1401.2 | Do they require carts? | SONATA::FEENEY | non golfers live half a life | Thu Dec 12 1991 08:54 | 1 |
| Thanks for the list of courses. To your knowledge, do any of them allow walking?
|
1401.3 | Most will allow walking. | ELWOOD::TRAN | Not So Straight Hitter. | Fri Dec 13 1991 13:03 | 11 |
|
I could not remember which one needs cart - I took cart at all of them,
but most allow walking. Call them when you get in town, also before you
make tee time ask if the greens are cut (in winter they usually seed
the greens during weekdays).
Enjoy,

1401.4 | Point me to Poinciana? | VERGA::F_MCGOWAN | | Fri Dec 27 1991 11:14 | 10 |
| Good info...I'm heading for Orlando week after next, and plan to bring
the sticks (hey, I have to try out my new swing, eh?)...but don't want
to spend ALL my spare change on greens fees (the Disney courses go for
$70 - $85 per 18, including mandatory cart); so I'd appreciate a
pointer to something a bit more reasonable! For instance, one of the
travel guides mentioned Poinciana Golf and Tennis Resort: but I think
it must have been a misprint - $10, including the cart, for a
legitimate par 72 course??

1401.5 | I knew it was too good to be true! | VERGA::F_MCGOWAN | | Sat Dec 28 1991 11:54 | 5 |
| Made a quick phone call to Poinciana today...greens fees are $27,
including mandatory cart; and club rental is $13 (all plus 7% state
tax). Still a bargain compared with what the Disney courses get, but
I imagine the quality of the course mightn't be as good.

1401.6 | Life in Orlando | ODIXIE::SIVRET | | Thu Jan 09 1992 12:59 | 41 |
| Frank, the price you had listed was for summer play, $27 sounds right
for this time of year. I've never played Poinciana and to tell you the
truth have never talked to anyone who has played it. There are just so
many good courses available in the $30 price range and even less if
you have a FL drivers licence. Right now is the high season where
every course triples the prices to accomadate all the "snowbirds" who
are willing to pay the price to play. But if your willing to drive
30min from Orlando there is some great tracks.
DeBery Plantation held both the Q-School and US Open Qualification over
the last 2 years.
Palasades CC Very old course that was redsigned, just opened this
summer.
CC of Mt Dora just opened same course designer as the privious two.
All for under $30
For those who are not willing to drive and have a little more money to
spend
MetroWest a Robert Trent Jones designed $39 for Fl residents.
Hunters Creek Longest in Fl 7500yds from the tips.
Timacuan G&CC a great track with a killer 2nd hole that could ruin your
day.
All of the above are Semi-Private that accepts outside play. The
Public courses @$20 are very slow 5-6 hrs and the conditions are poor.
And that leaves the Private clubs, most are excellant, but can be
very expensive even as a guest. Bay Hill $65 in summer @$100 in winter
leads the bunch. Most are around $30-50.
So it pays to know a local. Frank its too bad I did'nt note until it
was too late, I have a tee time at Grand Cypress for Sat. Morning.
Next time Maybe.

| Mike,
Do you have telephone numbers for the public or muncipal courses. We may want
to play them after playing a semi. By the way what is the policy in general for
playing more than 18. Thanks for all your tips to date.

1401.8 | more on Orlando | ODIXIE::SIVRET | | Fri Jan 10 1992 16:46 | 25 |
| Phil, see the problem with the muncipal courses if you're a resident
they are cheap, but as a visitor you end up paying as much as some
semi-private clubs. I'll try to list some here.
$ @$20
Dubsdread GC 246-2551 Short old course 6300yds par 71
Winter Springs GC 699-1833 nice track 6800yds par 72
Cypress Creek CC 351-2187 interesting but slow
All three are true municipals and the conditions are less than Ideal.
$$ @$30 but well worth it
Debary Plantation 668-2061 6800yds must play great conditions
Ekana G&CC 366-1211 6800Yds good condition (I don't care for the
layout, but its nothing that a bulldozer can't fix.)
Wedgefield G&CC 568-2116 Fun track
$$$
Metrowest 299-1099
Hunters creek 240-4653
Windermere 878-4410
Timacuan 645-4653
Resort type conditions great layouts can't go wrong with any.
Give a call maybe we can get a round in DTN 353-6291

>> Hey Phil,
If you don't mind another DECCIE to team up with, I'm heading down there for
the 19th. I'm visiting a friend but need to find something to do for the
afternoon during the week. Figured I'd take my clubs down with me. If
you think about it and we can hook up and you don't mind...let me know
if I can maybe catch up to you guys. (BTW, with my game, if you guys
take it seriously....you better count me out. ;^)

1401.11 | Gee, did I do that?? | VERGA::F_MCGOWAN | | Fri Jan 17 1992 16:34 | 16 |
| .6 - Well, I managed to get in two (2) rounds: one at Cypress Creek,
which I enjoyed. Got in 18 in a little over 4 hours (compared with
5 to 5.5 during the summer season up here in the Boston area, that's
pretty quick). Never did get to Poinciana (Cypress Creek was about a
long par 5 from my hotel, the Delta Orlando, so it seemed silly to get
in a car and fight the loonies out there on I4). Pricey, 35 + 15 for
the clubs. Nice course, though. Second 18 was at the Magnolia, one of
the Disney courses. Beautiful course, but, as expected, pricey: 70 +
20 for the clubs; and another 11 so my wife could drive the cart and
take photos. It was worth it, just to have her photograph a shot from
130 yards that stopped 3' from the pin! Definitely the high point of my
golfing endeavors for the week. It was something of a novelty to find
myself repairing one of my own ball marks...now I've got some nice
memories to hold me until Spring.

| I will be renting a home situated In the Meadow Woods Golf Club in

has played at the Meadow Woods Golf Club. Also we have no green fees

1401.14 | Orange Lakes CC | TPSYS::CARBONE | | Wed Mar 11 1992 11:11 | 10 |
| Was wondering if any of you Florida golfers have ever heard of or
played at Orange lakes CC in Kissimmee. Its located about 4 miles from
Disney. I was given a week in a timeshare for a gift and was wondering
how the course was. Also any other courses in the area that are must
play courses. I don't mind if there a little expensive as long as they
are worth it. I don't get down south too often so I want to make sure
I play a couple premier courses for the area while I have the chance.
Any help or info will be appreciated.
Thanks...Mike

but be sure you line up some other courses. See previous notes.

| Mike,
I took a golf vacation last February in the area. Played the following
courses:
Orange Lake
Of the four courses I played, this was the most dissapointing. Not as
well maintained as the others, not as scenic or interesting, and most
expensive by far. They have three nine hole courses, one featuring an
island green.
Hunter's Creek
A long, interesting layout set in a planned community. The layout
separates each hole from the others, making you feel like you have the
course to yourself. Very well maintained.
Kissimmee Bay Country Club
My favorite of the bunch. A reletavily new semi-private course with a
beautiful layout (typical of Florida golf, lots of water comes into
play). This course was in great shape, and worth the half-hour drive.
Cypress Creek
A "local" course. Not as nice as Hunter's or Kissimmee, but more
enjoyable than Orange Lake. Lots of cypress trees/swamp to contend
with off the fairway.
I've got scorecards with layouts for these courses if your interested.
Have a great time.

I'll be in the Orlando area in the March timeframe. I'm interested
in playing atleast four time while I'm there. I won't be able to play
the 50-60 courses everyday so, I was interested in the decent courses
priced around 30 bucks..with carts optional. Any info would be
helpful. I tried the hotel and they have no packages.
send email please...
