| Hi Bengt,

Yes indeed. I'm staying at a hotel in Howth, just outside of Dublin.
The good thing about this hotel is that it has 18+9 regular holes, a 12 hole
par 3 course and a pitch and putt course. Golf is included in the cost of
the room, so needless to say I try to get as many rounds in as possible.
The 18 hole is a good challenge due to its length. The courses are kept
in very good shape in spite of many people playing during the summer.
As for the Irish people, they're the friendliest I've ever come across.
Oftentimes I tee of by myself, but after a few holes have joined up with
people either in front or behind me.
While on vacation on Ireland I played some really good courses on the north
west coast.
Nairn-Portnoo : Not very famous, but a very nice links course. Electric
fences around the greens due to grazing cows. Free drop from cow patties.
Donegal Murvagh: Another super links course. Tough when the wind is blowing.
County Sligo (aka. Rosses Point): Challenging links course. Very good if a
little worn at places.
Enniscrone: Hosted the Irish Close amateur championship a couple of wees
ago. Great links on the back nine!
Westport: Mainly parkland course. In excellent condition.
Connemara Ballyconeely: Not really links but still close to the howling
winds of the ocean. Very long into the wind. Not terribly exciting.
Galway Bay: The new Christy O'Connor course. Had only been open a month
but given a little time it will most likely be up there with hosting
the Irish Open. Maybe a little too 'manicured' for my liking with man made
ponds.
To summarize, I liked the links courses the most. I'd love to go back
and play Donegal and Nairn-Portnoo again. These were not very expensive
either with day green-fees in the range 12-15 IR.
The well-known courses in Dublin really know how to charge visitors.
Portmarnock want IR 57 on week-ends. Ouch!
I'm going back to Dublin again on monday, golfing when I can.
Cheers, Gsta
