1452.0. "COURSES NEAR LAX?" by MRKTNG::WHITTEN (David Whitten @TTB) Mon Feb 17 1992 11:57

Can anyone suggest a course/courses near LAX that are accessible to the
general public? I have a conference beginning March 16th in a hotel at
LAX & am considering going out the day (or perhaps weekend) before to
get in a round or two.

    Thanks,

    David,

Sevral courses within a few hours of LAX...which means about five
miles. Sorry, just a little SoCal humor. Depending on time of day
etc., you have many options. Right next to the airport is Westchester,
a short course, less than regular, but not an executive either. Just
north afew miles is Rancho Park, the former home of the LA OPEN. Nice
course, they still host a Seniors tourney. About an hour south is Los
Verdes, beautiful layout on the cliffs of Palos Verdes Peninsula, over
    looking the ocean.

Give me a call at DTN 535-4021 and we can talk more.

So Cal Dandy gave some good advice, but Los Verdes is only 30 minutes
away, unless there is a big jam. Also, you could consider
trying to play Palos Verdes Peninsula, which is a semi-private club,
available to the public during the week (not certain about week-ends
anymore - bring lots of balls). Not of the same caliber, but I believe
better than Westchester is Alondra Park in Lawndale (Prarie and Redondo
Beach Blvds, which has a championship course and also an 18 hole three
par that is supposed to be one of the best. It is about 20 minutes
from the Airport area. About an hour away is Los Amigos, in Downey,
which is an interesting course with a lot of contrasts, and at about
the same distant is Recreation Park in Long Beach, which is an
excellent course. There are several in the Long Beach area, Lakewood
CC (which was private and is now public), Skylinks, and El Dorado all
of which should be less than an hour. Give me a call if you want more,
    dtn 531.3767 or 310.417.3767.

Which course is PV Peninsula. Sounds interesting. I was at Los Verdes
the other day, but it was too crowded to get on. I will also look into
Lakewood my next time up in the area, but you are right about
Recreation Park, at very beautiful public layout. Never thought much
of Skylinks or El Dorado. Never played Alondra, is it pretty nice?

1452.4Alondra isn't "great"SIERAS::MCCLUSKYThu Mar 19 1992 14:5114
    Dandy,

Alondra is getting better. American Golf has taken over and is doing a
good job. It is an open course, with little trouble, fairly long. All
the water was removed to speed play. Some might refer to it as a cow
pasture, it is not scenic and its in the middle of the city
(Lawndale?), but it is of championship length and reasonable $14.00. I
am told that the 3-par is one of the best in the U.S., but I've never
    played it.

PV Peninsula is a favorite of several I know and I haven't been up
there in 20 years. I'll get some more info for you.
