1505.0. "Jumiper Hill-Lakeside report" by FLYSQD::MONTVILLE () Tue Apr 14 1992 14:49

Juniper Hill- Lakeside Course. Northboro MA.

Played there last week Friday afternoon. I should state that I
played there last year before all 18 holes were complete.

I am an average golfer around 16 - 18 hcp. And I found this course
to be in excellent shape. It is a pretty difficult course as the
holes (especially backside) are long and narrow (in most cases).
There are several challenging holes that require good drives or
your in trouble. To me, this course really make me think of the
shot and correct club selection. As we entered the clubhouse
(4 some) we asked what course was quicker to get out on...the
desk person responded the Lakeside, at that point someone in the
line stated "better bring alot of balls, the average golfer looses
about 6 to 8 on and maybe even 12 on that course"...Well I guess
I faired better than average as I only lost 3, the score was terrible
(108)..but it was the first time out since major shoulder surgery
last year, and pulled back muscles this year.

The course is in great shape, dry, clean, and well marked. The
greens fee with cart was $30.00 apiece.

I would like to play their original course and compare the difficulty.

    Regards,
    Bob

    Bob,

Did you not find it odd that there were four (COUNT 'EM...FOUR!!) par
3's on the front nine? Further, did you not get the feeling that the
course layout suggested that the front nine didn't have the required
acreage on which to put nine quality holes?

My peeves regarding the front nine (I haven't played the back nine):

Starting out on a par 3......I hate that!!!

Being able to drive the trap in front of the green on #2!! (Let's see,
a mid to low iron on #1....then you need to hit a 5-wood or iron on the
    first par 4!!)

    The third par 3 (I think)...about 190-200yards over wetlands....all
    carry to a shallow green!! I'm a mid-teens handicap...and thus do not
have the shot-making ability to 'spin' a long iron to hold the green!!
After two shots (I think that's the course rule) find the wetlands, you
must proceed to the drop area to the right of the green....picture a
beat up driving range 15 feet long by 5 feet deep...mostly dirt.....you
now have a 10-15 yard pitch to the green!!! There is no room to put
the drop area anywhere else!!! The hole is a joke!!

    Then there is the 4th par three...the 8th hole I think...it is
reminiscent (sp?) of the 9th hole at the Berlin Country Club...for
those of you who have allowed yourself the 'honor' of playing Berlin.
If you haven't played Berlin, rest assured my comparison is not
flattering!!! It's a short hole (8 iron to wedge) over a mini ravine.

On the plus side, I did like the 9th hole!!!

    I shot a 43 when I played there....which is good for me....but it was a
    very un-enjoyable round!!!

I'd love to hear more reports regarding this course....to see if it's
    just me!!!

    Regards,

    Bob,

I managed to play the course about 5 or 6 times during the first
few weeks of april.I am from New Jersey but happened to be in the area
    for a training class.
I found the course to be in excellent shape especially so early in
the year.I did not tee of before 17:00 any days but still managed to
get in 9 sometimes 18.I thought the course was tight and was not overly
thrilled with the fact that there were 4 par 3's on the front.I did
however think that the #5 hole was a great hole.
The back nine was alot longer about 3500 yds. and had only 1 par 3.
I tee'ed off on the back nine first whenever I could because I thought
    it was much more challenging.
Overall i thought it was a very nice course and hope to be able to
play it again in the future.
