1408.1 | cast irons tough to bend | WALTA::LENEHAN | | Tue Dec 24 1991 10:57 | 11 |

Hi,
I'm pretty sure "cast" clubs cannot easily, (if at all) be bent.
Forged clubs are a softer metal and can be bent. You may have to
exchange the orange pings for red?
good luck,
Walta

I had my Pings flattened by 3 degrees - the local pro sent
them back to the factory to do it. (They said that 3 degrees
was the maximum that the clubs could be bent).

re:.3
Sound like Ping has service to do this.. Do you know if the local pro
(any pro shop??) will give me the service if I didn't buy the irons
from him/her?? What's the service charge??
Thanks,
T.

There's no reason why not (I hadn't bought mine there) -
it's just a matter of shipping them out. Each pro should
have a list for various services related to club-making -
just ask! They may have to consult with their Ping sales
rep first, though.

With regard to the base note I too have a similar problem and was
wondering how you fared out with having the lie changed.
Also could someone answer the following:
1. Is it better for a smaller person to have the shaft shortened or
to have the lie flattened ? or should both be done at the same
time.?
2. If the shaft is cut say by 1 inch apart from altering the swing
weight does it change any of the clubs other characistics. ?
3. Is bending the shaft to flatten the lie a relatively easy job
as I must confess I have not been overly impressed by the person
to whom I spoke to in the shop about this. (The clubs are Mc Gregor
Tourneys and I live in GENEVA so I'm not exactly spoilt for choice
as to who I can get to carry out the work.)
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Donal.

1. Is it better for a smaller person to have the shaft shortened or

The length of the club is more a function of the length of your arms
relative to your height. The fact that someone is shorter than average doesn't
indicate that the clubs should be longer.
2. If the shaft is cut say by 1 inch apart from altering the swing
weight does it change any of the clubs other characistics.
You can expect that you'll hit the ball a shorter distance than before
the shaft was cut.
3. Is bending the shaft to flatten the lie a relatively easy job
as I must confess I have not been overly impressed by the person
to whom I spoke to in the shop about this. (The clubs are Mc Gregor

To adjust the lie of the club you don't bend the shaft, you bend the
hosel of the club. It is indeed not a simple job to adjust the lie of the
club. You must also adjust the loft of the club so that it will be the same
after the bending as before. This requires special equipment nad lots of
practice. Also if the club is cast, there is a good chance that the hosel will
break while trying to bend it. A forged blade can be bent and some cast blades
can be bent although I wouldn't take a chance myself. The real question is do
you need to have your clubs adjusted. To figure this out look at the wear
pattern on the sole of the club. If it is near the toe, yes you need a more
upright lie. (this will also cause a push slice). If it is near the heel, thee
a flater lie is in order. (this causes a pull hook) If you can't tell by
looking at the clubs, put a piece of tape on the sole of the club and hit a few
shots off a piece of plywood. The waer pattern on the tape will show up very
quickly.
