Olazabal won his 2nd tournament on the trot when he collected the
Meditteranean Open at the weekend. This win takes him into 2nd place
in the Sony World rankings behind Ian Woosnam. Still in his
mid-twenties, this is Olazabal's 16th professional tournament victory.
Suggestions that his temperament is suspect are, I feel, unfounded.
You only have to look at his record in the last 3 Ryder Cups to see
that he has the nerve and ability to cope with the pressures of nearly
always being one of the favourites to win a major. He is still after
all, a relatively young man. Many majors are won by golfers in their
30's so he still has a lot of time on his side. I think it's only a
matter of time before he picks up a major, this year maybe?
It's good to see Lyle returning to somewhere near his best and
hopefully we'll see him back in the winners circle this year. He is 32
under par for his last 8 rounds of competition golf and has only once
in these 8 rounds failed to break 70. Over the last 3 years his main
problem seemed to be the inability to maintain consistency over a 4
round competition, whereby he would shoot 2 or 3 very good rounds but
ruin it all by shooting 80 or more in 1 round. Hopefully he has now got
over this and a good showing in the Masters in a few weeks time will
prove that he's back.
