1796.2 | IS SEVE A SPENT FORCE???? | GAOV10::TMCDONAGH | | Fri Oct 22 1993 09:02 | 17 |
| Is the living legend totally finished ,that is the question that has to
be asked after a shattering defeat in yesterday's world matchplay 1st
round.Again Seve's discomfort on the tee is leading to eractic and wild
drives is draining the will to play out of him.The 1st season on the
european without a victory for 16 years looms,to which Seve could only
respound that(I don't care).Nothing can be taken away for David Frost
he played exceptional golf but 7&6 Defeat illustrates that Seve is at
the lowest ebb in his career. The bad performances have left him very
tired ,but lets hope a good rest in the winter will see the master OK
but World and European golf should brace themselves for possible
retirement if things don't improve because this bad golf is making
the man very miserable.
Today's match should be Elkington v's Faldo an upset looks on the cards
Elkington's putter is working 6 birdies yesterday afternoons round
4 in 5 holes ,whereas faldo failed to impress in the Dunhill cup last
week.
Does anybody know the rest of today's line up and updates.

Corey Pavin became the first American since Bill Rogers in 1979 to
win the world matchplay title at Wentworth. Pavin defeated Nick Faldo
at the last hole in the 36 hole final round. Pavin had been 2 up with
3 to play but lost 34 and 35 before securing victory at the last. Faldo
found the trees with his second to the par 5 and after a penalty drop
could only make a 6 leaving Pavin 2 putts from 25 feet for the trophy
and 160k pounds sterling in price money.
In the semi-final against Colin Montgomerie, Pavin was dormie 3 but
lost the last 3 holes as Monty forced the tie into extra holes, Pavin
winning at the 37th. His victory follows on from the US victories in
the Ryder Cup and the Dunhill Cup last week.
Faldo's runners up cheque of 95k pounds takes his winnings over the
4million pounds mark worldwide, joining Greg Norman, Tom Kite and
Bernhard Langer.

| Pavin never ceases to amaze me. The guy always seems to play with a
good natured smile on his face and still be a tiger. He's got to be
all of 140 lbs. soak and wet, too. The guy just never gives up. I was
impressed with the way he hung in there playing against Baker's
fantastic round at The Cup. Couples, Cook, et al., could definitely
take a cue from Corey.

Got to agree. Pavin got a lot of bad press in Europe during the Ryder
Cup in the US 2 years ago. Can't remember what it was about, but he
made some pretty silly comments at the time. However, he seems to have
matured quite a bit and admitted after the match play that he has got
himself under control on the golf course, and as such is playing better
golf. His semi-final with Colin Montgomerie was embarrassing as Monty
continually lost his temper, snarling at fans, photographers and
kicking his bag after playing a bad shot.
Pavin has gained more respect in Europe recently. When interviewed, he
comes across as a pleasant and sporting golfer and his recent golf in
the Ryder Cup and the matchplay has certainly been very impressive.
Montgomerie on the other hand is not well supported by the general
public in Britain. He won over a million quid on his first couple of
years on the tour but is constantly getting bad press for his childish
behaviour on the course. He may be in the Sony Top 20 but he's way down
the list in the popularity stakes.
