1631.1 | Excitement is building | WALTA::LENEHAN | Do all the good you can | Thu Feb 11 1993 12:47 | 11 |
| Hi Dan,
Good info !
Gee what's with Jose' and Seve??
They'll probably get on the team regardless of their position on
the list... I'd hate to see either of them sit it out ! Anyone
know the reason/status of their current play?
thanks Walta

| Hi,
The reason Ballesteros is so far down the rankings is that he has
decided to play in only one tourmament in 4 months.I think he might
be expecting to get a wild card ( if his form returns ).
Another reason why seve aint playing is that he has completely lost
his game. ( I can relate to that part )
A recent report stated that he was hitting his drives poorly and
that his short game was non-existant.
I think that he will return a better player,he is the type of player
we will need to win back the ryder cup.
I think that ollie has just disappeared of the face off the earth.

| Hi,
You can purchase tickets from the R+A at St Andrews, they will post
them to you.I assume you wont be picking them up in person.
If you purchase tickets for the three days there is a small discount
and if you buy tickets now there is a further discount.I seem to recall
they were Selling them for about 90 pounds for the three days or 30
pounds daily.

Date: Sun, 15 Aug 93 18:17:12 PDT
TOLEDO, Ohio (UPI) -- Two first-time players, John Cook and Davis Love
III, clinched berths on the U.S. Ryder Cup team by virtue of their play
at the PGA Championship over the weekend.
Cook finished tied for sixth in the PGA at seven-under par 277, and
Love was deadlocked for 32nd at one-under par 283. Despite not making
the cut Friday, Chip Beck and Jim Gallagher had accumulated enough Ryder
Cup points to withstand the challenge of the PGA field and they
qualified for the final two automatic berths on the American team.
Captain Tom Watson will round out his squad Monday morning by
announcing his two wild card selections.
Paul Azinger, Fred Couples, Tom Kite, Lee Janzen, Corey Pavin and
Payne Stewart had already clinched the first six berths on the team.
The Ryder Cup will be staged Sept. 24-26 at The Belfry in Sutton
Coldfield, England.
``I don't know anything about The Belfry, other than hearing about
No. 10 and No. 18. I've ordered tapes of '85 and '89 (when the Ryder Cup
was played at The Belfry), and I want to watch those and see if I can
get a feel for it before I go over,'' said Cook, a first-time Ryder
Cupper.
``I did represent the U.S. in the World Cup and the World Amateur
Team, so I know what representing the U.S. means. It's important to me,''
Cook added. ``It's a friendly rivalry, but it's very fierce. It will be
very competitive. When you walk off the green, you're going to shake
hands and smile at each other. That's just the way it is. But it doesn't
mean we don't want to go over there and shut them out.''
The Americans defeated the European team, 14 1/2 to 13 1/2, in the 1989
Ryder Cup play at Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

Subject: Floyd, Wadkins chosen to American Ryder Cup team
Date: Mon, 16 Aug 93 7:40:35 PDT
TOLEDO, Ohio (UPI) -- American Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson Monday
named Raymond Floyd and Lanny Wadkins to fill out the 12-man team that
will attempt to retain the cup next month against a European squad in
England.
The other 10 spots on the team were made final Sunday with the
concluding round of the the PGA Championship -- the last of the
tournaments at which Ryder Cup points were available.
``My chief criteria was who had the heart and who had the guts,''
Watson said in announcing his two choices. ``No matter what the task,
they will not give up. These two guys will step between a bullet and me.
``Europe is going to have a strong team, but we have a stronger team.
''
Floyd, 50, became the oldest American to play in the Ryder Cup two
years ago when he was selected by captain Dave Stockton to compete on
the team that won back the cup in the matches played at Kiawah Island,
South Carolina. Prior to those matches, Europe had held the cup since
1985.
It will be the eighth Ryder Cup appearance for both players, tying
the American record owned by Billy Casper. The rest of the American team
will be made up of newly crowned PGA champion Paul Azinger, Tom Kite,
Chip Beck, Payne Stewart, Corey Pavin, Fred Couples and Ryder Cup
rookies Davis Love III, John Cook, Lee Janzen and Jim Gallagher, Jr.
Two years ago, Floyd teamed with Couples to win two matches in what
turned out to be a 14 1/2-13 1/2 American victory. Floyd lost his singles
match in 1991 to Nick Faldo. Wadkins, meanwhile, won two matches teaming
with Hale Irwin, halved a match teaming with Mark O'Meara and defeated
Mark James in their singles match.
The race for spots on the European team will continue for two weeks.
The top nine spots on the European team are automatically awarded and
captain Bernard Gallacher will then select three wild card members.
The top nine spots in the European points race are currently held by
Faldo, Colin Montgomerie, Bernhard Langer, Barry Lane, Mark James, Sam
Torrance, Constantino Rocca, Peter Baker and Jose-Maria Olazabal. If
Rocca holds onto his spot, he will become the first Italian to play in
the Ryder Cup.
Ian Woosnam is 10th on the list, but would likely be one of
Gallacher's choices if he does not make the top nine. Gallacher is also
expected to choose Seve Ballesteros to the team despite Ballesteros'
recent slump.

Below is the final Ryder Cup Standings for the U.S.A. The PGA
Championship did not change the order or the golfers in the top 10.
(Though Azinger did pass by the ineligible Norman and Price). The
last column in the golfers record in Ryder Cup. I guess Watson
has already named the other two choices. Has anyone heard?
New Team members are: Lee Janzen, John Cook, Davis Love III and
Jim Gallagher Jr. Thats a 1/3 of the team. Right now Europe has
3 golfers that are in their top 9 with no Ryder Cup experience.

Has anybody heard Olazabal's plans for the next two weeks.
In the past he has stayed in the U.S. to play the International
And the NEC World Series of Golf (The two tournaments he has
won in the U.S.). With being on the bubble for Ryder Cup, does
anyone know if he plans on returning to Europe before the end of
the month?

Found you!!!!!
How are you all , looking forward to the cup???
I certainly am, as it creates great sporting excitement and viewing
entertainment which is tremendous especially as there is no money
involved just pride and passion (should be what sport is all about
anyway, eh??)
Well this note took some finding and as I said in the other Ryder Cup
note 1745 I knew there must be other people out there as interested as
me if not more in this competition, so just to reitterate(sp) a few
comments before, whose the Swede playing??
and here's to the best team winning and a great competition.
and to Bernard knocking in that putt this time for a European win!!!

News in,
that Sam Torrance might not be able to play because he's failed
a medical exam, anybody shed any light on this..
This is starting rumours especially over here that Ronan Rafferty
might be called in, I suppose this is allowed??
If this is what happens the team will be truley European which is only
good for the game as it will provide widespead interest and support
for the first time here throughout Europe!! The only real issue is
will everybody be able to understand each other especially the Scots
(only joking) I suppose a cheer or a clenched fist for truiumph is the
same in any language. This also brings up again the location for the
comp over here as Seve has already stated that he feels it isn't right
that its always at the Belfry and says Spain or somewhere else should
host it, I suppose he has a point now the team is Europe after all, the
only maybe reservation I would have is the support for it might not be
there in other countries but I would say that wouldn't I as I'm English.
All European Team
English 4
Spanish 2
Scottish (1)2
Welsh 1
German 1
Italian 1
Swedish 1

| There was a piece about Torrance in the papers at the weekend.
As I remember, he picked up a bizarre injury a couple of weeks ago when
he "walked into a flower pot", or something like that after a
competition (can't remember the exact details). I think he had bruised
ribs or something and he pulled out of the next couple of events to
recover.
The article had a lot of speculation about whether Gallacher would pick
him or not as a wild card if he got overtaken on the list while he was
recovering.

| Although The Belfry seems nice, IMO there's a whole hell of a lot of
courses in the British Isles that are much better - and steeped in
tradition worthy of this event. Perhaps the course is like our TPC
courses, and was selected to let the British PGA (whatever) make some
cash. I don't think this was what Sam Ryder had in mind...

Jack, I disagree about the course selection. For the Ryder Cup, they
could play on any course. What makes this event unique is the player
against player, team against team competition.
Augusta National *is* the Masters
A windswept Links course *is* the British Open
The players are the Ryder Cup

Subject: Ryder Cup star Bernard Langer suffers pain in neck
Date: Thu, 2 Sep 93 9:51:59 PDT
CRANS-SUR-SIERRE, Switzerland (UPI) -- With the Ryder Cup matches only
three weeks away, Bernhard Langer, one of Europe's key players was
forced to withdraw from the European Masters Thursday with a stiff neck.
A flareup of Langer's recent neck problems left Europe with two of
their stars questionable for the matches that will be played Sept. 24-26
at The Belfry Golf Club in Sutton Coldfield, England. The Europeans will
be trying to regain the Ryder Cup from the United States, which won it
two years ago.
In addition to Langer's problems, European team member Sam Torrance
has been nursing a badly bruised sternum.
Langer, who first began to complain of the neck problems prior to the
U.S. Open in June, withdrew Thursday in the opening round after seven
holes.
``It started coming back at the end of last week and, although I've
been having treatment, it's got worse every day,'' said Langer, 36. ``I
really don't know how long it will be before I'm fully fit again. I
can't look into the future, but in June it took three or four weeks to
be better.
``Nobody is sure what it is and I don't know how I did it. I was
examined and my vertebrae were out of place, so the nerves were pinched
and it got inflamed.
``I'll fly home now and get more treatment from a specialist. It's a
big disappointment because I've been playing so well.''
If either Langer or Torrance cannot play, Ronan Rafferty would be
added to the European team. And if both of them were knocked out, Mark
Roe would become the second substitute.
``Hopefully we will not need anybody on stand-by at The Belfry,''
Langer said. ``But if the match had been today, I would not have played.
''

Hello Jack, and Rick and Anybody else
While I agree with both your sentiments in .15 /.16 that wasn't
the question that I was asking, which was, should and could the
Ryder Cup when played over here be played in other countries rather
than just England, the obvious answer is yes, but would there be
the finacial backing and support/interest anywhere else????
On the injury front:
We could probably replace Sam (no disrespect to him meant) but
it will be a big loss if we lose Bernie lets hope he fit eh?
With Langer suspect (maybe) he won't be able to rewrite history and
hit the winning putt for Europe this time that will be a shame as
I'm sure that putt in the US last time still haunts him.
Now its the weekend

1631.20 | | MSBCS::VARLEY | | Fri Sep 03 1993 14:40 | 20 |
| The format does make the Ryder Cup unique, and yes, they could play it
at Green Meadow, and it would still be the Ryder Cup. I merely suggest
that the RC deserves a great golf course, with a history befitting the
importance of the event. I'd sure as hell rather see it at Sunningdale
(Old), Portmarnock or Carnoustie than the Belfry, or at Shinnecock
Hills, Merion or Olympic than Kiawah island. Don't get me wrong, Kiawah
was Double-tough, and the course interested me, but let's put this
event on a course that has value established over time.
As far as having it in Europe (IMO), forget it! They shouldn't have
changed the damned rules to begin with! Sure, it makes the British side
more competitive, may have even "saved" the event, but I despise the
growing tendency to keep "improving" things like this to suit
somebody's idea of what's better.
I dunno, maybe Sam Ryder stipulated it could change at the discretion
of others, could be. Hey, let's let the South Americans, Canadians and
Australians play for the U.S., and draw lots for the South Africans...

1631.21 | Good article in Golf Digest | KOALA::DEFELICE | | Thu Sep 09 1993 10:28 | 12 |
| Great, incisive article on the Ryder Cup in this month's Golf Digest,
written by Johnny Miller. Also included, is a profile of each player
(Miller on the Americans and Alliss on the Brits/Europeans). Some
interesting bits of strategy and potential match-ups for the Cup. What
to look for, and what you don't see. (e.g. Seems as though Azinger and
Seve played quite a match in the past where each tried to rock the
other's game.) Some other bits that countered with past incidents of
great sportsmanship. Apparantly, there is more pressure to play for the
Cup for personal pride and 'for the team' than any of the Majors.
What a great event, I envy all of you who can get out to see the Cup.

Yeah, the Ryder Cup articles are interesting. Here's a part
that really surprised me - it concerns making that final
putt to win or lose...
"The second occasion was in 1953 at Wentworth when all Britain
needed was one point in either of the closing two matches.
First Peter Alliss and then Bernard Hunt in turn folded under
the pressure, each missing short putts on the last hole. The
former gave rise to the well-known expression
"Nice putt, Alliss".

I do not recall the names of Peter or Bernards opponents in 1953
however I do remember one of the greatest moments in sport which far
exceeds any missed putt that being Jack Nicklaus conceding a putt on 18
for a half to Tony Jacklin.
Bernard Gallagher recently wrote "I would like to think I could walk on
the 18th and concede a putt like the one Bernard Langer had rather than
see someone miss"
Stiil it should all be over by 15 this year !

This was a very exciting Ryder Cup. 6 of the singles matches went to
the 18th hole. Faldo was the best player of the match. Peter Baker
is definitely going to be a force on the U.S. tour should he decide
to come over. 25 years old with nerves of steel.
Best shot - Faldo's ace on the 14th hole.
Turning point of the match - Beck and Cook vs Faldo and Montie.

1631.43 | MORE ON PETER BAKER | LARVAE::POTT | | Mon Sep 27 1993 11:45 | 27 |
| re.41
One additional piece of information on Peter Baker, which may not have
been reported on the other side of the pond (it was kept secret over
here until today). Apparently both he and his wife spent an anxious
night before the final day with their baby daughter who was rushed to
hospital with suspected meningitis. Baker returned to his hotel room in
the early hours of the morning only managing to grab a couple of hours
sleep and only feeling able to play when his wife and daughter returned
to the hotel before play was due to start (it was a "scare" caused by a
viral infection).
With this in mind, I think it makes his performance against one of the
toughest match-play golfers in the world, even more impressive. I hope
his personal success in this years Ryder Cup, acts as a springboard to
a great career.
One last footnote, the whole drama around Baker's daughter, apparently
pulled both European and American teams together, in their shared
concern for her safety. The effort that a number of the Americans in
particular, went to, in offering support to the Baker's, was by all
accounts very touching.
It enabled the final day to be played in exactly the right spirit and
allowed all the petty nonsense around insults etc. that the tabloids had
been stoking up all week, to be kicked well and truly into touch.

of this magnitude. The Ryder Cup and Walker Cup are HUGE to me, like
The Open and the U.S. Open.
The Belfry is a fine course, but it really is American-like. Hell, I
saw more water there than I have combined in 20 rounds or so in
Scotland/Ireland (unless you count the ocean - which is everywhere. The
event desrves an established venue.
Peter Baker can flat-out ROLL it! Lots of great play, and hats off to
Rocca for coming back as far as he did. I still think Wadkins should
have played. Was it a clear victory ? Yes. Was it a "Project Beating, a

First, I have to say Congratulations to the U.S. team. as well as
the Europeans. There were many fine moments throughout the entire play
that will only benefit the game of golf. In general (only seeing it on
the tube) that the crowds really enjoyed themselves and were well
mannored.
I viewed many fine moments of sportsmanship on both sides. There were
only a few accounts of questionable "golf etiquette" on each team.
Now, bias comment. If someone had told me on Saturday morning that the
USA would retain the cup...well, let's just say I would'nt have bet
alot of money on them. Right, wrong or in-different the USA showed
some real gutt checks in the final round to pull it off.

Jack,
I think Wadkins sitting out helped the U.S. team. Lanny probably figured I've been
to many Ryder Cups and was a captains choice pick. So by volunteering to sit he gave some of
the younger americans a little boost of confidence. It also gave the team something to rally
around, Let's win for Lanny.
IMO the key player in the Ryder cup was Chip Beck. On Saturday he almost single handedly
beat Faldo/Montgomerie. Yes, he was teamed with John Cook, but Cook struggled on the back
side during a tough match. Then on Sunday to come from 3 down with 5 to play, unbeliveable.

1631.58 | More Cup Stuff | MSBCS::VARLEY | | Tue Sep 28 1993 11:49 | 30 |
| Lots to think about. Last year I vociferously upbraded Beck for not
going for the green on number 15 at The Masters. In retrospect, whether
he won or lost the Masters is important only to Beck himself - it was
his choice. But when he played for his country, he was an absolute MESS
(Amero-speak for someone who is double tough, or a very strong
competitor). I'm back on the Beck-Wagon.
Although I hate the guy (Seve) in Ryder Cups, because he absolutely
KILLS us, seems arrogant and employs a touch of gamesmanship, I felt
sorry for him on Sunday. That was not the REAL Seve, and I'm not taking
anything away from Jim Gallagher - he played well enough to win anyway.
I hope folks won't remember Seve as he was in this Cup, but as he has
been over time - one of the true greats - and I say that from my
heart! Bernard Gallacher knew Seve was off his form, but he still thought
Seve could "suck it up" for one last hurrah on Sunday - and if I were
Gallacher, I'd have done the same thing.
Langer also was a bit off, but Kite played wonderfully. Has anyone ever
seen Mark James and Sean Connery in the same room... Azinger was
inconsistent, as was Couples. Janzen conceded a putt (very sportingly)
on 18 that I'd have liked to seen the other guy make... Rocca's putt on
17 was a HELL of a lot easier than Langer's putt at Kiawah. I'd like to
see the Cup played at Portmarnock, Royal Portrush or Royal County Down,
although the last 2 have kind of weak finishing holes. County Down is
the best I've ever seen.
I'm gonna try and play Oak Hill before the Cup matches - maybe next
year, and if I do, I'll file a report.

I have seen alot about Beck's great comeback to save the day, and
I must admit after his screw up in the Masters (they even commented
on it during the Ryder cup), I have little respect for him. With
that in mind, I don't think his comeback on Sunday was all that
much to do with him. He was 3 down with 5 to go and caught up.
How? The other guy bogeyed 3 holes. Beck parred them. Sure he handled
the pressure to make par, but these guys should be making par with
their eyes closed. Was it a good performance? Yes. Did he catch
up because he turned it on and played great? No. The other guy
lost it under the pressure. Give Beck credit for hanging in, but
he still has not shown the instinct to make it big. Even his
post match interview gave me this impression. He said something to
the effect of he just wanted to hang in and wait for the other
guy to leave the door open. At that point he should have been
firing for the flag and getting birdies, not counting on the other
guy to make bogey. Same as the masters. "I will just be safe and hope
he falls down".
Great cup matches. I only saw Sunday, but I enjoyed it alot.

| Interesting how different people see the same event and reach a
different conclusion.
It would seem to me that the success of the strategy that beck used in
ryder cup affirms his strategy in the masters. especially in that it
is consistent.
I have seen many successful competitors in all the sports favor a
strategy of patient, consistent play, putting pressure on the opponent
and capitilizing on mistakes.
Beck probably did make a tactical error in masters but more in
judgement than in nerve.

The reason we Europeans look back negatively on the events at Kiawah in
1991 is that when a drive is badly in to the rough it should not
re-imerge back on the fairway re( hale Irwin on 18 v's langer). The
difference honesty is alive in Eurpoe, and not a myth like it is in America.
The reference to Woosie's wife at Augusta in 1991 was a subtle
attempt to show disgust at the gestures and general bad manner
displayed towords her while following her husband to victory ,it's
a pity you Americans can't take defeat as good as you can take victory.
I found the smile on Tom Kite's face rather revoulting compared to the

| Re: a couple back, also - I sure don't approve of some of the Kiawah

went to see an event - like a rock concert - not people who understood
golf. As far as the "honesty lives (only) in England," and the
implication that British fans act appropriately, do the words "soccer"
and "bovver" ring a bell ? Over here, we don't have to ban fans from
one city from attending a sporting event in another city, or from our
country to another country - at least, not yet... No offense, but let's
say we want to have a World Cup Match in a neutral city, like Milan,
involving the Scottish team and a team from, say, Holland. Two
countries that are undoubtedly sophisticated and well behaved.
Should be no problem, right ?
I guess my point is that the previous response I mentioned was an
overreaction, and one that was not very enlightened. I might have
responded in kind with "yeah, and by the time you read this last

Oooops don't really want to get involved in this personal fight, but I saw the
incident on the BBC too.
Can't remember the year (6-7 years ago I think). Not sure of the event
(matchplay), the course (either Woburn oir Wentworth?). But the facts
thereafter are clear, Faldo hits his drive to a par 3, overcooks it,
bounces once on the green then bounces high into the gallery behind the
green (in big trouble). Four or five second gap, then the ball
re-appears from the gallery, into the centre of the green. Faldo wins
the hole and despite hunting for the culprit he/she wasn't found. This
was a British crowd at a European event , so I don't think we can blame
the Americans this time...8-)
By the way I'm English, so I hope this entry can't be construed as too
Partisan.

| I must admit a bit of trepidation concerning adding anything to this
note, however...
I think it was Tom Watson who put it best by saying that 'Golf' was the
real winner at the Ryder Cup.

| Never heard the one about the Indian. I always thought...
It's not magic wand...it's the magician.
Anyway, really enjoyed the play last weekend. Did not enjoy some of
the replies in this notesfight...I mean notesfile.

Finally managed to gain access to this conference!!
Last weekend I watched the best golf tournament ever. The golf
over the 3 days was brilliant, with players from both sides playing
some great stuff. Faldo's hole in 1, Pavin holing an 8-iron "on the
fly", Olazabal holing from sand etc etc.
At one point on the final day, I thought Europe were really going to
win the match. Then, Barry Lane collapsed against Chip Beck and lost
his game when 3 up with 5 to play. Had Lane won, Europe would have
taken 4.5 points from the first 5 games and with a half point from
Torrance would have been very hard to beat. In my mind, that was the
turning point in the match, the Americans went from strength to
strength and won quite convincingly in the end.
Best players - Faldo, Monty, Woosnam and Baker from Europe.
Pavin, Stewart, Floyd from the States.
From a European point of view, maybe Torrance and Langer should have
been replaced before the tourney started as neither were 100% fit and
a fit Sandy Lyle and Ronan Rafferty would surely have won more points.
A big surprise for me was the lack of form by Azinger and Couples who
between them only managed 2 points from the games played. Not what
you would expect from 2 of the worlds top players.
Anyway, well done to the Americans, they played the better golf as a
team over the 3 days and deserved to win the trophy. Hope the next
match is as exciting for the fans as this one was.

| Chip Beck deserves a hand for the pressure golf he played over two
days. Maybe he will finally live down the layup shot at Augusta!
