1690.0. "Sturbridge, Ma Courses?" by USPMLO::DESROCHERS () Tue May 04 1993 09:28

Are there any nice courses in the Sturbridge, Ma. area that
are also reasonably priced? That exit off the Mass Pike is
a good mid-point meeting place for me and folks from the
    	Chicopee area.

    	Any suggestions?

    	Tom

HEMLOCK RIDGE AT (508) 347-9935 IS LOCATED IN FISKDALE. VERY NICELY
MAINTAINED 9 HOLE COURSE. A LITTLE HILLY BUT CHALLENGING AND SCENIC -
    ALSO, REASONABLY PRICED.

Chicopee CC is a fine course and it is priced very reasonable during
    the week, around $10-12.

Yes, I sure know that! That's where we usually meet and it was
the first course I ever played! But since it's an hour for me
and 5 minutes for them, I wanted something in between.

    Hi,

You could also try Heritage on Rt. 20 in Charlton. It's 18 holes
and hilly, especially 18. They have an early bird special, too. I've
been told that the course is in pretty good shape this year. Others
that I can think of are Bay Path in East Brookfield, Quail Hollow in
    Oakham, and Dunroaman in Gilbertville.

Dunroamin is a 9 holer, and not much of a design, but the "Vesper
Bentgrass" greens are (at least used to be - haven't been there for a
bit) OUT OF THIS WORLD. Depends on what you're looking for, but
Dunroamin is inexpensive, pretty, and has nice folks.

    Hi Jack,

A little off the subject but... speaking of Vesper, I just played
a Pro-Am there Monday. The greens were UNBELIEVABLE. The pro there
said they're the best he's seen it ten years. They had a crew spend
the winter shoveling off the covered greens! What a place.

We ended up taking 2nd place, missed first by a stroke. Quite
hard to take, considering I missed a 3 footer on 16, and the Pro and
"C" player three-putted 17... we were quite upset. But happy to place
    in the money.

The Pro we played with Brad Durrin won the low Pro, shooting a
    par 72.. 5 birdies and 5 bogies.

    	Vesper is sooooooooooooooo nice.

    	thanks Walta

Walta, great to hear a story about one of our New England "shrines." I
didn't know you were playing Vesper, but I'd have predicted that you'd
like it. I think the par 3's are the best part of the course - that,
and, of course the greens. You can almost hear your footprints growing
back into shape... By the way, #17 is a TOUGH par 3...

    Best,
