Not only his game, but his attitude. The guy's an obvious
basket case. He plain-old didn't give a squat and was an
embarassment, imho. The other 3 just stayed out of his way
while he backhanded putts and hit shots to who_cares_where.
He shoots 49 on the back, for crying out loud. Is it too much
to ask to at least TRY when you're playing 18 of the best holes
in the country?
Btw, he also didn't care on that Long Drive / Trouble shot, etc..
show the other week.
He looks and act like Baby Huey.

| if you listened to the program they had said that daley had the flu and
about a 100 deg temp....most wouldn't even play under those
circumstances....

1798.3 | A Story Goes With This... | MSBCS::VARLEY | | Tue Oct 26 1993 09:25 | 25 |
| From what I heard, Daly was running about a 103 degree temp. Tough to
concentrate when you're traveling all day and night, playing extremely
tough holes and playing against 3 great players. Daly will be o.k. IMO,
he's good for golf - as long as he keeps maturing. He clearly didn't do
this for 50 grand, in fact, he was leading after 9 (co-leader...), so
if he was feeling better, he'd have been better able to concentrate.
An interesting sidebar - Davis Love at Merion showing everyone the
monster shower heads (which feel like someone just dumped a 55 gallon
drum of water on your head...). A few years back I played Merion, as
the guest of a guy I hadn't ever met. Turns out he had been chairman of
all of the different commoittees at Merion at one time or other, and
was chairman of the House Committee. He made a point of taking us
through the club, and he told us that when they redesigned the locker
room, they looked all over for the best shower heads they could find -
function, not looks. What you saw was the results. One more story, if
you'll forgive my ramblings (I have more...) - when we played the 11th
hole, the pin was right where you saw it on tv. Hit a 1 iron left
center, then pulled my PW into the rough left of the green. Now I have
to gouge it out on to a slick putting surface, going toward the brook.
Scraped it on to the green, and holed the putt for a 4. Atypical for
me, but I'll never forget it. Merion is the best I've seen in the
States...

| Aside from Daly obviously feeling under the weather, I believe that he
sometimes feels obligated to put on a driving show for the crowd.

Sorry, I missed that he was sick. Channel surfin', ya know?
But I didn't see any difference in behavior on the other
event...
Also, I played Pebble and Spyglass about 7 years ago. That #4
at Spyglass was one of the highlights. They played it as their
17th. Great hole!

| Didn't see the 1st 9, although I'm familiar with a couple of holes. I
was most impressed with Quaker Ridge and Spyglass of the holes I saw on
the back 9.

I hate to be tough on Daly. I know he is going through some rough times
trying to kick the booze and the wife thing. But, the guy was a mess
last week. If one of the other players didn't feel well I can't
imagine any one of them acting like a six year old. The guy either
has it or he dosen't. So far he has the skills to play with the
best players in the world some of the time. His attitude will
keep him from reaching his potencial. I am not a John Daly
the golfer fan but I hope as a person he can sort out his
life and begin to enjoy the life his golf skills have offered.

John Daly will go through the same metamorphisis that Davis Love
went through. Now he is in the early stages when his name is known
because he can hit the ball a mile, that is what is expected of him.
For a guy in his early 20's he is making plenty of money. He made alot
of top 20 appearances this year, enough to prove he is not a fluke and
has the ability to be around. Eventually, as he matures, he will
cut back the swing and settle down, ala Davis Love. I don't think
he has the potential of Davis Love, but he will improve.
Look at it from his point. He was a nobody a little over a year ago,
then in one weekend he became a national figure, known to basically
every golfer in the world. It wasn't just that he won, but that he
won by hitting the ball so far, it is expected of him. It will take
a few years to get by this, but I feel he will.

1798.9 | Go ahead.. be different John ! | INDEV1::SMITH | I need two of everything... | Fri Oct 29 1993 11:10 | 13 |
| -.8 I totally agree.
Daly has won a single tournament, yet is one of the better known
golfers in the world. We are proving it here in this file, we
constantly talk about him, about his good and not-so-good qualities.
He's a guy the fans want to see on the course. He's controversial,
but I think that is part of being John Daly.. right now. It's also
what keeps him 'well known'... good or bad it put $$ in his pocket.
Like -1 said, he was in the top 10/20 in several *key* events, so
he can play with the top guns...

| I think Big John has won two events. I recalling hearing and reading
that he was the first guy since Pavin to win an event in each of his
first two years on the PGA.
Even if it was one, though, that's one more that millions of other
hackers.

1798.11 | suspended | TPTEST::MOOK | Where are you between two thoughts? | Mon Nov 08 1993 10:07 | 12 |
| Did anyone catch Long John's act at Kapalua this weekend?
Beamen suspended him for the rest of the year - missing the Shark Shootout,
Skins Game, and J.C. Penny. He picked up after a missed putt, which would
have been his 3rd double in a row or something like that. He did finish the
round so his score would count for his amateur partners. Very big of him.
I'm sorry but I've lost respect for the guy. I used to think he was good for
golf and a refreshing change on the tour. No more. I've seen enough of his
careless play and unprofessional behavior.
Time to grow up John.

I agree!! He Needs to GROW UP!!! No Matter how bad he plays,
He doesn't realize that people pay good money and look forward
to him Smashing a 300 + yard drive even if it does go in the drink.
You don't get to see that too often. Unfortunately, He will lose
the respect of his fellow golfers much faster and become a side
show for the media if he doesn't smarten' up! Excuses... excuses...
Like someone wrote here earlier, He ought to enjoy the game of
golf and be thankful that his abilities afford him this luxury!
