She was askin' for over 100K. Seems she has developed quite a polo
habit. Traveling the world with the rich and famous cost money.
Fred got a good deal.

| Fred claims that the divorce is over her polo habit. However, the
affair he had probably caused the divorce to start and the was the
reason for the spousal support judgement.

| She wanted $118,000 during the polo season. The judged allowed
$52,000. She has her own string of polo ponies in Florida and rumor
has it, a string of polo players. Guess when Freddy found out she
wasn't just playing polo that things went down hill.

I've seen her a couple of times on TV during his matches. IMHO she's
no day at the course. At least 50k worth. If she was the one who
was <supposedly> doing the wild thing with someone other than Freddie
then why does he pay for her mistakes. I'll never figure out this
system.....

Not that all this is any of our business, but I believe that a few of
the notes back stated that Mr. Couples wasn't so clean himself. If he
is was very lucky he didn't have to give her half of everything that
he had earned while they were married. I wouldn't wine too much over
600k for a year or two when he is making millions.

| IMO, if she did it, he walks, if he did it, he pays. Unless there are
children... Supporting her POLO habit ? Gimme a break ! What does he do
if all of a sudden he starts shooting 78 all the time, and wins no
cash ?

Well, he didn't do that bad in L.A. finishing second, and if he had
been a little hotter he would have given Kite a run for his money.
But in the personal side, regardless of any affairs, Couples
character doesn't seem to me like one who would get very excited
about running around in the Polo circuit and his wife is really into
it. He has been quoted as being a coach potato when he is not
playing/practicing golf (and he's been critisized for not practicing
that much). Maybe now he'll find the time/mindset.

He probably does have to give her half of his millions. The annual
stipend is probably alimony.

| Hi,
Does anyone have the details of what caused the divorce???
I am a Freddy Fan and think he's one of the best to come to the game
in a longtime. His attitude is outstanding and he is a true gentleman
on the course + he's a big hitter and that's always exciting.
Paying his ex $600K a year + likely 1/2 of his net worth is ridiculous
as everyone knows nothing is for sure in this game. Hopefully LYNX
is paying him big bucks for his BOOM BOOM Driver and advert.
That would be enough to give anyone the YIPS !!!!
Thanks in Advance, Jim

With product endorsements, personal appearance fees, along with
healthy top 10 checks every week, Couples probably earns closer
to 3-4 million a year. Just a guess. I know Palmer and Nicklaus
are in the 7-8 million a year range. Don't fret over Fred so
much. He'll do ok.

| In a article in Golfweek, it stated that the amount Fred had to give
was based on a disposable monthly income of 300,000. In other words,
Fred is paying her roughly 16.6 % a month. This isn't all that steep.
If he were in Mass. it would probably be a lot worse.

1638.16 | | NEWPRT::JOHNSON_DO | | Wed Mar 10 1993 16:20 | 6 |
| The problem is that number was just for the support of her polo
habit...not alimony. And was specified as "during the polo season".
What about baseball season or trout season. Hope she doesn't have too
many seasonal habits.

The questions still remain:
What caused the divorce?
What is the specific settlement criteria?
Anyone with concrete information... a reply would be appreciated.
A side note is that now Freddy resides out of the Bahamas (sp?), rather
then West Palm Beach, Fla.

From all reports a summary would be.
Fred got sick of Debbie's spending habits. He is a notorious
tightwad. Fred started 'dating' someone else. Debbie got mad,
Freddie got mad, they filed for divorce. Fred makes big money.
Debbie spends big money, so Debbie gets big money in a divorce
settlement. Fred starts winning on the tour again, Debbie
starts appearing on the trash news programs, and we all have
something to talk about during this long, cold, snowy, miserable
winter.

| so let me get this straight.
if you get the chance to marry someone with a pretty good
income, you should establish a serious spending pattern,
with an eye toward future divorce preceedings. that way,
come the divorce, you get big money.
is her reward tied in any way to how much he earns?
if he only earns $200K one year, does she still get
$50K a month.

| re -.1
Your comments are more accurate than what would seem logical to most
people. Divorces are usually tied to not only the current income, but
future income as well. In Fred's case, I'm sure her lawyer's argument
included his relatively young age, earnings potential, etc. If in fact
his income drops, then it would be up to him to go back to court and
try to change the terms of the divorce. If it goes up more than what
had been estimated, and if any children were involved, then she could do
the same.
As far as spending habits are concerned, the courts look at
the lifestyle that was "allowed" during the marriage, and generally
attempt to keep as much of that lifestyle in place, whether it seems
excessive or not. So it goes.
