1575.0. "commentary about recent events" by OAXCEL::SOMERS () Tue Aug 18 1992 10:51

Up to last week, my usual morning routine would be to get into work early,
access NOTES, and enjoy the discussions, observations, humor, and opinions
of this notesfile. Most of the notesfiles I access support my role here at
DEC, and this is the only "personal" one I keep up with. Communicating
with people all over the world about a sport I truly love is very
satisfying.

Therefore it has been disturbing to see what has occurred within this
notesfile recently. As most of you know, last week certain notes were
written to "provoke responses" and "liven things up". The effects these
notes had were just the opposite. The activity here dwindled to a mere
trickle- new notes/topics went from 15 to 30 a day down to just a few.
No one should be surprised this happened. I mean, why would someone take
the time to give their comments on something when the possibility exists
those comments will be rudely ignored, the person will be sworn at, and
name calling will result? As for me, I do what a lot of others probably
have done- go into READ/ONLY mode for a while until things quiet down.
Unfortunately, if most of the readers are doing this here, then all of us
end up losing.

Nobody benefits from a notesfile where opinions are discouraged and are
handled with disrespect. Those of you who feel you need to invite lively
discussions need to think about doing it in such a way that you actually
accomplish your goal, instead of driving people away and keeping them
quiet.

Respectfully,
Gary

1575.1BLAME IT ON THE WEATHERMR4DEC::VENEZI::DIAZSME EUROPEAN LIAISONTue Aug 18 1992 13:058
I sense that entries have cooled down and we are
back to the normal mood.

Maybe is this *&^%$#@ weather what is keeping us away from
talking more golf. :-)

Now, it just so happened that a noter came in to visit last week
oblivious to normal notes protocol with the intent to stir things up.
There were attempts to subtlely and not-so-subtlely let him know that
that the attempts and insults were not appreciated. The best method is
to ignore and once they see that the effort to stir things up is failing,
our little notes world settles back to normal and we all golf and talk
golf happily ever after or until the next bull comes charging into the
    china shop.

We are getting paranoid about everything and losing our sense of humor!
Also, we tend to attack the messenger too much and not debate the message.
Folks then start to take things personally and the naturally try to strike
back. Electronic communication is such a strange animal. It never
    ceases to amaze.

Then again, the reduction in notes participation might have something
to do with the current corporate climate.

Ok, I'll go back to pondering my navel.

Opinions are like noses...everyone has one, we each usually pick our
    own,

This notes file should foster an expression of opinion, a diversity of
thought and allow even the uncoordinated to share their thoughts about
the game. There is even room for some spirited discussion. I see no
problem with what has transpired and believe the situations are usually
self-moderating. Of course if you don't agree then you can go use your
two iron as a lightening rod.
