1782.0. "GOLF s/w for I*M pc's" by ROYALT::BATTISTA () Tue Sep 28 1993 12:53

I*M pc golf software for the novice player and computer gamer.
I've looked at Microsoft Golf [floppy and CD versions], LINKS and
Links386PRO. All are good, I suppose, but I'm looking for some
    additional feedback from 'REAL' golfers.

Which of these packages, or others, will help me learn the basics of the
real game, so when I'm on the real course I'll at least know what to
do. [Actually doing it is yet another issue].

Yes, I've had a few lessons and some coaching and practice; this s/w is
intended as much as winter entertainment as instruction.

There is some hardware that you can tie into Links386Pro that
lets you actually swing a club in conjunction with the game.
I haven't tried it, but I've seen it demonstrated and sold
at the local PC shows. Don't know the cost.

I like Links386Pro. I've been stuck with just Harbortown for
about 6 weeks, but just picked up The Belfry. I suppose games
can teach you some strategy, but there's nothing like really
	playing golf.

I mean just because you can do perfect fades, drive 292 yards,
make Eagles on the 4th hole of The Belfry, etc. on Links386Pro,
certainly doesn't mean you can do it in real life!

I have LINKS386 Pro, and I think that it is a very realistic and
excellent way to learn the game. My girlfriend, who has never seen the
real game of golf knows it better than me, and I have played it for
years. I was interested in teaching her how to play, and it surprised
me how much she has learned by only playing it on the computer. I
think the computer can teach you a lot about the mental aspects of the
game. You have to learn how to read the greens, how to plan you
shotmaking for different approaches, how to compensate for different
conditions, as well as aspects of the rules. Golf is MUCH MUCH more
than hitting a golf ball. Sure playing golf on the computer will not
teach your body how to hit the ball, but you will be able to go out on
the course and play the game of golf regardless of how well you strike
    the ball.

And for those who want to fantasize playing the greatest link course
this side of the Atlantic, Access just released Pebble Beach Golf
Links course, nothing like the real thing but if you have played it,
you can let your imagination fly. Ah, the 7th, 8th and 18th!!!

I've been considering making a recommendation to Santa about LINKS386

    today?

1782.6I like Links380PROBUSY::PEASLEEMon Dec 13 1993 12:3611
I think so. I've tried World Class Leader Board [no contest], PGA Tour
and Accolade's Nicklaus s/w, the advantage being with the latter that
you can design your own course. I have about 7-8 links386 courses and
find them realistic and challenging, full of viewing alternatives,
a variety of set ups and competitive with recorded players and the
ability to record your round and submit it for tournament play [haven't
done this yet]. You can also save selected shots. I recommend it highly
in the DOS version but I've heard less enthusiastic responses about the
windows version [called microsoft golf I think].

I have every LINKS386 course and there are a bunch of them!
I realy enjoy the variety, not just the courses, the conditions! You
can play no wind, breezy, or very windy as well as slow, normal,
and hard greens. Pebble beach with max wind and hard greens is a
challenge. I've played most PC generated golf games but this is
    the best!!!!!! Definately DOS version!

Does any know if Links386/Pro is still available? I've been
looking for it without success for over a month now. I've
found MicroSoft Golf and Links, but not Links386/Pro.

Thanks for the responses. I found it. But, alas, I don't have
a super VGA monitor. I'll just have to wait for the weather and
    go golfing for real.

    John,

I am assuming that since your graphics is not super VGA, your PC is
at the most a 386. Redrawing the fairways and greens on Links386 is
    REALLY SSSSLLLOOOOWWWW on 386's.

Besides, Spring starts today, so forget about computer golf!
