1461.0. "Jose' is on his way !!!" by JOCKEY::MCNAMARAL () Tue Feb 25 1992 08:29

    Hi Chaps

    I heard in this mornings news thatr Jose' Maria Olathabal won the
    Tenerife ( a small island off the coast of Africa )Open with a course
    record final round of 63. This is apparently only his third competition
    of the season and seems to indicate he is ready. The have been
    suggestions that he doesn't have the temprement for the big occasion
    but I just wonder if this is his year.

    I also here Sandy Lyle finished well in a recent event in the states
    which I hope is a return to the glory days for one of the gentlemen of
    the proffesional game ( and he's scottish).

    I will attempt to keep you guys on the other side of the pond updated
    as the European Tour gets underway. It would be appreciated of someone
    could do the same over there with special emphasis on the euro players.

    Cheers,

    Laurence

1461.1A major for Ollie this year....MADBAS::DSMITHTue Mar 03 1992 03:4526

     Olazabal won his 2nd tournament on the trot when he collected the
    Meditteranean Open at the weekend. This win takes him into 2nd place
    in the Sony World rankings behind Ian Woosnam. Still in his
    mid-twenties, this is Olazabal's 16th professional tournament victory.

     Suggestions that his temperament is suspect are, I feel, unfounded.
    You only have to look at his record in the last 3 Ryder Cups to see
    that he has the nerve and ability to cope with the pressures of nearly
    always being one of the favourites to win a major. He is still after
    all, a relatively young man. Many majors are won by golfers in their
    30's so he still has a lot of time on his side. I think it's only a
    matter of time before he picks up a major, this year maybe?

     It's good to see Lyle returning to somewhere near his best and
    hopefully we'll see him back in the winners circle this year. He is 32
    under par for his last 8 rounds of competition golf and has only once
    in these 8 rounds failed to break 70. Over the last 3 years his main
    problem seemed to be the inability to maintain consistency over a 4
    round competition, whereby he would shoot 2 or 3 very good rounds but
    ruin it all by shooting 80 or more in 1 round. Hopefully he has now got
    over this and a good showing in the Masters in a few weeks time will
    prove that he's back.
