Again, this is only an opinion. But, the equipment is usually
sold through discount stores, golf stores etc... This implies a
stack'em high, sell'em cheap product mentality. You very rarely
see a golf professional sell this kit.
That must say something.

| I had a Northwestern driver with a power kick shaft in the early 80s
it was a great club the same as the taylor made tour set currntly very
popular.
Metal Head sounds like a taylor got stolen.
Best club i ever had, some people think unless the tour guys use them
they are rubbish.
How many guys have got swings like tour guys i bet the guy that said
they are now good cant break 90

| In typical fashion, I might have been a little abrupt with
Northwestern. No offense. I have a pal who's a 2 or 3 that had an old
Northwestern driver that he loved. It finally shattered, and he's never
found one he likes as well.
As far as the "Power Kick" shaft goes, I always thought it looked like
it oughtta be stickin' out of some junkie's arm...
Like a lot of the guys in this file, I used to work on clubs (both in
the golf business, and later at home). The quality I saw in
Northwestern was, I thought, lousy. Plus, they had virtually no trade
in value - nobody wanted 'em. As far as what the tour guys use - you're
right - a lot of the configurations they use wouldn't suit us - BUT,
the quality of their equipment would. Ping, Armour, Taylor, Hogan,
Wilson, etc. are all fine clubs. Another thought - take a look at the
clubs of a tour guy using Northwestern. They won't remotely resemble an
off-the-shelf set that is commercially available. Then, take a look at,
say, a guy playing Wilson stuff. Other than perhaps slightly shaved
toes, they're pretty conventional. The Northwestern tour stuff I've
seen all looked like old MacGregor 985's...

1566.7 | Its the swing not the Clubs FACT! | PEKING::ANTELLJ | | Wed Aug 12 1992 12:04 | 15 |
| I wont tell you i play of cos you will be pissed, but that old
Northwestern Metal Driver was one of the best clubs i have ever had
its not the club its the guy using it if you get it square at impact
and power thru the ball it goes,
does a ball know its been hit with a ping or a hogan does it know
that when you hood the face on a ping its not meant to hook but it
does,
or when you hit it square with a northwestern its a crap club and it
should not go anywhere.
Wise up its the swing not the club i bet you are a club salesmans dream
'Yes sir goes dead straight yes sir cant miss a putt'
Tell me about it!!!!

| Perhaps the Northwestern equipment sold on the other side of the pond
is far better than that sold in the States....in quality golf stores
such as Rich's Department Store, Mars Bargainland, etc.
I don't know why you seem to take everyone else's opinions so
personally, Joe!!?
Also, what is wrong with not being able to break 90?

| Nelly, i am only trying to inject a bit of fire into the proceedings,
as you say there is nothing wrong with not breaking 150 as long as you
enjoy it .
I just thought it might provoke a few responses.
Swing loose take it easy

1566.12 | The Northwestern Experience | FERITE::GARRITY | | Thu Oct 08 1992 11:23 | 20 |
| I started playing golf about 5 years ago, my first full set of clubs
were Northwesterns purchased at Caldors for about $125.00 and they
served the purpose at the time. I broke 100 for the 1st time using
these clubs.
I eventually upgraded because they started to fall apart, the head of
the 5 wood split while I was playing a hole in Disney World. Fortunately
there was a trash can at the tee and I just threw it away. The 3 wood
head came off the shaft on the 5th hole on Stowe South course. The head
flew about 50 yards after I hit the ball. Could have been a dangerous
if I was playing with a foursome with Stowe's "ready play rule". My
playing partner laughed so hard he couldn't hit the ball for the next
three holes.
I guess my point is that you get what you pay for. For a beginner who
plays once every couple of weeks the are acceptable. But if you pratice
at the range allot and play a couple of times a week they will not hold
up very long. I do feel like I got my moneys worth. But thats about it.
