Just an opinion of course but I don't think the extra money would
make any difference to his score. At the Novice level an of the rack
set of sticks is fine. You know, if you buy a $500 dollar set they
are not custom built. If he is average hight and addresses the ball
pretty much at standard he should not require anything other than a
standard set. I say start with a standard set of clubs and as his game
improves and he's ready to upgrade he can start to look at lie, length
of shaft, stiffness etc. One other point. When he does upgrade the more
popular clud manufacturers now offer at least three different lies and
all variations on stiffness of the shaft.
Nice Christmas present.

Hi Everyone;
another opinion;
Why not start out with clubs that "fit" you? It's so much easier to
learn the game, when your clubs fit your swing. All the tips you hear,
and read are based on your clubs fitting your swing. Your arms should
hang naturally ... if the clubs are too long, you'll be over-reaching.
First find out if your husband needs clubs that are non-standard...
Dick Fletcher can provide that for you, and I reccommend you allow
him to . He is quite good. And his methods make sense... he'll
provide data to fit your husband with ;
proper:
club length
club lie
shaft flex
grip size (ask him about this)
I don't
agree that height etc. (static factors) are the only gauge for
club specs... dynamic testing is crucial. Some tall players actually
have a flat swing. So at Dick Fletchers he'll have you swing the irons
and see what type of swing you have, while monitoring the club head
speed.
I think he charges around $15 for a swing analysis. It's worth it
to know you're buying clubs that fit "your" swing.
Once you determine your husbands needs, then you're free to shop
around for the best clubs (that match his specs) that $300 can buy.
Good luck;

| Oh No... 2 different opinions. I want to get him a set of irons (that's
all I can afford -) right now) to replace the ones he got at a flea
market. So anything is better than what he has now. I think I'm going
to leave it up to him, give him $300 towards new irons and he can
decide what he wants to do with it.
By the way, Dick Fletcher charges $50 to analyze your swing (from what
I understand it takes about 1 1/2 hours to do) but if you buy clubs
from him, he gives you a $25 discount.

re -1 : that's the deal. Arnie, Jack or Lee didn't start with custom
built sticks and they play pretty well.
