1873.0. "GRASS driving ranges (Mass)?" by TOOK::FAULDS () Tue Apr 05 1994 15:41

    Hello,

    I'm feeling that golf itch these days as it gets nicer and nicer here
    in New England (finally).

    ** Does anyone know of GRASS driving ranges in the Eastern Mass area? **

    I live in Wayland and work in Littleton. Kimball's is great for
    a few lunchtime sessions but I yearn for the wrist-and-club-saving
    TURF driving range.

    Anywhere in the greater Maynard area would do. I have neen to Glen
    Ellen in Millis but that is a little far.

    Thanks,
    -Rob

    	Kimballs does have an area adjacent to the driving mats permitting
    	hitting off the turf. The Kimballs mats are also on wood providing
    	less impact to us arthritis sufferers. Stow Acres has a small hit
      	turf area next to their concrete based mats. If my memory
    	serves me right I thought Whirlaway in Methuen had a small turf
        area?

    Places that I practiced at last year with turf hitting areas were:

    South Meadow - Berlin/Northboro line at the rotary on Solomon Pond Rd.

    RiversEdge - Hudson off of Donald Lynch Boulevard between 495 and
    Hudson High School

    Marlboro (cant think of the name, it is across from the Navin rink at
    the old landfill). They have a nice turf area, and charge a yearly
    $10 membership to keep hackers off the turf.

1873.3Lancaster restricted to irons only for a while.ELWOOD::BERNARDWed Apr 06 1994 09:328
       If any of you in central Mass head down to the driving range in
    Lancaster just off rte 2 (Mechanic Street) they are only allowing irons
    to be used for the next week or so. Don't bother bringing your Big
    Bertha, they imposed the irons restriction due to wet conditions.
       Not sure if they have any grass tees. My finger is sore this morning
    from hitting a bucket of balls last night, gotta work on the grip.

1873.4Greenmeadow 100% TurfTEST59::DUNNINGWed Apr 06 1994 09:478
    It might be a little out of your way but Greenmeadow in Hudson N.H. has
    an all grass driving range......NO DECKS NO MATS......Just beatiful
    100% Turf........Excellent Golf course also 36 holes worth.
    It is located about 5 miles north of the Tyngsboro Bridge on Rte 3A,
    the entrance is adjacent to Petes Gun Shop......Sams Club and Wal Mart
    are also in close proximity.

    But right noW, Greenmeadow's driving range has mats out because it
    is still wet. I went out at noon yesterday and there was a line
    waiting to get on the mats.

    ** It is located about 5 miles north of the Tyngsboro Bridge on Rte 3A,

    I'm playing there this Saturday. I don't think I would rate the
    courses quite the same. The South (I get these mixed up) is pretty
    good, but the North course has a 3 or 4 holes that are really quite
    awful.

    re: .6

    When is the last time you played the North Course?????

    They were doing a lot of changes to the North course at the end of last
    season.....if my memory serves me correctly 15,16 & 17 are new.
    Compared to some of the "Cow Pastures" I've had the displeasure of
    playing on either course on Greenmeadow is luxurious.

    Oh Yeah...almost forgot....Hickory Hill in Methuen also has a 100%
    turf driving range.

    Played it early last November. Right about now, I would gladly play in
    a cow pasture, pattys and all.

I believe the range at Sterling Country Club is also all turf (no mats).
