1577.0. "Exotic golf" by LARVAE::MOSSMAN_M (Never let the kettle boil dry) Fri Aug 21 1992 08:16

Last year my wife and I decided to try a different sort of holiday. We
both play golf but Spain and Portugal was getting boring and Florida is
    just too passe.

So we went off to Kenya for 2 weeks and had a combination holiday of
golf, safari and lazing on the beach. It was wonderful.

Next year, we want to try something even more exotic and are busily
scouring the brochures for hotels in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia,
    Indonesia and Thailand.

The problem is, we can probably make quite a decent choice for
ourselves regarding hotels, beaches and other tourist bits but what
    about the golf ?

Does anybody know any courses in this part of the world ?

Are there any we just MUST play (or avoid!) ?

    Looking for suggestions, Michael.

From Hong Kong (Use AMEX) you can take a jet boat to Macau then you will be met
by a limousine and one hour latter be settled in a nice resort called "Hot
Springs". You can play a well maintained Arnold Palmer golf course with caddy
for about $50. The garden type rooms are $30.

The arrangements are best made by AMEX in Hong Kong. Because you are going to
Red China AMEX needs to arrange a visa with China for you. It takes a couple of
days to arrange. Hong Kong itself does not have any public courses.

Absolutely a great experience. The hot springs are great and the food is super.

A few yrs ago my wife and i went to Thailand we played a superb course
called the Royal Siam country club the prices were very cheap and tha
course in super condition the caddies were good with yardage and lines
    on greens.
There were a few drawbacks if/when you hit it in jungle snakes are rife
also some caddies try to give you more than the lines(Female caddies)
having the wife there you would think you would be off limits
some of the caddies know no limits!

The courses we plyed were empty and a warm welcome was given every
where we went , sometimes too warm

    Try it Good golf

When I was working in GIA, I participated in a sales training symposium in
Hong Kong and the local office organized a tournament at the Royal Hong
Kong Country Club. This was a while back so I don't remember much of the
course only it was very formal.

Unfortunately the people who organized it are no longer there so I don't
have any name to give you.

Mike,

I suppose its all depends on what you mean by exotic; different
country; different language; different food; friendly people and
atmosphere.

Based on that, I suggest you try Panmure Golf Club. Your node
name suggests you come from London, England, so let's look at the
criteria:-

Panmure Golf Club, Dundee.

Different Country:- Dundee, Scotland YES
Different Language:- Dundonian YES, very difficult to understand
Different Food:- cuppa tay an a pay YES, Forfar bridies extra
Friendly people:- buy them a drink
                     and you're a
                     friend for life YES
Atmosphere: sunset of Tay
                     Bridge YES

This would also save an awful lot of money, although I do believe the
shuttle from London to Edinburgh, approx 300 miles, is almost as expensive
as a first class return to Singapore on Cathay Pacific, 7,500 miles.

Randall ( I once went abroad and it was shut on half day holiday)
1577.5Scotland is that bit TOO exotic !LARVAE::MOSSMAN_MNever let the kettle boil drySun Aug 23 1992 10:519
    Thanks for the thought, Randall.

I quite agree, Dundee is far more exotic than any of these Far Eastern
places but Zella kind of wants to go there so I guess I'm stuck with
    it.

So, back to the original question .... ??

The big island off Thailand called Phuket (1988 Sports Illustrated
Swimsuit Issue) is a very nice place. Phuket Country Club is a nice
track. In Bangkok, Navatanee Country Club (1975 World Cup/Johnny
Miller winner), is an excellent golf course. Palm Springs Country
Club near Patong Beach (2 Hours Southeast of Bangkok) is a brand new
course (December 1991) and is also an excellent course. There are
any number of courses in and around Bangkok (Royal Thai Army,Air
Force,Navy and Railroad courses) that are average courses.

If you do go to Phuket, take a boat trip through the Phi Phi Islands.
Clear water and white sand beaches with the most colorful array of
    fish I've ever seen.

They do have some odd customs. 6-somes are not uncommon. Caddies are
pretty cheap so you might see people with more than one (one to carry
bag and another to carry umbrella and get drinks)

The best time of year to go is December. February-June is very hot and
July-August is the rainy season. December will be 80-90 and sunny
every day. Bring your sunblock if your even slightly sensitive and
don't bother with the weak insect repellants of the West, buy the stuff
over there, it is has about 10 times the concentration of the chemical
    that wards off the bugs.

    						Have fun!

It's quite easy to find repellants that are almost 100% deet most
anywhere in N.H. (Forget looking at spray cans as the concentration is
always quite diluted.) If you know of anything stronger than that,
I would advise keeping it away from living tissue.
