| | 3/4 is o.k., but many people make the mistake of doing a 3/4 swing by
picking the club up and NOT turning their shoulders - like they would
on a full swing. BIG mistake! As long as you turn your shoulders, and
don't try to hit it harder (because of the "shorter" swing, you'll be
    fine. Just my opinion...

I think it depends on the comfort of the golfer. When I know that I have to hit a full shot
into a green. I tend to swing to hard and dip my shoulders causing me to chunk the shot. So this year
I worked on taking an extra club and swinging nice and smooth 3/4. Every once and a while I'll hit
the ball to far and be off the back of the green. I'd rather have a chip onto the green, then hit
another full shot after a chunk though. I figure with practice I'll learn how hard to swing to get a
certain distance.

I like to use both. In particular, if I'm in that testy range of 40 to 90
yards out from the green I'll use a SW thru 7 iron and a 3/4 swing for more
control. It works for me.

I have never been able to layoff on a swing (probably don't turn my
shoulders like .1 said) and when I really rip into one, I have a
tendancy to loose the ball way right (that slice thing).

What I have been doing this year, is take the longer of the clubs and
choke down a couple of inches, then swing with normal power, seems
    to have worked for me.

| | i agree with .5.

i often choke down on a club and take a full swing.
1/2 and 3/4 swings don't work for me, they turn into
1/4 and 1/8 swings, bordering on the dreaded 'chili dips'.

| | I have much more success ripping an iron from a tee than a lie on the
fairway. Therefore, I tend to take a full swing off a tee and a bit
less than a full swing from a normal lie. Trying to kill it from the
fairway usually ends up in a 'fat one' for me. Obviously, the ball
raised a bit up on a tee compensates for any dipping (or head moving
up) that I tend to do when I swing too hard.

| | I took a lesson from an older instuctor while on vacation last month.
He changed my full swing to a comfortable 3/4 swing. I have to admit
that I'm never in trouble(woods, water,...). The game is much more
enjoyable for me now. I did ask him about distance with this new
swing. He assured me thats its only a matter of time that my
confidence in hitting the ball takes over and the swing will in fact
increase thus allowing for a longer strike. I have to believe him.
Golf is a game of patience and confidence.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

    Jack,

I like the 3/4 swing and no shoulder turn comments, sitting back and
thinking about it thats what happens with me I start thinking the club
is plenty so no need to get a shoulder turn. shhhhhaaannnnnkkkk

I also played with our club champion the other week I asked him for
some tips on the very same subject he told me always to keep the club
head speed, choke down and turn.

    Thats Nice.

| | Check out Norman's swing this year. He's still pretty long and alot more
accurate with his shorter swing.
