1498.0. "CC of Billerica, early report" by AKPHAB::ENGELHARDT () Mon Apr 06 1992 17:00

We played yesterday at Billerica and the greens were very rough (ie, not
smooth), so the putts were bouncing all over the place. I assume that greens
are normally rolled to correct this, right? Is it too early for them to do it
now? If so, when will they be able to do it?

BTW - there was construction over the winter (irrigation, I think), so there is
lots of mud on 5 of the 1st 9 holes. AND, they have raised their (9-hole) fees
to $12 weekends, $10 weekdays. All in all, not a bargain.

Some courses roll their greens....but most simply use their
greensmowers which are equipped with rollers in front of each reel.

It's too early for a lot of courses to be taking their mowers out onto
the greens. It would cause more harm than good, what with the tires
leaving grooves in the greens and the potential for scalping the grass
    on a soft green.

Most courses are just opening up, and it will take a few weeks to be in
    quality playing condition.

Has anyone played the new 9 at Billerica? Was at the range on
Saturday and was surprised to see all the changes.

A new 9? Wow, if its anything like the first 9 they've got a real good course.

Put aside the condition of the golf course (sorry) and I think the first 9 is
one of the best layouts in the area! I don't know who designed it or how long
its been there but its something you might see in N.C. Pine tree lined
fareways, fareway bunkers at the corners, big greens, long tees, strategy off
the tee, super finishing hole around a pond, strategy layups. Its too bad its
not better kept, but then the price would be sky high.

(haven't played it in a few years but thats what I remember)

I'm too much of a beginner to make qualitative judgements about it, but here are
few facts:

 - it's much shorter: less that 2000 yards from the white's, par 31 (but I don't
think that it's actually been rated). 4 or 5 par 3's.

 - #11 is a par 3 with a big pond right in front of the green; #13 is a par 3
with a big gully between the tee and green. It's been cleared now, but last
fall was a real jungle and intimidating (for me). 3 or 4 stream crossings.

 - pretty flat greens

 - a couple are staight and long enough to blast off the tee, but most require
some distance accuracy at the tee.

re: .3 You remember right Bob. Billerica's original nine offers a
lot to test your skills. How about #1, long, tree-lined par 4
(they even made it a par 5 for a couple of years). That hole
wakes you up quick. #5 is one of the most difficult par 5's
           you will ever see.

re: .4 Thanks for the info! 2000 yards! It's an executive course
then. They ran out of real estate to make a decent length
course. I'll try it out this spring though.
