1394.0. "Grand Slam of Golf" by USPMLO::DESROCHERS () Mon Nov 11 1991 08:49

Looks like winter has set in... no one mentioning this week's
    	Grand Slam of Golf !!

Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:00 - 10:00, the winners of the
four Majors tee it up against each other!! Not only is it
intriguing as a match up but it's great to get such a big
event on prime time TV. Btw, TBS is carrying it.

    	The participants are...

    		Ian Woosnam Masters
    		Payne Stewart US Open
    		Ian Baker-Finch British Open
    		John Daley PGA

Looks like an interesting matchup, yes?

1394.1Finch is ailing...CSLALL::STANZMon Nov 11 1991 12:048
Was watching the mumblemumble somethingorother matches from Australia
that were broadcast on ESPN yesterday, and the announcers made mention
of the fact that Finchs' back was giving him big problems, and that he
was playing very poorly because of it. He lost his match by four
    strokes.

BTW, the teams were Europe, "Australasia" (?), Japan and U.S.- they
finished in just that order. The U.S. was defeated by Japan......

I guess is 6-10 in the evening since you mentioned prime time. Where are
they playing?

I believe they'll tee it up in Hawaii. I don't recall the actual course.
Courses there can vary widely, like most, depending on the amount of wind. My
guess is that they'll have a late-morning to early afternoon (Hawaiian time) tee
off. I'll also guess that the fron 9 will be passive and the back nine will be
a bit hairy.

Thanks for the times!

Seeing just how far Daley hits it beyond the others, especially
Woosie, will be really interesting. I too believe it's in
Hawaii and most of those courses seem to be wide open from the
tee with few trees. Hopefully it's a let-er-rip kind of
    	course.

They are playing the Kiele Course at Kauai Lagoons on the island of
Kauai. I stayed/played there April of '90 on my honeymoon. One of the
nicest courses I've ever played. A Nicklaus design and a monster from
the back. Each hole is named after an animal and has a cement (?)
statue on each tee. #18 is "The Bear".
Hope they show a little of the resort itself. The Westin Kauai is one
of the most disgustingly beautiful places I've ever stayed. The pool
alone is something you'll never forget.
    Should be a good test.

    Hi Joe,

Eunhwa and I also spent one week there on our honeymoon... good
discription of the Westin Kuaui "disgustingly beautiful" :) .

I have never played a more breathtakingly awesome golf course,
the Kiele Course is truly incredible. I remember one hole
played 470yards par 4... the 18th into the wind is impossible.

My favorite was a par three over a HUGE drop, with waves
crashing on the rocks below... to a green sticking out on a
    	cliff penisula!

The 18th is a long par four, with the second shot a carry over
water to a penisula green BRUTAL 2nd shot. Each hole is well
    	designed. Really a bear.

1394.7Any one taping?PUTTER::WARFIELDGone GolfingTue Nov 12 1991 13:2211
I too have fond memories of the Kiele course. (I drove the green on 16 and
left my eagle putt inches short.) Is anyone out there planning on taping the
round? Could I get a copy? I collect tapes of courses that I've played.
Reviewing them is a great way to spend a snowy weekend.

The Kiele course is a great course. I like how Nicklaus has a few brutal
(read long/tough) holes and then throws in a short hole (not easy, just short)
to let you catch your breath.

    I watched until thru 16.
They were all watching Baker-Finch make his putts.
John D. drove into one trap >300 yards from the tee and was only 82
yards off another par 4. He was still only +3 with B/F leading at -3
    when I stopped watching.
Love to watch Ian W. drive through the ball and still have great style!

Will make for good watching on my Channel #6 in Shrewsbury this
    evening.

IBF is a putting machine and will most likely win, although Woosnan can
get hot, but I got a kick out of watching Daly and Woosnan "thug" the
ball. Plus I like the style Daly uses, just hit it and go putt it. He
may not win this one, but his fan club and his experience is growing
rapidly. He hit a driver and 4 iron on a 562 yd. hole, but missed the
green to the right. He was consistantly passed Woosnan, a reputed long
ball artist. The level of play from the 7th hole on got quite good.
Daly was 4 under for the last 11 holes, but had some problems on the
first 7 with errant approach shots, a couple of bad lies and I am sure,
    a big case of nerves.

If Daly ever learns to use some course management from time to time,
he will be very very good. He needs to know when to leave that
    cannon in the bag!

I loved the comments the on course guy would make everytime Daly
    really got into a drive!!!!!!!!!

Sure would like to see a ball hit that far in real life. The course I
play on he'd have to use a 7 iron off of most of the tees!

1394.13NEWPRT::JOHNSON_DOWed Nov 13 1991 16:4414
Couldn't agree more, but with the course management clones in abundant
supply, I find Daly a refreshing diversion. Can you imagine, last year
at this time he was on the Hogan tour and now he is on world wide TV,
and gauranteed 150K. Then he gets on a plane and heads for Palm
Springs to play in the Skins. Add to that the PGA and his winnings
this year and he has far exceeded his goals for the year and those of
    most rookies.

Thought it was interesting that Woosnan's game improved when he stopped
trying to out gun Daly. I am looking forward to today's conclusion,
regardless of the outcome. And I am trying to get tickets tothe Skins
just to see/hear a ball hit that hard.

I guess besides course management, even in holes that are appropriate
for a driver, trying to hit everytime 330+ yards will cause many
missed shots. But as stated many times, he is fun to watch.

During this weekend's tourney (Centel), Daly was mentioned as a
shoe-in for "rookie of the year"

John Daly and Ian Woosnan are great to watch. Both go for it.
None of the " Let's play it safe tactics. " It's great shots
that make the sport interesting. Shots that press the golfer
to the limit of his/her ability. Great stuff...

Shots like the ones that John Daly played on #17, or was it #16.
The par four, the fairway shrinks to less than ten yards, John
Daly drilling the driver... Great Stuff...

    A comment on the commentary.......

Although I usually find the commentators who worked this event to be
among the very best, I felt the detracted from the program's quality
this time around!!! A few too many (thousand) 'wee' comments in
reference to Woosnam....and the color guy/analyst (along side Scully)
was trying to be way too cute for his own good. His constant comments
in reference to Scully's vocabulary and twisting of phrases wore very
thin, and the continual differences of opinion with the walking
reporter also stood out. Again...these gentlemen normally add to the
quality of the telecasts I've watched....yet this time around they let
    me down!!

    re -1

Agreed on Scully and Clampett (roving reporter), however can't agree
with McCord (sidekick). I think that Gary McCord and Johnny Miller
have done more for the broadcasting of golf than anyone in a while.
It has taken away the almost-revered way announcers used to whisper,
like they were in church, and replaced it with announcing on a more
personal level. McCord and Miller give accurate accounts of what it
is like to be on the tour. They constantly remind us that it is only
a game and it should be fun. When I listen to McCord it makes me feel
like I'm talking with a buddy at the 19th hole.
As far as the event itself, what a show. I can't remeber when I've
enjoyed watching golf so much. Whether it was the format, the course
or the players, it was 8 hours of enjoyment. I hope they keep it at
    Kiele.

The only thing that bugged me was the countless times that either
Clampett or McCord would chime in during the approach shot with:

"Oh this is coming in right on the stick."
Daly ought to be fun to watch on the Skins game on Thanksgiving
weekend. Let the other guys force the tie, while he goes for the win!
1394.19all over the flag!/CSLALL::WEWINGThu Nov 14 1991 12:0611
i agree that there was way too much "that's all over the flag"
talk, especially when the shots weren't even close to the stick.
most times he should have said 'that's all over the green'.

i was amazed how ian w. came on at the end and i.b.f. went
    into cruise control too early.

one of the announcers made a good point about ibf's putts being
much more difficult when he didn't the three stroke cushion.

I wish all pros played the game as fast as John Daly does!
Those people are so used to 5 hour rounds that 5 hour rounds are the norm
on our tour. Watch the majority of the Europeans for how to play fast,
less Scotland's Ken Brown, and the Japanese for slow players.

I like John Daly alot, but just remember, driving is for show, and
putting is for dough! His putting was a little bit off, that's why he
was in last place. I admire agressive golf, ballsy golf, but you gotta
be able to putt. John has got great finesse with his wedges, sand
play, chipping etc. IBF lost because of his PUTTING. John Daly is a
"Gumby". That is for his backswing, taking it ALL the way back.

I love golf, and then there's my wife.

RE: Daly putts. As a matter of fact, it was his putting that kept him
in the hunt at all. His iron play was erratic, since he was breaking in
a new set of irons. You don't see many who line up the putt and charge
like Daly does. The forty footer he made was really tought. As for
his back swing etc. read Golf Digest. They talk about his swing and
the why's and why nots. Bottom line, there are a few others who have
come along with different styles that changed the game for everyone.
MAybe DALy will be another. Nicklaus' flying elbow, Couples three
    knuckles and bent left arm.
