| Stratton Mountain is better, and Equinox (Manchester, VT.) may be
better still. Guiness Brewery bought the Equinox complex a year ago and
put a ton of money into the whole operation. I'd call to make certain
the course is all set. Beautiful place.

| In addition to the places mentioned in .0 and .1, Vermont also has
Mt. Snow, Haystack, and Sugarbush. I haven't played any of those
yet, so I can't comment...
In NH, there's the White Mt. Hotel/Hale's Location Golf Club, on
West Side Road in North Conway. My wife and I played there early
last summer. Real nice course (9 holes) with wooded fairways,
lots o' bunkers, and some pretty steep hills. The hotel offers
golf packages. ((If you stand on the 1st tee at the N. Conway CC -
the course in the village - and look across the valley you can see
the White Mtn Hotel...))
Also in NH, the Mt. Washington Hotel. Stopped there once to look at
the golf course -- it looked like the people playing/staying there
were the same ones that were there when the place opened in the
1800's...
In Jackson, NH, is the Wentworth Hotel / golf course. Also in Jackson
is the Eagle Mtn House. The course is pretty short...
In New York, there are a few courses in Lake Placid. There's also
The Sagamore, in Bolton Landing (on Lake George). I think the
resort/golf course date back to the early 1900's.

1530.3 | Magazine With N.E. Resorts | OAXCEL::CALLERY | | Thu Jun 04 1992 13:49 | 12 |
| Hi
I just received in the mail a magazine listing Golf Resorts in the
US. It has a listing of Northeast area resorts some of which have
been mentioned.
I will remind myself to bring this magazine in and list resorts.
If you need this information quickly then send me mail and let
me know.

1530.4 | Sugarbush & Stowe | RANGER::GORCZYCA | | Thu Jun 04 1992 13:50 | 14 |
| I've played both Sugarbush and Stowe ... both about 3 hours from Nashua and
both are interesting.
Sugarbush is more of a mountain course: lots of hiking up & down, many
side-hill lies, lots of dog-legs, and lots of beautiful vistas.
Stowe is more of a valley course...still plenty of mountain vistas, but most
fairways are flat and are probably in a bit better "golfing condition" than
those at Sugarbush.
We tried to play at the course listed in a previous note in Mansfield (Stratton)
but it was closed for repairs most of last year.

| Hi,
You might also want to try Quechee, Vt. It's only an hour or so from Nashua
and has two real good courses - Lake and Highland. I believe the New England
PGA tournament is held there and Highland has some of the best looking
par 3s around.

| I can vouch for The Sagamore. It's one of the BEST Donald Ross courses
I've ever seen. The resort is on an island in Lake George, and is World
Class.

1530.7 | Maine has em too! | DNEAST::FREEMAN_KEVI | The Squeeky Wheel = Neglect | Mon Jun 08 1992 09:18 | 8 |
| Pam,
Check out notes 904.6 and 121.25. Also the Samoset in Rockland Me. it's
next to Camden... it's "Where the Mountains meet the Sea." (about
1250' though) very picturesque and the shopping/dining is great.
Do a DIR/ALL/TITLE=SAMOS for some info on the Samoset resort.

My wife and I played Samoset last August on our aniversary - nice
layout, but the fairways were pretty burned out. (what isn't in
August...)
There's also Sugarloaf...

1530.9 | | BAGELS::MATSIS | Let it SNOW!!! | Tue Jun 09 1992 15:08 | 13 |
| Thanks for all of the ideas. We ended up booking a weekend at the Balsams
again. A golf package at Stratton was $504 per couple, no meals included
and a package at the Balsams is $548 per couple, 6 meals included. The food
is incredible. It's a MUCH better deal. According to the Balsams brochure,
the golf course was rated as one of the best in America by Golf Magazine.
I believe it too.
Joe, I would still be interested in seeing the list of Golf Resorts in the
Northeast posted here.
Thanks.

1530.11 | White Mtn cc | AKOCOA::BREEN | Bill Breen Ako2-3 244-7984 | Wed Jul 08 1992 18:30 | 15 |
| There is a course in Bethlehem and as your proceed east on 302 at least
one other (white mountain).
North Conway has a course in town.
going north on 3 then to 116 north takes you past some kind of (sic)
spalding cc and then up to rt 2 a pasture called Waumbek which I am
trying to get out on as I am partial to pasture golf (although Apple in
chelmsford is a bit much).
Stright Straight up 3 to Colebrook then east on 126 90 minute drive
takes you to Balsams - perhaps going north on 16 then west will shorten
that don't knw.
There really are a lot and btb there used to be a lung assoc card with
2 for 1s of which many were in that area.
I am sure someone with perhaps more infor will help.

1530.12 | Maplewood | PCAE::FITTERMAN | | Thu Jul 09 1992 12:43 | 5 |
| I used to play at Maplewood. I believe it is a public golf course and
is a Donald Ross course. It has a hole (#16) par 6 625 yards.

1530.13 | Balsams in late September? | RANGER::GORCZYCA | So, what's ya point? | Tue Sep 06 1994 11:07 | 17 |
| Hi,
I'm thinking about going up to the Balsams around the 18th of this month. The
questions I have are:
a) Has anyone been up there recently? If so, can you provide a report
on the conditions of the resort and the course?
b) Has anyone been up there late in September other years? If so, were
weather conditions acceptable?
I'm assuming positive responses to both questions, but, never hurts to ask
before driving a few hours and investing a few bucks...
Thanks,
John
