1815.0. "Me an' Elvis - We're History..." by MROA::VARLEY () Thu Dec 09 1993 15:43

Consistent with the recent Christmas vacation benefit offered by Herr
Palmer, I was afforded an opportunity to help make Digital appear more
profitable. Through the miracle of TFSO, I will be on holiday from DEC
    from 12/20 - forever.

After nearly 17 years, many of them as a golf noter, it's difficult to
put into words how much I've enjoyed all the commentary in here. I've
had a lot of laughs, and I've learned a lot. I've been constantly
amazed at the way Walta keeps on an even keel, as well as the swift
progress of Eunwha. Rich OConnor made me almost give up walkin'the dog,
and Kevin is just one of the technical guys who has provided me with
answers to tough questions. If I stop naming names, it's because I
can't name everyone - and I've got some special feelings about the
    whole conference.

I won't be around to babble about courses soon, but my good wishes will
be with each of you from Monoosnock to the Monterey Peninsula. I
thought I might get to California this winter to see my in-laws, but
wasn't certain. Right now, it looks like time is not an issue, so I
guess I'll find out if my contact at Bel-Air is still alive...

Low numbers and good times, y'all, and if you're ever near Crumpin-Fox,
stop in and say hello - I'll probably be in the vicinity...

    "Until that time..."

Good luck, Jack.

You have not only been one of the regulars in this establishment (I
can just hear noter calling out "Hey, Jack" the way the Cheers crowd
welcomed Norm), you've also been one the most articulate and
interesting contributors. You will be missed. Until now, I've
considered you among the luckiest of men...maybe you still are.
I hope so.

All the best to you, Jack.

If you're ever up in So. N.H. and need someone to keep you company on a
    round, give me a call.

    Jack,

As the American Indians say "My heart is filled with sadness". I don't
think that I can say it any better. I have "played" the shrines of golf
through your notes and have throughly enjoyed every minute of it,
all though I never will probably set foot on any of them.
I hope to enjoy another round (golf and beers) with you in the future
at the "Fox". May the future hold many birdies for you.
    Good luck.

    Hi Jack,

The years I've spent reading your thoughts and journy's have
been such a pleasure... The golf notes file has lost it's most
worldly contributer, and you will be sorely missed by us all.

I have always had a love for outdoors.... and our first/only
    meeting left me quite impressed.

There we were ... battleing the back nine of the Fox (and losing),
our group was perparing to tee off on one of the outtermost tee's
seemingly miles from the clubhouse. When out from the woods and onto
our tee lands Jack! I remember thinking "How'd he do that? " It was
as abrupt as Santa's approach into the living room. We all stopped,
and turned , and there he stood... with a fly rod in hand, and a
fish pouch around his waist. He calmly introduced himself and then
skipped immediately to explaing the best method of attacking the
par 5 15th? we were about to encounter. We all did our best to follow
his advice... but (we'll keep our day jobs) scrambled along. As Jack
walked along with us, he told us of some of the memorable shots
he'd seen ... but I noticed as we neared the coming water hazard/
fishing hole, Jack's interest veered sharply and he quickly scampered
to drop a line... we played out the hole which I believe was the 15th.
Jack met us on the 16th tee and was in his glory ( no he didn't land
    a fish)... the 16th is a MONSTER par 4 ~6000 yards . Unfortunately we
were playing from the tips, so it played around 6500 . The Fox has a
lot a great holes... but my personal favorite is the 16th .. You must
hit it looong off the tee, and you must be in the fairway, and you must
be on the left of the fairway. Once that is completed , you must crush
a cut 3 wood to an uphill bunkered green, dog-legged right and tucked
up into the woods (pray it's playing down wind). If I have the wrong
hole number please let me know... the number is the only thing my
    memory doesn't recall!
Jack is VERY proud of the Fox for it's toughness and seeing us
play the 16th for the first time from the tips, was making him very happy,
we felt overwhelmed to say the least.

Eunhwa and I will see you next season. It'll be a great time to
play 18 at the Fox with it's most admiring fan!

    	good luck Jack,

Ok you got me... so I have a tendancy to exaggerate :)

However.. after playing the hole you might "feel" its
yardage was closer to 6500 ! Than its posted 460? yards.

Good luck Jack. Like others mentioned, I've enjoyed "being on" the
golf shrines from your golf trip reports. I think next spring we'll
have to round up as many GOLF noters as possible and have a Jack Varley
DEC Memorial out at the Fox... I'm sure we could get a few to play.
    Right?

Thanks guys - I appreciate the nice thoughts. I'd probably leave out
the "DEC," but in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter.
As it turns out, my pal The Judge and I might not do our annual golf
trip this year. However, we plan to play Oakmont late in the summer
(unless, as he says, the member he knows dies). It's possible we could
take time to play one more course in the Pittsburgh area, maybe Laurel
Valley, if we can wangle it. Otherwise, I'll be stickin' close to The
Fox, and lookin' forward to seeing y'all there. FYI, I just saw a great
profile of WillowBend in "The Golf Club" magazine. I think I've really
missed something by not playing it.

    Low numbers all,

Good luck Jack, may your drives all be long and in the fairway, your
approaches right on the pin and your putts be "gimmees". I have
enjoyed your postings and the brief meeting we had when you sold the
Yonnex to Aaron Mak while we were in Nashua. Should you be in sunny
So. Cal, give me a call - a reminder it has turned cold as of last week
and you will probably want to wear long pants - but we Southern
California golfers are sturdy - we are still out there playing!

    God Bless.

1815.15Bye Guys...MROA::VARLEYFri Dec 17 1993 15:2616
It's probably fitting that this is my last note - last night my
fiancee got a call from an old friend who is a secretary to the guy
whose company used to own Riviera. She said that she's been there, and
she can get access just about any time. We're going West in June, so
we'll see if she can "do" this place after all. Hmmmm, Riviera and
Bel-Air, maybe there IS life after DEC.

Lots of good memories after 16 years, many of 'em directly related to
y'all. I'll cherish them, and wish each of you the best.

Kind of bothers me to review the progress of the SLT - Lucente makes
Lou Gorman look like Edward Deming...

    Happy Days,
