1647.0. "Basllesteros to quit...?" by YELBUS::DSMITH (ONE THOMAS BROLIN...) Fri Mar 12 1993 05:33

Seve Ballesteros may be forced to quit golf due to constant severe back
problems. He was forced to quit after the first round of the Majorca Open
where he shot 79 including 43 on the back nine. This is the first time he
has had to quit during a competition.

Ballesteros has had these problems since 1988 and says the trouble, at
the bottom of the spine is getting worse. He is in consistent pain and
sometimes feels an extra sharp shock, even when putting.

He has recently went through probably his worst spell as a pro golfer,
finishing last and 32 shots behind Nick Faldo in the World Championship
in Jamacia. Since then he has missed the cut in tournaments in Cadiz and
  Singapore.

He has withdrawn from next weeks Portuguese Open and is doubtful for
  next months Masters in Augusta.

    Danny.
