| Its possible to buy a special re-groving tool, then you can hack
away at the groves till your hearts content.
A friend off mine has one,he would be more than willing to loan it
to you....
If you have copper headed clubs its extremely easy to cut very deep
grooves....( more backspin )

| Dave,
It is possible to have clubs re-grroved but I would suggest using a
reputable pro. Royal DUblin used to have the "Fred Smyth" brand
manufactured beside the club house but I believe this is shut down.
Mick Murphy, a local pro used also do this type of work. (not sure
what club he is at now.). One thing I would say is to be careful not
to run the clubs and stay within the specs laid down by the R&A.
When I played pitch and putt competitively, filing down the grooves
with a file/nail/any other hard instrunment was commonplace to improve
potential backspin. I seem to remember players being forced to change
clubs at major championships because this. I would swear that the guy
who held Our local course record (an amazing 15 under or 39 shots) had
filed his clubs so much that he almost came out the other side.
Naturally as kids we all furiously filed our clubs in chase of the
elusive 38. (One of my mates actually made it to 39, 42 being my
best.)
ANother craze was to punch holes similar to what was on the
old Mashie Niblicks on the face of grooved clubs. Apparently this also
improved backspin _:)
The moral is if you intend to play golf don't file down to far is you
want the ball to move in a forward direction.
