1772.0. "CONGRATULATIONS BILL FLANNERY!" by ABACUS::LEARY (Only the good die young...) Tue Aug 31 1993 12:24

It is my dutiful esteemed pleasure to announce that my partner of
many a round of golf, Bill Flannery of MKO, did masterfully pull
off a HOLE-IN-ONE yesterday at Greenmeadow South #3. It was playing
about 140 or so and he used a 9 iron. He called out " I think it's
short!" with which the ball proceeded to hop off the fringe behind
the front right bunker and release right in the cup about 20 feet
away. AMAZING! Couldn't happen to a nicer guy!

I wonder where the 'unwritten' rule started which says the person who
got the hole-in-one buys the drinks! I never could figure this one out.
To me, it should be everyone else buying, not the other way around!
This game has many strange rules and customs..

I've never got an ace myself, nor have I ever seen one!

Being the true gentleman that he lies about being...Bill did buy
the round when we got back to the clubhouse. He was given an 800#
to call to register his ace and someone here at MKO mentioned to
him to say he played a Titleist for some reason or another. I didn't
quite catch the (w)hole conversation. He called the dubious # today
and it was an automated system that just asked for normal info
regarding when, where and such. I thought it would be much more
involved and have to be verified x times and blah, blah, blah.

I hope it is this easy if I ever get my time in the spot-light!

    You've got it easy ...

Here, in Germany, some insurance companies actually offer policies to
cover your getting a hole-in-one !! The expectation here is that you buy
champagne for EVERYONE in the clubhouse. Can you imagine what that would
cost if you got your ace during a Captain's Prize Competition, or some
such ?? - It'd certainly be no laughing matter - unless you had the afore-
mentioned insurance ! I know, it happened to me earlier this year.... :-(

Another expectation is that if you get 'a Lady' (ie. as a man, if your
tee-shot does not reach the Ladies Tee) then you have to buy a drink for
    each of your playing partners.....

I fully support one of the previous replies stating that it should be other
people who buy YOU the drinks. In the latter case (a Lady), how sad it is
for high handicappers (et al) to be placed in such ridicule.....

    However, when in Rome.....

Re - "LADY," y'all have a much more sophisticated penalty than the one
imposed by a convention called "Texas" golf, wherein the offender has
to play out the hole leaving no doubt as to his gender...

It's also been suggested that if a women out drives all the men in her
foursome the she play out the hole leaving no doubt as to her gender...

I watched a tv show called fantastic facts the other night it stated
the chance of a golfer getting a hole in 1 to be 33,610 to 1.

They better check my swing out that will put the chances further out.

It is my understanding that in Japan an ace is bound to put the happy
golfer several thousand dollars poorer, he/she has to give gifts to
every player, so almost every golfer has insurance.

    RE: LADY

When playing in college when a male didn't drive past the ladies tee,
he had to take his next swing with his pants down.

Larry, I was just down the road at Colgate - what I described as "Texas
Golf" was our version of the same penalty. Must have been the bad
    Winters that made us crazy...
