titleist DT 90 then he doesn't need to say anything. Now if it's
a different STYLE ball, ie, Titleist DT 100 #1 then that's a penalty.
Anyone feel free to correct me if this is wrong...

I think you are correct. However, that player must complete that hole
with the one he teed off with. He can't switch back to the first ball until

Gee,
I'm almost afraid to play this Sunday ! What if I drop my clubs in a hazard
or run out of the same brand and compression of ball. Heck, I rarely have two
balls that are the same in my bag !! Guess I'mn just a big cheater !!! Perhaps
I should quit before the reputation of the game is sullied by my casual disre-
gard for the rules. Old Tom would probably turn over in his grave if he had
any idea how we deal with "lost balls" in the league I play in.
Ever play with someone who was more interested in the rules than playing ?
Makes for a real fun round. You would think they would get tired counting the
clubs in your bag after the 3rd or 4th hole but no ! Maybe some have been
stashed around the course to be picked up as they are needed for those special
shots that come up during a round.
WHAT DOES ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THE RYDER CUP ???????

| My feeling is that you really should play by the rules. I can
understand 'allowances' in friendly matches, but the rules should be
known and it should be understood when 'allowances' are being made. Of
course, knowingly ignoring a rule/penalty is a penalty in itself.
That aside, what rules do you knowingly break?
Mine (in friendly matches... not league, etc.) are smoothing spike
marks (i hate that stupid rule) and asking my playing opponent what
club he's hitting.
As far as playing the same ball, I start with two of the same ball
(usually diff. numbers though) in my pocket. I play with the same ball
until, and if, I lose it. The second ball does not see the light of
day until I lose the first or need to play a provisional. If I have to
dip back into my bag for more, I will get the same type ball. If I'm
out of the same type ball (which I'm usually not) I'll hit whatever
I've got. So, sue me.
My weekend playing partner, and good friend, would not know a rule book
if it hit him in the head. I am convinced that I have seen him break
most every rule in the book out of ignorance. Once he knows the rule
he does not repeat it though. Do I call him on them? Nah, just the
obvious stuff that he knows already.
Read a super article in Golf Digest by Peter Andrews. He's a Scot and
talked about the sport, Scotland, rules, etc. I absolutely loved the
piece. Anyone know of anything else he has written?

I can't believe that we have to play the same type of ball.
I believe that's a PGA rule, not USGA, etc...
Yes, play the same ball for a full hole but if it's damaged
or lost, hit whatever else is in the bag.
When I was a kid, a friend used to use a new ball for putting.
Heck, we were hitting pro-flites and tru-flites and fast-flites
and gawd awful acushnets with smiles on 'em. Gotta at least
put with a round one!

Keith...
I think the rule is 'once a ball has been removed from play,
that ball cannot be put back in play... period'. The use of
a 'water ball' is not a rule infraction, if, as you stated,
the same type of ball is used. This prevents a player from
taking out a balata ball for a short par-3 for the spin,
and then the next hole taking out a hard cover ball for a
long par-5.. or something to that effect.
Bottom line is.. you can't put a ball back into play during
the same round. re- couple back: I understand the 'bending
of rules' but in my regular foursome we try to adhear to all
of them, just so everyone is 'playing by the same rules'.
For instance: We *used* to allow moving the ball off a rock
in the woods/rough. But.. this led to improved lies discussions,
etc. Now we all agree to take a stroke penalty and move it,
unplayable lie. You can always hit it if you want to risk a
knick on your club.

1890.34 | Freddy, Curtis are captain's picks | XELENT::MUTH | I drank WHAT? - Socrates | Mon Aug 14 1995 15:01 | 17 |
| [from ESPNET SportsZone]
Fred Couples, Curtis Strange added to U.S. Ryder Cup Golf team
Captain Lanny Wadkins today added Fred Couples and Curtis Strange to the
United States Ryder Cup team.
The addition of Couples and Strange was made one day after Brad Faxon and
Jeff Maggert used strong finishes at the PGA Championship in Los Angeles to
earn berths on the team.
Faxon and Maggert moved into the top 10 in the points standings and joined
Corey Pavin, Tom Lehman, David Love III, Loren Roberts, Jay Haas, Phil
Mickelson, Ben Crenshaw and Peter Jacobsen on the team. Faxon, Maggert,
Lehman, Roberts and Mickelson have never played in the Ryder Cup, which the
United States will defend at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York,
in September.

very bad pick for the US.

I think these are pretty good picks. Freddy had a good showing at the
Buick and PGA, and plans to play in all the tournaments up to the Ryder
Cup. If his back does act up, Lanny Wadkins can replace him before
the opening ceremonies. I think Curtis is a good pick because he's a
proven winner at Oak Hills (the '89 US Open), and he's on a bit of a
comeback.

1890.38 | I, for one, defer to Wadkins | ROCK::PARKER | | Mon Aug 14 1995 18:04 | 18 |
| I stipulate that I know less about golf and its nuances than many, if
not most, of all who note here. Moreover, I cannot presume to know
more about the professional game and players than Lanny Wadkins.
Now, my opinion: If Fred Couples is physically able to play, then
he would certainly be on my short list of players who can dominate and
win. Even if Freddy is ailing, he is a proven competitor and Ryder Cup
veteran who can lend MUCH stability to first-time and younger players.
There's more to a team than individual talent, and Freddy brings more
than individual talent. My sense is that if Freddy doesn't think he
can contribute, then he'll step down of his own accord. If he agrees
to play, then regardless of his back, he'll help the team. Sure, his
back is a risk, but think of the upside if Freddy is able to play!
I know less about Curtis Strange, but I think no one doubts his
competitiveness. And he is a veteran who could very well play through
some of the younger players by virtue of advice and attitude. Again, I
feel Curtis brings stability.

1890.39 | Freddy as the joker | MKOTS3::CORRIGAN | | Mon Aug 14 1995 19:24 | 8 |
|
I think they have they option of replacing Freddy, if his back is
gone, up to a few days before the competiton. This makes him a good
pick, as a "wild card". If he goes down, then you pick Lee Janzen
(who should have been taken instead of Curtis).
IMHO

My vote would have been for Fuzzy Zoeller instaed of Curtis Strange.
Fuzzy has been playing excellent golf lately, and is almost impossible
to beat in match play. Lanny screwed up, IMHO.

| Ian Woosnam joins European Ryder Cup team
Olazabal withdraws because of recurring foot injury
The Associated Press
VIRGINIA WATER, England (Sept. 11, 1995) -- Jose Maria Olazabal withdrew
from Europe's Ryder Cup team Monday and was replaced by Ian Woosnam.
Olazabal, who has suffered from a recurring injury to his right foot, said
it would be almost impossible for him to play two 18-hole matches in one
day.
''Jose Maria and I mutually agreed that it would be sensible for him to
withdraw,'' European captain Bernard Gallacher said. ''He is naturally
extremely disappointed, but he was reluctant to be vulnerable as a team
member.
''Jose Maria had hoped to prove his fitness after being picked for the
team, but he acknowledges that his right foot is no better. If anything, he
says, it is a little worse.
''The good news is that we can replace one Masters champion with another --
which demonstrates the strength in depth of European golf.''
Gallacher was pleased that Woosnam was available.
''I'm delighted that Ian has agreed to play,'' he said. ''He has the unique
ability to raise his game for the big occasion, as he proved in the last
Ryder Cup match when he was the top points scorer with 4 out of 5.''
The Ryder Cup takes place Sept. 22-24 at Oak Hill in Rochester, N.Y.
Olazabal's withdrawal was announced one day after he finished tied for 26th
in the Lancome Trophy in Paris with a 1-over-par 281. The event was won by
another Ryder Cup player, Colin Montgomerie of Scotland.
Since he made his Cup debut in 1987, Olazabal had played all five rubbers
in each of his four matches and been a key member of the team.
He formed a highly successful partnership with fellow Spaniard Seve
Ballesteros in foursomes and four-balls, winning 11 and halving two in
their 15 matches together.
Woosnam has played in the last six Ryder Cups, and was Europe's best player
at The Belfry two years ago.

1890.50 | Going to Sundays matches... | AD::SMITH | | Fri Sep 22 1995 11:16 | 29 |
|
Just yesterday I found out that I am going to the Ryder Cup
matches on Sunday. Yea. A friend of mine's cousin lives in
Rochester and owns a sports bar, he was able to score us
several tickets. I went to college in Rochester (RIT) and
have been to Oak Hill once, but I really do not remember
much of the course. Does anyone have any advice of good
holes to watch or just general watching techniques for the
matches. With only 6 to 12 groups (depending on the format)
it must be different than trying to watch a regular PGA event
with every hole having a group on it. I have been to several
PGA events so I some what understand what it takes to move
around and try to get views. But I have never been to a "major"
event like this with "huge" crowds.
Does anyone know if they will sell or even allow those "periscope"
type devices? I was considering toting around a small 2ft alum.
step stool(5 lbs max), but again will I get grief for this at
a "major".(ie they wont let me bring it in) It is no worse that
a folding chair but rules may be rules. Would rather not be
standing at the gate with it.
Crowds this morning(USA TV) looked VERY light, but I would expect
that with 8:00 tee times and a weekday, I sure things will pick
up this afternoon.
Any info would be most appreciated.

Today's USA Today has a Cup insert - very nice. Describes
every hole like a good yardage book you usually have to buy
when you play a top course.
So... for .50, you get a course guide!
Enjoy, should be a great time!

The Ryder Cup once again proved that there is little to choose between
the top players on the Euro and US tours. Fantastic golf played over
the 3 days, great shots, great putts, 2 holes-in-one and great tension
right till the end.
The European team proved the critics wrong. Written off by most as
having little or no chance, the team pulled together to produce one of
the best team perfomances seen in recent years. Helped by a few missed
putts on 18 (Strange and Faxon in particular), and by some exceptional
golf, the European team regained the Ryder Cup.
I can't recall ever seeing 2 holes-in-one in 1 competition before,
never mind the holed bunker shots, chip ins from off the green and huge
putts dropping.
For me, the best shot of the week was Faldo's 3rd to 18 on the final
day. After a bad drive into trouble, he could only knock the ball onto
the fairway leaving 100 yards or so to the flag. Knowing he had to win
his match to give his team a chance, he put his 3rd shot to 4 feet and
holed the putt. Sevvy also played some pretty amazing shots on the
final day against Lehman. Sevvy didn't hit a fairway on the front 9 but
was still level at the turn. Lehman was hitting every green in
regulation and must of wondered what Sevvy would do next.
Danny.
