	ORLANDO, Fla. (UPI) -- Fred Couples fired a rare double-eagle 2
Thursday that launched the United States into the lead at the World Cup
of Golf.
	Picking up after a sluggish start at the Lake Nona Golf Club, Couples
and playing partner Davis Love III came to the 532-yard ninth two-under
par between them. By the time the defending champs walked off the green,
they stood atop the leaderboard at six-under.
	``First double-eagle I've ever had,'' Couples said, following his
opening-round 66 that tied France's Jean Van DeVelde for the individual
lead. ``I was just in the rough with a downhill lie and about 250 yards
to the pin ... I didn't even see it go in.''
	The U.S. wound up at 7-under 137, three strokes in front of South
Africa and France.
	Zimbabwe, featuring PGA Player of the Year Nick Price and Mark
McNulty, was alone in fourth at 141 -- a shot ahead of the Wales
(featuring Ian Woosnam and Mark Mouland) and Australian teams.
	The Aussies, with Roger Davis and Robert Allenby, started strong, but
stumbled down the stretch as did Japan and Argentina, both of whom
matched par 144.
	Germany, buoyed by a 69 from Masters champion Bernard Langer,
finished at 143 along with Ireland, Scotland and Sweden. Those four
countries were tied for seventh among the 32-team field. There are 22-
seeded teams draw from the performances of players and countries over
the past five years in this event.
	It was Couples, though, that stole the spotlight. He continued in the
same groove that characterized his game since the 1993 Ryder Cup.
	Having finished in the top 10 on the PGA Tour's money list for a
fourth consecutive season, Couples teamed with Payne Stewart and John
Daly to lead the U.S. squad to the Dunhill Cup title at St. Andrews,
Scotland. And just last week, Couples won the Kapalua International in
Hawaii.
	``The Ryder Cup really got me going,'' said Couples. ``I've continued
to strike the ball well since the Ryder Cup, but I've been putting
considerably better.
	``As far as the (World Cup's) slow play, I got used to it last year.
You've just got to pace yourself and avoid complaining, even when you
think you should be in the locker room having a Coke after four-and-half
hours.''
	Love's largest contributions came with a two-putt birdie at No. 9, a
birdie at the 309-yard 14th and a chip-in par at the 578-yard 15th.
Couples, who birdied the rugged 461-yard 16th and the 440-yard 18th.
	Like the U.S. team, the South African team of Ernie Els and Retief
Goosen started slowly before turning their game around at the 450-yard
seventh. Both birdied the tenacious par-4, Goosen from 15 feet and Els
from five feet.
	Els, whose ninth-place finish helped his country finish eighth in
last year's World Cup, birdied the eighth from two feet, the 15th on a
chip and putt and the 440-yard 18th with a mid-range putt.
	``The cross winds were fairly stiff at times,'' Els said. ``And the
course played fairly long (7,011 yards) by World Cup standards.''

	ORLANDO, Fla. (UPI) -- Defending champs' Fred Couples and Davis Love
III continued their streaky shotmaking Saturday at the World Cup of
Golf, transalating their skills into a three-shot advantage during a
third round.
	Merely an afterthought midway through this 32-team event at Lake Nona
Golf Club, New Zealand zipped from one-over-par to 10-under thanks to
Greg Turner's tournament-low 64 and Frank Nobilo's 69.
	``We've both had good years, and perhaps we came in here with our
expectations too high,'' Nobilo said. ``If you'd asked us Friday if we
had a chance to win though, I'd have said the only thing the only thing
we'll win is a trip to the bar. But the beauty of this event is how
quickly things can change.''
	Despite the birdie binge, New Zealand starts Sunday's final round
tied for third with Scotland and Australia, four strokes behind the U.S.
Second place belongs to Zimbabwe at 11-under.
	``We hadn't put together that great day, not like New Zealand had
today,'' Love said. ``The only thing we run into are these little lulls
where we're not concentrating.
	``We've had got spurts and bad spurts, but luckily our good spurts
have been really good and our bad spurts haven't been so bad. Each day
either one of us has shot at least one-under despite all the crazy
stuff.''
	Couples, trailing German Bernhard Langer (13-under) by four strokes
along with Frenchman Jean Van deVelde in the individual standings,
stated matter-of-factly that both he and Love definitely need to turn up
their games a notch.
	``We need to be better in the final round (than last year) because
they're more teams closer to us than last year,'' said Couples. ``And we
all know things can really change so quick.''
	Almost lost in New Zealand's blitz was Zimbabwe. Nick Price is a Lake
Nona member, a factor many figured made this country the favorite. Mark
McNulty, hasn't played the course an estimated 250 times like his
partner, but he's much more familar with the layout than most
competitors.
	Familiarity bred bogeys down the stretch Saturday as McNulty posted a
two-over 38 on the back and Price matched par to give them a 72 and 71,
respectively.
	``The course had changed complexion considerably over time,'' Price
said. ``The greens are quite a bit faster.''
	``Yeh, there's not a lot of grass on the greens in some spots and
they're tough to read,'' said Couples, following his 70.
	No team knows that better than Australia, which stood at 12-under and
trailed the U.S. and Zimbabwe by only a stroke at the turn. Like
Zimbabwe, Australia lost two shots to par on the back side with Robert
Allenby bogeying No. 18. Allenby is tied for fifth individually along
with Turner and Price.
	Conversely, Scotland benefited on the back side as Sam Torrance and
Colin Montgomerie posted a 33 and 35, respectively. Torrance wound up
with a 71 for his third consecutive sub-par round, and Montgomerie's 69
marked the third consecutive round he's improved on the previous day's
score.

	ORLANDO, Fla. (UPI) -- Germany's Bernhard Langer could have beaten
every other team, excluding the United States, by himself in Sunday's
$1.2 million World Cup at Lake Nona.
	His International Trophy individual section 16-under-par 272 total,
was one shot better than runners-up Zimbabwe as Langer closed with a 3-
under-par 69 which included four birdies and only his second bogey of
the tournament all week.
	It gave him a 3-shot victory over Fred Couples, one of the victorious
Americans in the team section, and ended a run of second place finishes,
having been a runner-up three times in the past.
	On Saturday his caddie had called his golf 'awesome' and though
Langer labelled it something less than that Sunday. He did admit he had
played his best golf since his victory in the European PGA Championship
in May, soon after his Augusta success.
	``I may just have played a little better at Augusta,'' said Langer,
who picked up $75,000 for his victory. ``My ball striking was nearly as
good this week, though, and to only drop two shots in 72 holes over a
tough course like this, is pretty good.''
	His only other dropped shot came at the 18th in the opening round and
his second bogey came at 16 in the final round when he hit an approach
through the green.
	By that time he had scattered any opposition, his four birdies in
seven holes from the eighth ensuring he kept his nearest rival Couples
at bay. He picked up his shots with some stunning iron-play, needing
just one big putt, a 20-footer to start his birdie run.
	``It was hot and humid early on and I couldn't get started,'' said
Langer. ``But I held on to make pars and then settled down for three or
four holes with a few birdies.
	``But I was always well ahead of Freddie and kept things in control.
I never really looked like letting myself get caught.
	``After being second three times it's nice to win the trophy.''
	Langer played in the event after rushing home to Boca Raton, Fla. at
the start of the week to seek treatment for his daughter Christina who
was scolded in an accident at his hotel.
	``I felt bad about playing here but I couldn't do anything for my
daughter, couldn't make her hand better. All I could do was give my wife
support but she understood. It was very worrying, though.''
	Although Langer clinched the individual title and produced a score
not bettered by any other team than the U.S., Germany finished eighth on
5-under-par 571 when his partner Sven Struver totalled 299, 4-over.
	``I felt for him and I tried to help and lift him as best I could,''
said Langer. ``It never frustrated me thinking if he could only play
reasonably we could win. That's golf.''

United States to a five-stroke victory Sunday in the final round in the
World Cup of Golf.
	Couples, a winner last week at the Kapalua International, fired a
four-under-par 68 and Love added a 70 to propel the U.S. to a 20-under
total -- five strokes better than Zimbabwe and nine ahead of third-place
Scotland.Australia, thanks to Robert Allenby's six-place finish, wound
up fourth at 10-under, followed by Spain at nine-under.
	Couples, Love and Germany's Bernhard Langer all shared a common bond
when they walked up the 18th fairway. Couples and Love enjoyed a six-
stroke cushion over the Zimbabwe team of Nick Price and Mark McNulty as
they strolled along the 18th at Lake Nona Golf Club. Preceding them by
several groups was Langer, the individual titlist by three shots over
Couples.
	Surely this wasn't what Couples and Love envisioned when they arrived
Sunday to defend their title. Not with the Zimbabwe tandem, who'd played
some 300 rounds between them at Lake Nona. Not with Australia, New
Zealand and Scotland showing more than enough punch to overtake the
Americans should they have stumbled.
	``It's been a great year for American golf,'' Price said. ``They've
won the Dunhill Cup. Corey (Pavin) won the World Match Play Championship
(beating Nick Faldo). I believe the Ryder Cup had a lot to do with that.
''
	Love expressed amazement over all his teammate has managed to do
recently.
	``Look at what Freddie's accomplished in the past three months,''
Love said. ``He played on the winning team (along with Payne Stewart and
John Daly) at the Dunhill Cup, played on the Ryder Cup (along with Love)
as well as the World Cup. I don't know if any golfer's ever done that.''
	``Nothing Freddie does surprises me,'' Price said. ``Heck he made a
double-eagle from the rough during the first round. He and Davis are
just like John Daly. They can overpower golf courses.''
	Although Price and McNulty both conceded that Couples and Love made
so many birdies they could afford a few ``insignificant mistakes,''
neither of the Zimbabwe two-some could hole enough putts to put
significant pressure on the Americans.
	Still, Love said he felt he and his partner were on the edge all day,
stumbling somewhat at the start of the back nine. But neither Price nor
McNulty could capitalize enough to slice the deficit to less than three
shots.
	The crowning blow to the Zimbabwe team came on the 578-yard 15th.
McNulty, considered one of the premier putters in the world, missed a
four-foot birdie putt, forcing Price to shoot at a difficult pin on the
461-yard 16th.
	That strategy resulted in a bogey for Price and the Americans'
cushion swelled to four shots.
	When Couples canned a birdie following a 180-yard, 8-iron on the
17th, the deficit was six shots. Only an 18th-hole birdie by Price, who
wound up tied for third individually, with South Africa's Ernie Els,
brought the lead down to five again.
	``It's just been a great year for American golf,'' Love said. ``But
it doesn't mean we're better than the European golfers. Maybe we're
starting to get back some respect, though.''
